Storm (my Honda Civic Sedan LX 2019) at the drive-in car wash. Certainly, it was about time for him to get a much-needed cleaning! I was with my mom at the time. We went to the Auto Pride Car Wash along Silver Creek Rd in San Jose, CA. She took her CR-V here as well and I also wanted a car wash so we brought my car here afterwards lol. Hope y'all are having a nice weekend so far! (Saturday late afternoon, March 20, 2021)

*Did you know? There are benefits to taking your car to the car wash. If your car is looking cleaner, not just the exterior but the interior as well, it will help de-clutter your mind. It’s surprising how a clean car can affect the way you feel about it. Additionally, car washes can protect your investment. A car wash helps protect the paint on your car by clearing away acid rain, dirt and road salt that can cause rust and corrosion to your car. Plus, keeping your vehicle in pristine shape means you’ll be safe on the road and better able to handle routine maintenance...

Getting ready to sleep now, but this oil filter was really stubborn to come off. I fought with it for hours and was super frustrated. I was ready to go to a garage to get it done, but the earliest appointment was in 48 hours, so I ended using Amazon same-day delivery to get a different filter wrench to what I had. It finally worked, but what should have been 1-hour max (set-up, oil change, tidy), turned into 5 hours. Well, I did go for a walk with my pup and asssemble a computer chair, and in the end finished the oil change, so I did get a couple things done for the day.

Here are the four Bosch FR8DS spark plugs that I just removed from my 1996 Volkswagen Mk3 Golf Harlequin.

The car has its original 2.0L "ABA" engine, with 180,000 miles (about 290,000 km).

I've owned and/or worked on a fairly wide variety of VWs and other cars since I was in my teens, and this may be the cleanest, most uniform set of used spark plugs I've ever seen. Of course, I replaced them with another set of Bosch FR8DS plugs.

May Long Weekend coming up and that means time for the summer oil change.

I was checking the valve clearances on my 1978 VW Rabbit in 1985. Solid lifters - remember them?

(Scanned 35mm color negative)

The paperclip is your friend.

Our Volvo XC70 is a bit of a dinosaur. It has a 2.4 litre, 5 cylinder turbo charged diesel engine with an automatic gearbox. We've owned it since 2016 when it was 5 years old - so it's getting on a bit at 14 years old and 145k miles on the clock.

It's been highly reliable with very little going wrong so far.

However, a 'Bonnet open' message appeared on the dashboard the other day, and wouldn't go away. A quick search reveals that the switch (in the left hand bonnet latch) has gone faulty and the switch is permanently open.

In the meantime I've had to link out the socket - of course many cars don't have this feature in the first place. The end of a paperclip has been inserted here before waterproofing with a layer of insulating tape.

Is this the start of the 'Bangernomics' phase of ownership?

I used to own a high mileage 94 E34 525iT between 2001 - 2004 that we really liked. I miss wrenching around on it. Since it was our 2nd utility car I was able to have it out of commission over a weekend while I maintained it. Did things like shocks, brakes, oil changes, bushings and a million little interior tweaks and fixes to try and reduce the rattles, squeaks and general broken bits. This Bentley manual was my trusted friend that got me through a lot of projects. Saw it sitting on my bookshelf and it brought back some memories.

The main downsides where it had minor head gasket seepage and our dog would get carsick in the trunk on occasion, other than that it was a great car. We only have one car now so I have to get maintenance done quickly and end up paying someone to do the routine stuff.

Do this before removing any of the bolts that support the engine from below. The support bar's legs fit perfectly in the grooves on the fenders. The fenders are sturdy enough to support the engine; the top part of the fender is reinforced as it rests on the body sheet metal.
