Schiavi cardiaci delle stelle,
abbiamo conquistato il mondo prima di alzarci dal letto,
ma ci siamo svegliati ed esso è opaco,
ci siamo alzati ed esso è estraneo.

Today I finished a cardiac rehab program that began last November. For the past 3 months I have attended up to 3 classes a week as I gradually built back my endurance after having a blockage cleared in a major artery in mid September. As part of the mix of cardio and strength exercises I have begun running again. Something I have struggled with for the past few years that I now know was caused by the blockage.
This all began last Spring when I was having to stop and let my heart settle down if I began walking too fast. I immediately went to get it checked out by a cardiologist and had a nuclear stress test in early June. I passed that test, diagnosed with arrhythmia, and sent on my way. Arrhythmia is fairly common with no real treatment other than managing symptoms with medicine. I elected to try without medicine. But, after struggling for 2 1/2 more months I went back to ask for medicine. That day she came in planning to just write me a prescription and send me on my way. But as we talked and I explained what I was experiencing she sat back and listened and came to a new conclusion. Telling me that a nuclear stress test can return a false negative 5% of the time, she scheduled me for an angiogram with one of her colleagues the following week. Within 30 minutes of starting the angiogram the doctor found a 90% blockage in a major artery. Roughly 60 minutes later it was cleared and I had a stent in place.
Coming out of the procedure I felt great. The arrhythmia was gone, recovery was extremely short , and I was cleared to begin exercising a few weeks later. In addition to the cardiac rehab classes I also was able to rejoin my Saturday running group. In recent years running had been frustrating. I have been a long distance runner steadily since 2002, but over the past few years I struggled and could not figure out why. Now I am excited to run again. In the past 3 months I have steadily built my running back up to 3 miles and will continue to expand. My goal for the upcoming year is to run a local 10 mile race in October.

Doing some smoke photography, it's harder than I'd have imagined at least for the post processing. Titles are really fun to come up with. As I delve a little more into understanding it, I'll share more about methods and rig notes. I'm currently using Fred Soll incense, primarily because I like it but the resin produces more smoke than others I experimented with.

While looking up at the cardiac monitor, I noticed the clear horizontal thirds that were formed by the waves of my husband's heart rate and oxygen saturation monitor. Of course, I was a bit miffed at the fact that I didn't have my camera with me but I got over that rather quickly and just took a quick shot with my iPhone. A few hours in the ER, some IV propofol and a quick shock with the paddles at 150 joules and we walked outta there to have lunch on a street side patio. Thank goodness for modern medicine, and the fact that we are Canadian :)

"Whereas the first time I did the rehab. it was on the ground floor, it had now been moved to the 4th floor and I was determined to always use the stairs everywhere, it might have only been four floors but it took at about 108 steps (I know because I counted them) to get there so by the time you stumbled into the waiting room you could always rely on some-one to greet you with .. "you came up the stairs, didn't you!".
The attendees within the group were all at different stages in their recovery which meant a regular change of who you were with week to week as people left or joined over the 6 week period. Even so, you still get to know each other to a degree and a kind of self-help bond develops within the group. The exercises are designed around you own condition and level of recovery and decided during a brief one-to-one consultation with Fiona, the cardiac nurse, on your weeks progress before the classes begin, when you are given a sticker to wear showing a number of hearts and crosses.
....... Each participant was on a different program as depicted by the hearts & crosses on their sticker so you could be moving around the timed circuit differently from each other, each exercise station carried either a heart (cardiovascular exercise) or a cross (active recovery) and you were supposed to know your next exercise by following the sequence on symbols on your sticker (easy? – yeah!). I for one could never really work out where I should be or when to move to the next station and always be told ‘No, you should be over there!’"

Thank God they've got me plugged in!! .... (hehe)
THIS WAS A PLANNED ANGIOGRAM, NOT AN EMERGENCY
This was an experience I don't want to repeat too often!
Nice seeing some of the staff in the cardiac day unit again who treated like an old friend following my cardiovesion a few weeks ago but the angioplasty itself was probably the worst chest pain I have ever experienced (and this was my 4th angiogram).
The first stent was OK, told to expect some pain while they ballooned the artery and it disappeared once the stent was inserted which is tolerable but the second where I believe they opened up an existing stent the pain didn't go and I had to be given morphine and further painkillers back in the day unit.
The pain must be similar to that of a heart attack as the balloon blocks the artery simulating a heart attack situation but this was far worse than my actual heart attack, the docs thought this was a good sign that they had found the right spot but for me it was a touch worrying - thoughts of being one of the 1/1000 flashed through my mind!!
I've got a whole new cocktail of tablets for the next year.

So much better ON WHITE
Something different again today.
I can't help myself, but to me it looks a little bit like a heart. Bleeded out and lifeless.
Kinda depressing for the start of the weekend, I know. :)

Hearts & Souls closed a busy June for the charity today at the Highfield Surgery PPG ‘Mind & body matters – mind & body health’ event held at the Hazlemere Community Centre, where we have been reaching out into the local community to increase awareness as well as raising a few £’s for the charity, a goal that can be considered a complete success over the past month.
It was also a good to meet up with our patron, Tony McHale, who gave the charity a glowing endorsement during his opening dialogue today.
It has been a pleasure to talk to many people who have shared their own stories or just find out about the charity and the work we do supporting the local cardiac rehab., not just today but over all the events attended this month from the ‘Health on the High Street‘ in High Wycombe library to the Tesco bucket collection at Loudwater Tesco, Downley Day and the Rebellion Quiz Night – it has been a fun experience and there must now be many of our much sought after syringe pens in households around South Bucks!
Our grateful thanks are extended to all the organisations who have supported and hosted us over the past month not forgetting all our volunteers and helpers who made these events possible for us just to be there.
