I had no idea what to do for today's SP....well, actually I didn't have much time for creativity... This morning I woke up to a car that wouldn't run... At first it looked like I need to replace the alternator...at $350+... I am also dealing with transmission problems. So the place that was looking into the alternator problem took the van over to the transmission place. At this time I do not know what the situation is with the transmission... but I do know that the alternator is alright... whew! But, let me tell you about my van... it is a 98 Dodge Caravan. I have had it since my son was 2 months old...he will be 8 next week... nearly 8 years I have had this van. In that 8 years this van has taken myself and my kids on a round trip vacation from Tennessee to Utah... and then it moved myself and my kids back to Utah in March of 2005 (wow, it is so hard to believe that it has almost been three years since I moved back to Utah). I don't recall exactly how many miles the van had on it when I bought it... something like 60,000... It now has 210,000+ miles on it. It has been a good van. A pretty reliable form of transportation. Many people ask me why I, a mother of only 2, drive a van. Well at the time I purchased it I actually had 4 kids in my family... I had 2 stepsons... we needed the space. Before I purchased my van, my oldest stepson would ask me what my dream car was...my answer was "a minivan". Seriously, it was my dream car... From the time I found out that I was pregnant with my daughter I wanted a minivan. So, yeah, my van has served its purpose and has served me well. In recent years I have put at least $2,000 dollars in it and I have said that if the transmission goes it will be time to say good bye. So today, without knowing the state of the transmission, I did go ahead and test drive some cars. I drove an Explorer (my current dream car) and a Fusion. I love both. I love the feeling of driving an SUV... the feeling of sitting higher... I do not care for the feeling of driving a car... that is until I drove the Fusion. My friend Greg just recently bought a Fusion, and I have thought it was nice to ride in...but wow! What a treat to drive one.... I love it. I do not feel like I am driving a car. The better gas mileage is a major plus...as is the fact that I can buy a newer (2007) Fusion with 5 year warranty for the same price that I can buy an older (2004) Explorer. Anyhow, I was able to drive the Fusion home for the next 2 days and get a real feel for it. Tomorrow I should hear about the transmission. If things are somewhat alright (meaning I can still drive it for a while longer before it completely goes out) I have the decision of whether to go ahead and get rid of the van or drive it to its death.... hmmm, a new car sounds so nice!

The title of this SP, "someone to look up to" is in reference to my mother. She has always been such a help to me... a major help in the past few years. When I called her and told her I was leaving my ex, she flew out to help me move...and let me tell you, if you need someone to help you move (especially in a hurry), it's my mom... she figured out ways to pack every square inch of that van... she stuffed clothing in empty spaces EVERYWHERE!!! She is there when I need her. I am very independent but it is nice to know that I can receive help from her when I need it. And today, she was able to come help me after school with getting around and going to the car dealership to look at cars. So this is to mom.... I love you. You are the greatest, you have gone through a lot in life and have never given up! I appreciate everything you are and everything you do. When I grow up, I want to be like you!

My mom is the smartest woman in the world in my eyes LOVE's to you MOM!!!

He helped me out recently with some car troubles I had, a good buddy indeed.

When our car broke down on New Years day in Urbandale, Iowa, this couple just happened to stumble upon us. They went way out of their way to help locate a shop that was open, a tow truck company that was open, and even drove us back and forth to our hotel multiple times. It is amazing how generous and helpful these people were to complete strangers. It was this kind of generosity that made our trip that much richer.

I have a friend who was a certified mechanic which meant that whenever we had car issues, we'd be the ones working on it. I definitely got my mechanical knowledge from him. My 240SX had served me well, but had spun a bearing on the way out to Radium. What better excuse to do an engine swap! So, out comes the KA24DE and in goes the CA18DET. A smaller and lighter, but more powerful engine thanks to the turbocharger. Not so young, but still stupid today. To keep the stock AC working, we fabricated some rather strong brackets with our Asian Engineering and terrible MIG welding skills.

I've liked cars since I was little and remember watching Formula 1 on TV in Hong Kong when Prost and Senna were dominating with McLaren Honda in that iconic Marlboro logo'ed car. There's no tobacco sponsorship in F1 anymore and the cars have totally changed. They were too crazy in the 80's with the turbos and although the lap times are fastest now, it's all due to tires and aerodynamics rather than raw power. I don't own any TAG Heuer watches, but that's where their racing heritage comes from. TAG was a turbo manufacturer and Heuer was a watch company. Somehow for whatever reason TAG bought Heuer and TAG Heuer was formed. Their Formula 1 quartz watches are classic and still quite recognizable. A very strange thing to say about a quartz watch.

I had an early appointment with my Urologist this morning. After it I went for a drive and took photos...I even drove past the Coachella Valley Firebirds arena...which could be done by the end of this year!

At the warm shores of the Salton Sea in southern CA, we had car problems.

