The Sally Lightfoot Crab is also known as the Nimble Spray, Short, or Urchin Crab. It has a brown body, with orange to yellow rings on the legs. It actually belongs to a family of shore crabs, however, it is less likely than the other genera to go on land. Its carapace is very flat. which allows it to hide in small crevices within rock work
Neoscona oaxacensis is a relatively large spider, females being about 9–18 mm (0.35–0.7 in) long overall, with a carapace of about 4–8 mm (0.15–0.3 in) long by 3–6 mm (0.1–0.25 in) wide. Males are smaller, being about 6–13 mm (0.25–0.5 in) long overall, with a carapace of about 3–6 mm (0.1–0.25 in) long by 3–5 mm (0.1–0.2 in) wide. Specimens from the Galápagos are among the largest found. The black-and-white pattern on the upper (dorsal) surface of the abdomen is considered to be distinctive. South American specimens have a more slender abdomen than North American ones, with a more distinct light central band, which has a wavy border. Females have an epigyne appearing 2.5 times as long as wide when viewed from the rear. Males have a palp with an S-shaped conductor.

Turtles are unable to regulate their body temperatures independently, so they are completely dependent on the temperature of their environment. For this reason, they need to sunbathe frequently to warm themselves and maintain their body temperatures.
The red-eared slider gets its name from the small, red stripe around its ears, or where its ears would be, and from its ability to slide quickly off rocks and logs into the water.
Red-eared sliders are native to the Southern United States and northern Mexico, but have become established in other places because of pet releases, and have become an invasive species in many areas where they outcompete native species.
The carapace of this species can reach more than 40 cm (16 in) in length, but the typical length ranges from 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in). The females of the species are usually larger than the males. They typically live between 20 and 30 years.

Despite their vivid colors, Kingfisher are not easy to see. The metallic colors of its upper faces constitute indeed an excellent camouflage as it skims along the water on its short, vibrant wings. Fortunately they utter distinctive calls, emitted especially in flight, which allows them to be spotted. These metallic, high-pitched whistles are unlike any other. The kingfisher bathes especially during the nesting period, diving several times in a row, after which it smooths its plumage, stretches its wings and yawns. In total, this toilet can last two hours a day. Several times a day, it rejects a ball of greyish rejection containing fish bones and insect shells. At night, it sleeps alone in riparian vegetation, reeds or hollow trees.

The Blue Land Crab is a species of land crab found in tropical and subtopical estuaries and other maritime areas of land along the Atlantic coast of the Americas from Brazil and Colombia, through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, to the Bahamas, and north to Ponce Inlet, Florida Bermuda. The species varies in colour from dark blue to brown or pale grey, and may grow to 15 centimetres in carapace width and weigh over 500 grams. Juveniles are a bright orange. (wikipedia)
Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba. December 2016.
They are common shore crabs in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world, inhabiting deep burrows in the intertidal zone. They are generalist scavengers and predators of small animals. Ocypode brevicornis is a species of ghost crab native to the Indian Ocean, from the Gulf of Oman to the Nicobar Islands. The carapace reaches a length of 41 mm and a width of 50 mm.

Perhaps as close to parity as I have ever seen in a fight between a Yellow-crowned Night Heron and a blue crab but still a one-sided affair. After only a couple of rounds the crab had lost most of the appendages on the right side and those on the left soon followed. Even then it took quite a while for the bird to pulverize the crab's carapace sufficiently to get it down the hatch. On Horsepen Bayou.

My favorite favorite shore crab. the Purple Shore Crab (Hemigrapsus nudus), can be found under rocks in the intertidal zone from Alaska to Mexico. It's carapace can grow to 2 1/4 inches. This one was not full grown yet (Sunset Beach, BC).

