View form the Carfax Tower

Carfax is the junction of St Aldate's (south), Cornmarket Street (north), Queen Street (west) and the High Street (east) in Oxford, England. It is considered to be the center of the city. The name "Carfax" derives from the Latin quadrifurcus via the French carrefour, both of which mean "crossroads". The Carfax Tower, also known as St. Martin's Tower (it is the remaining part of what was the City Church of St. Martin of Tours) is a prominent landmark and provides a look-out over the town. Carfax is at the junction of St Aldate's (south), Cornmarket Street (north), Queen Street (west) and the High Street (east) in Oxford, England.[1] It is considered to be the centre of the city.

It had to be done....... I've 'flipped' my previous upload and made enough subtle changes to hopefully cause you to question whether this isn't a real image.

From Wikipedia : "The Blavatnik School of Government is located in the University of Oxford's Radcliffe Observatory Quarter on Woodstock Road, however its main entrance is on Walton Street. The building is designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron to promote open discussion, interaction and collaboration. The central forum is inspired by the idea of openness and transparency and connects all the floors together. Construction work started in autumn 2013, after some controversy, and ended in late 2015. The building is controlled by a combination of systems and technology that helps minimise its environmental impact.

The building is taller than Carfax Tower in the centre of Oxford, this dominating the site and causing opposition to the scheme by local residents in the Jericho district of the city and elsewhere. The site is immediately to the south of the café/bar Freud, in the historic 1836 Greek revival St Paul's Church on Walton Street. The scheme has been opposed by the cafe's owner, David Freud, due to its size compared to the church building. The site is also opposite the classical Oxford University Press building. In Spring 2013, a public meeting was held in St Barnabas Church and the building was described as "a concrete marshmallow".

Carfax Tower awaiting opening. 😱 🔓 Morning has well and truly Broken.

This tower has the second best view in Oxford after the University Church of St Mary.

At the top, you’ll see the historic spires and domes of the city in the background with the shopping streets in the foreground.

You do get a better view of Christ Church College from this tower, but for us it’s not a patch on St Mary’s tower nearby. Half way up, there’s an information room with a short video about the tower and Oxford.

High's and Low's.

A busy run up to Christmas means I'm having to delve into my 'Rainy Day' collection to find some shots I made earlier...... Here's a shot of the gently curving High Street in Oxford lit by some lovely late afternoon sunlight.

Click here to see more of my Oxford shots : www.flickr.com/photos/darrellg/albums/72157601474823518

From Wikipedia : "The street has been described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "one of the world's great streets". It forms a gentle curve and is the subject of many prints, paintings, photographs, etc. The vista looking west towards Carfax with University College on the left and The Queen's College on the right is an especially popular view. There are many historical buildings on the street, including the University of Oxford buildings and colleges. Locally the street is often known as "The High"."

My love for the Yugo GV cannot be put into words. But I can say that I saw more here at this place than I've seen in the past 15 years!

This one is in bits but is actually the best example they have. It's a customers's car that I think is waiting on either parts or a payment forwarded to continue the project.

Oxford has long had a fraught relationship between what is known as the Town and Gown and here it is almost written in Christmas Lights.

Looking to the Carfax Tower, (the low crenellated church tower) that is the western end of the High and the main crossroads at the centre of the city. Beyond it is the busy, commercial part of Oxford, the shops, chain stores and theatres serving the town.

The Christmas lights on the High reach only a little further than the picturesque indoor market which is just beyond the spire of the early 18th century All Saints church, which has been Lincoln College's library since the 1970s.

Lockdown has been devastating the livelihoods of all in the hospitality trade, here is one victim, The Crown in Horsham. How we pray that they make it through.

I also pray that the aviation sector makes it, as that's where I earn my living.

It's lovely to see a new Citaro in 2024, just a shame that my visit to Horsham only gave me one chance to snap it, a chance that failed as half the town seemed to descend on the Carfax when this bus arrived!