What a great place to break down – we were grateful that it happened there – but nonetheless, the problem still had to be solved. I lay under cars a lot in my life, with dirty hands and banged up knuckles, and although I managed to single-handedly get us out of so many serious car problems on all our crazy travels, I never enjoyed it. Any such skills I may have picked up over half a life time traveling with cars came uninvited and reluctantly. But now I have them, and that determines how I react when the motor home doesn’t start up anymore. I learned to fix things; I couldn’t do it any other way. Others have cultivated skills how to find help – hard to know what is ultimately better. Nowadays I’m much more interested in understanding things than in changing them (fixing them).

What we usually perceive as a problem is an event, a situation that is related to our self as an individual, as a person. A problem is an interpretation of a situation, the effect of a subjective “view”, a judgment referring to an expectation. One has to be conscious of one’s self to even be able to have a problem. A problem can exist for me but not as such. The universe doesn’t know problems. Problems don’t really exist, we invent them, we create them, and we have them. When you look closely, our mind is nothing but a problem factory. The mysterious and miraculous thing is that it is at the same time also an incredible problem-solving machine. So often this process of making and solving problems is our life. It consumes almost all our energy and blinds us to the underlying universal “ok-ness”, the most basic quality of everything before we have a thought about it, the marvelous wholeness that allows and contains our unique nature to process and manipulate everything, and yet offers freedom.

You are looking at my "Aw, crap" moment of the day. No ... not the 9 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. With the sun shining, 9 degrees feels fairly comfortable to anyone who has been living through the recent cold snap in the Midwest. The "aw, crap" is for the amber "Service Engine Soon" light that had just lit on my dash as I was venturing out to find inspiration for my photo-a-day project. With the engine knocking, and not wishing to risk being stranded, my trip turned out to be a short one.

What is so frustrating is that I just spent a tidy sum in repair bills last week, and only five days ago purchased a new set of tires (chronicled on Day 4 of 2010). I have friends who have driven their cars for a few hundred thousand miles without having to take a second mortgage to keep them on the road. So while 93,709 miles may not seem like much, it is the most miles I've ever put on a vehicle, and I am uncomfortable with the idea of having to pay one expensive repair after another (last year was not good in that regard). With this last repair and a new set of tires, I I hoped to say good-bye to repair shops for a little while.

The knock the engine is making is more of a steady thumping that is felt rather than heard. I don't know what is causing it, but I do know this is the first time my engine hasn't purred like a kitten when the ignition is turned. I'm hoping the problem has to do with all of the recent, sub-zero weather we've been suffering through, and is not something mechanical. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed when I venture out again on Sunday.

Okay, not a fun way to spend Monday morning. My car stalled out in the middle of The Alameda (major road in San Jose) in the middle of the lane and in the rain. This is my view as I sit in one tow truck as the AAA guys try to hoist my car up on another tow truck.

Well, it turns out that small feeling that something was going on the transmission...got bigger in a hurry. Pam was driving it this morning and at the Saline Post Office, discovered that the car would not go forward - only in reverse. I am glad that she is well and this did not happen in a worse location. Ugh! Car is with Scott at Saline Automotive...fingers crossed. Thanks AAA and America 1 Towing of Saline. And that to Scott from Saline Automotive for taking a look at it two days earlier than the appointment I just made!

I purchased a LEMON!

So here's the story on my car. I used to have a '88 Blazer. Shitty, Butchy, Gas-gustler but it got me from point A to point B. I was smart enough to go to a local used car dealer and purchase a 2003 Nissan Sentra. I figured it would be good and gas and it was a smooth ride compared to my Tonka Truck! I've only had it for 5 months but its given me so many problems!!

Front Strust

Motor Mounts

Brakes

Link Kit

Ball bearing and the arm that holds it all together.

The dealer fucked it up when they fixed the struts but they won't do anything!!! They ignore my calls. They yeah, yeah me off the phone!

My car is at the shop right now. I have no way to get to work tomorrow. I'm sad.

This is the place I stayed for the first few days of my break. It wasn't quite so restful as I would have hoped, my car decided to start playing up on the way there.

I had a good idea what the problem was and knew I had to get it fixed as soon as possible! So I had the hassle of trying to get it booked in to be checked.

The car broke down completely just as I got it to the dealership. It was the Crankshaft sensor as I suspected and the they were wonderful and fitted a part off one of the showroom models (usually you have to wait for parts to be ordered!).

I just love stopping at this place, they do wonderful breakfasts and the evening meals (which are optional) are just delicious, they even have an honesty bar so you can sit and chill out with a pre dinner drink!

The start of the Red Sea Challenge, a 7000 km trip to Jordan started at the beach of Zandvoort in The Netherlands. Some unfortunate participants has some trouble getting of from the starting location in on the beach site. Whilst trying to pull this BMW out of the sand, the bumper broke of and the had a punctured tire. What a start!