Modern Galápagos tortoises can weigh up to 417 kg (919 lb).
I am only 71 kg (156 lbs).
Galápagos tortoises possess two main shell forms that correlate with the biogeographic history of the species group. They exhibit a spectrum of carapace morphology ranging from "saddleback" (denoting upward arching of the front edge of the shell resembling a saddle) to "domed" (denoting a rounded convex surface resembling a dome). When a saddleback tortoise withdraws its head and forelimbs into its shell, a large unprotected gap remains over the neck, evidence of the lack of predation during the evolution of this structure.
Larger islands with humid highlands over 800 m (2,600 ft) in elevation, such as Santa Cruz, have abundant vegetation near the ground. Tortoises native to these environments tend to have domed shells and are larger, with shorter necks and limbs.
Saddleback tortoises originate from small islands less than 500 m (1,600 ft) in elevation with dry habitats (e.g. Española and Pinzón) that are more limited in food and other resources.
Two lineages of Galápagos tortoises possess the Island of Santa Cruz and when observed it is concluded that despite the shared similarities of growth patterns and morphological changes observed during growth, the two lineages and two sexes can be distinguished on the basis of distinct carapace features. Lineages differ by the shape of the vertebral and pleural scutes. Females have a more elongated and wider carapace shape than males.
Carapace shape changes with growth, with vertebral scutes becoming narrower and pleural scutes becoming larger during late ontogeny.

The “Carapace” – as Arnaldo Pomodoro decided to call his winery – required no less than six years’ building work and it was inaugurated and opened to the public – for visits and tastings – in June 2012. It is a unique work of art that calls into question the boundaries between sculpture and architecture. It is the first sculpture in the world in which people can live and work, a unique work in which art and nature, sculpture and wine intermingle, underlining the exceptional nature of both the containing structure and of its contents. It offers itself to one’s gaze as a large copper-covered dome, engraved with fissures that remind one of the furrows in the earth that surrounds it. A sculpted element in the form of a red dart plunging into the soil highlights the work’s place in the landscape. Entering the “Carapace” means penetrating into one of Pomodoro’s sculptures, and one is aware right away of his artistic alphabet, which is immediately recognizable in the internal vault. This is a distinctive, special winery for distinctive, special wines.

When a cow dies, the scavengers come to feast. The Bearded Vulture is timidly waiting for its time to enjoy the meal.
Bone scraps and skin scraps are his usual fare. According to a proven technique, it seizes the bones, climbs to the top and precipitates them in the rocks to break them.
This curious habit earned him the name "Quebrantahuesos" in Spain, meaning "bone breaker.
According to legend, the Greek playwright Aeschylus died with his skull blown off by a tortoise shell dropped by a lammergeier.

The Northern Map Turtle gets both its common and scientific names from the markings on its carapace, which resemble contour lines on a map or chart.
Northern Map Turtles inhabit an area from south Quebec and Ontario to northern Vermont where it lives in the St. Lawrence River drainage basin. Its range extends west through the Great Lakes and into southern Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota, west of the Appalachians, south to Kansas and northwestern Georgia. It also occurs in the Susquehanna River system in Pennsylvania and Maryland and the Delaware River. They inhabit ponds, rivers, and lake, preferring large bodies of water and areas with fallen trees and other debris for basking. These turtles are more often found in rivers than in lakes or ponds. They are found in larger rivers and lakes in the northern portion of their range but are more likely to live in smaller rocky rivers and streams in the south and west.

In morning light they softly glide,
With painted wings and gentle pride.
A fleeting brush of nature’s art,
That lifts the soul and warms the heart.
They dance through air with silent grace,
No rush, no race—just time to chase.
A lesson wrapped in colors bright:
To savor joy, to seek the light.
So pause awhile, let wonder grow,
Where butterflies in silence go.
Their beauty speaks in quiet flight
A tender gift, a pure delight.

