An endless universe

Yet we keep looking through

The eyeglass in reverse

Don't feed the people

But we feed the machines".

Two fire trucks block three lanes of traffic on the northbound Clearview Expressway after two vehicles (out of view on the other side of the fire engines) collided and bounced off each other, bringing traffic to a standstill. Four injured parties are sitting off to the right. I stood just outside my car in the middle lane for a moment to get this photo, but it didn't take long before the firemen moved both disabled vehicles and sent the rest of us on our way. ► █░▓ An Off-Road Try By An On-Road Car - This beefy BMW ended up with a few minor bruises only inches away from the lamppost. His brave climb of the accumulated roadside snow finished the illusion for the owner that his car can-do everything. Just a bit of black ice cancels out all the differences between the cars and makes your shiny status symbol equal to a wreck on wheels. With the push of winter tires in recent years people tend to use the chains much less than before. But a wreck with worn-out summer tires wrapped in old-fashioned chains, is – on black ice – a clear winner over your 4-wheel shiny stallion with new winter tires and no chains.

-Early night hours at 1400 m elevation, the most slippery night so far here. I still have bruises from numerous falls when hiking that night. The following morning a 33-year old woman, mother of 2, lost her life under a WSV-tractor, right in the downtown's middle point. An inexplicably gruesome tragedy for this small town.

Cameraphone jpeg edited in Snapseed. I'm a bit proud of this snapshot as I wasn't stable on my feet either and the other hand was busy controlling a huge dog stronger than myself. So I missed the Police and a rescue Hummer in the frame.

It makes me so sad to know that there are people out there who somehow slip through the cracks. Their loved ones are just not able to help them, it is a long, hard and lonely battle I am sure, one that I hope we can find a way to eliminate. Suicide by drugs is only second to suicide through depression and of course there are other methods of suicide. There is much written about this serious problem that one can research, the sites are endless and not being an expert on this subject I find it hard to choose a specific one to link to, however, I do list 3 interesting quotes:

The sun also sets. - Ernest Hemingway

The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling. -

David Foster Wallace.

Killing oneself is, anyway, a misnomer. We don't kill ourselves. We are simply defeated by the long, hard struggle to stay alive. When somebody dies after a long illness, people are apt to say, with a note of approval, "He fought so hard." And they are inclined to think, about a suicide, that no fight was involved, that somebody simply gave up. This is quite wrong. - Sally Brampton, Shoot the Damn Dog: A Memoir of Depression

Nobody gonna take my car

I'm gonna race it to the ground

Nobody gonna beat my car

It's gonna break the speed of sound

Oooh it's a killing machine

It's got everything

Like a driving power big fat tires

And everything

I love it and I need it

I bleed it

Yeah it's a wild hurricane

Alright hold tight

I'm a highway star

This is actually the set of the 2005 Steven Spielberg movie, "War of the Worlds", starring Tom Cruise. This is part of the tram tour at Universal Studios. This is just one portion of the set. It was a frightening scene and surreal at the same time. The scale and the attention to detail (that's a real plane btw) was impeccable and just mind-blowing.

If you go to www.waroftheworlds.com/ , the opening page is part of this set.

Little Johnny is traveling south on Northwood Drive at a high rate of speed (hint). At Tasha Drive, Johnny slams on his brakes. The Buick slides down a 6% slope about 345 feet where Daddy's car then collides with a guard rail at approximately 10 mph. The road was dry and its surface "traveled asphalt."

Question: How fast was Johnny traveling when skidding first began?

Extra credit: Were the skid marks created by the front or rear tires and why?

My first job of the day called out to this Mercedes Benz SL 55. The driver of this swerved to avoid 3 deer running down the road on a country lane near Bawtry. The driver escaped without any injury.

Police officers arrive from reported morning car crash at the intersection.

A call went out for an auto accident on James Madison Highway in Haymarket, VA. Initial reports indicated a camper was involved with multiple patients trapped. Units from Haymarket and Gainesville arrived on scene and immediately called for two medivacs.

Police on the scene stated that the minivan, traveling southbound, crossed a double yellow line to pass another vehicle traveling in the same direction. The minivan then struck a Winnebego in a head on collision.

No information on this one for the moment, I may populate this report later with text but for now its a big hole in the ground, aka a Mine that has a pretty awesome feature to it…a huge cascade of abandoned vehicles flooding in from a hole at the top into a lake, now presumably full of all sorts of skin rotting chemicals :)…