Turtle Facts:
Turtles are reptiles.
Turtles have a hard shell that protects them like a shield, this upper shell is called a ‘carapace’.
Turtles also have a lower shell called a ‘plastron’.
Many turtle species (not all) can hide their heads inside their shells when attacked by predators.
Turtles have existed for around 215 million years.
Like other reptiles, turtles are cold blooded.
The largest turtle is the leatherback sea turtle, it can weigh over 900 kg! (2000 lb.)
Turtles lay eggs.
In some species of turtle the temperature determines if the egg will develop into a male or female, lower temperatures lead to a male while higher temperatures lead to a female.

The Florida red-bellied cooter or Florida redbelly turtle (Pseudemys nelsoni) is a species of turtle in the family Emydidae. It can be found in regularly high densities in spring runs, and occasionally can be found in brackish water. This species is active year-round and sp P. nelsoni is endemic to Florida, and southern Georgia.
The Florida redbelly cooter is mainly herbivorous and can be found in nearly any type of aquatic habitat. It spends a large portion of the day basking on logs. They are noted for sometimes laying their eggs in the nest mounds of alligators. The Florida redbelly is closely related to the Peninsula cooter (Pseudemys floridana) and can often be found basking on logs together.
The Florida redbelly can be distinguished from other similar turtles by its distinctive red-tinged plastron (belly) and two cusps (like teeth) on its upper beak. Like most Pseudemys turtles, this species is a fairly large river turtle. Carapace length in mature turtles can range from 20.3 to 37.5 cm (8.0 to 14.8 in). Females, which average 30.5 cm (12.0 in) in carapace length and weigh 4 kg (8.8 lb), are noticeably larger than males, which are around 25 cm (9.8 in) and 1.8 kg (4.0 lb) in mass. – Wikipedia
The pond/common slider (Trachemys scripta) is a species of common, medium-sized, semiaquatic turtle. Hatchling and juvenile pond sliders have a greenish upper shell (carapace), yellow bottom shell (plastron), and green and yellow stripes and markings on their skin. These patterns and colors in the skin and shell fade with age until the carapace is a muted olive green to orange brown or brown and the plastron is a dull yellow or darker.

The banded garden spider is a large species, with a generally ovoid form and bright markings. Mature females may be 13-14.5 mm when fully extended and the carapace of the body typically between 5-6.5 mm in length. Males are substantially smaller, with a body length of only about 1/3 that of the female. Adult males also have prominently enlarged pedipalps projecting from the side of the head and these are used in sperm transfer.
The back of the spider is covered with silvery setae. Numerous dark lines cross the body and yellow banding is usually present as well. The legs are dark yellowish-brown with darker rings.

According to legend, the Greek playwright Aeschylus died with his skull blown off by a tortoise shell dropped by a Bearded Vulture.
In Aragon, the Bearded Vulture has been the object of an extensive plan for the protection, restoration and conservation of the species.
In the National Park of Ordesa/Mont Perdu, around the sector of Escuain, feeding areas have been created,
The main objective is to provide a healthy and poison-free food.
A marking of the juveniles in the nest allows a follow-up of the population. This is how they can be counted and their habits better known.
The sector of the National Park and its immediate surroundings counts about thirty individuals.

The yellow boxfish - Ostracion cubicus is a species of boxfish. It can be found in reefs throughout the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean as well as the southeastern Atlantic Ocean.
O. cubicus reaches a maximum length of 45 centimetres (18 in). As the name suggests, it is box-shaped. Boxfish are also known for their armored and rigid body which in most cases would inhibit locomotion. This disadvantage is offset by the boxfish's carapace shape which is much more advantageous for its adapted style of swimming, known as ostraciiform locomotion. When juvenile, it is bright yellow in color. As it ages, the brightness fades and very old specimens have blue-grey to black coloration with faded yellow.
The yellow boxfish's diet consists mainly of marine algae, but it may also feed on worms, sponges, crustaceans, molluscs, and small fish.
When stressed or injured it releases the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) from its skin, which may prove lethal to fish in surrounding waters.[3] The bright yellow color and black spots are a form of warning coloration (aposematism) to any potential predators.
Yellow boxfish are solitary animals. Breeding occurs during the spring, in small groups that consist of 1 male and 2–4 females. (Wikipedia) Nuweiba, Gulf of Aqaba, Egypt.
The shore crab is the UK's most common crab.
Whilst they normally come in their trademark green they can be found in orange, or as in this case red.
They are medium sized and are identifiable by the pattern of spikes on their shell. In this case five upturned spikes on each side of the carapace and 3 rounded lobes between the eyes.
They are also very feisty ;)
It was also very nice to be able to spend a few days back home after six months of being away.

This handsome Snail Kite made short work of removing the edible portions of the crab from its carapace.
======================
From Wikipedia: The snail kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis) is a bird of prey within the family Accipitridae, which also includes the eagles, hawks, and Old World vultures. Its relative, the slender-billed kite, is now again placed in Helicolestes, making the genus Rostrhamus monotypic. Usually, it is placed in the milvine kites, but the validity of that group is under investigation.
Description:
Snail kites are 36 to 48 cm (14 to 19 in) long with a 99–120 cm (39–47 in) wingspan. They weigh from 300 to 570 g (11 to 20 oz).[3][4] There is very limited sexual dimorphism, with the female averaging only 3% larger than the male. They have long, broad, and rounded wings, which measure 29–33 cm (11–13 in) each. Its tail is long, at 16–21 cm (6.3–8.3 in), with a white rump and undertail coverts. The dark, deeply hooked beak, measuring 2.9–4 cm (1.1–1.6 in) is an adaptation to its diet. The tarsus is relatively long as well, measuring 3.6–5.7 cm (1.4–2.2 in).
The adult male has dark blue-gray plumage with darker flight feathers. The legs and cere are red. The adult female has dark brown upperparts and heavily streaked pale underparts. She has a whitish face with darker areas behind and above the eye. The legs and cere are yellow or orange. The juvenile is similar to an adult female, but the crown is streaked. Adults have red or orangish-brown irises, while juveniles have dark brown irises.
It flies slowly with its head facing downwards, looking for its main food, the large apple snails. For this reason, it is considered a molluscivore.

Lybia tessellata is a species of small crab in the family Xanthidae. It is found in shallow parts of the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean. Like other members of the genus Lybia, it is commonly known as the pom-pom crab or boxer crab because of its habit of carrying a sea anemone around in each of its claws, these resembling pom-poms or boxing gloves. L. tessellata is a small crab growing to a width of about 2.5 cm (1 in). The carapace is trapezoid in shape and the margin has a distinct tooth-shaped projection on either side, just behind the short-stalked eye. The surface of the carapace is marked into several differently coloured, geometric regions by a network of dark lines giving it the appearance of stained glass. (Wikipedia)

Grapsus grapsus is one of the most common crabs along the western coast of the Americas. It is known variously as, "red rock crab", "abuete negro", and along with crabs such as Percnon gibbesi as, "Sally Lightfoot". It is found along the Pacific coast of Mexico, Central America, South America (as far south as northern Peru), and on nearby islands, including the Galápagos Islands.
It is also found along the Atlantic coast of South America but is replaced in the eastern Atlantic Ocean (Ascension Island and West Africa) by its congener Grapsus adscensionis.
Grapsus grapsus is a typically shaped crab, with five pairs of legs, the front two bearing small, blocky, symmetrical chelae. The other legs are broad and flat, with only the tips touching the substrate. The crab's round, flat carapace is slightly longer than 8 centimetres (3.1 in).
Adults are quite variable in colour; some are muted brownish red, some mottled or spotted brown, pink, or yellow.
This crab lives amongst the rocks at the often turbulent, windy shore, just above the limit of the sea spray. It feeds on algae primarily, sometimes sampling other plant matter and dead animals. It is a quick-moving and agile crab, and hard to catch. Not considered very edible by humans, it is used as bait by fishermen. G. grapsus has been observed in an apparent cleaning symbiosis taking ticks from marine iguanas on the Galápagos Islands. – Wikipedia
