Happy Thanksgiving and be safe!

California Highway 1 view to the Pacific, Point Reyes and Bolinas

a mixed flock of Grackles, Blackbirds and Cowbirds have come back to the meadow area. The sounds are amazing as at least a hundred birds enjoyed this 43 degree day. I might be from the West Coast, but this is feeling mighty Spring-like in my book!

By the way, is anyone else struggling with getting their shots uploaded? I could not post yesterday....

Not everyone's cup of tea, but they are quite new to me and I find their patterning enlivens the leafless landscape around me

the red-wing blackbirds, grackles, cow birds, starlings and crows seemed almost giddy this week when our layer of snow melted off the fields and the temps finally began to climb. The meadows look so anemic after a hard winter but for the pop that these mixed flocks bring to the landscape as they begin their hunt for early field fare!

I believe this is a juvenile. He was huge! You can't ask for a better fall morning....

after buzzing the hillside like a skilled fighter pilot, this sharpie came to rest and assessed further possibilities as the small sparrows scattered into the safety of the wood's canopy and brambled patches. Not deterred in the least to go through the thicket of the overgrown vegetation or leafed out trees, he was immediately back in the air trying to flush out those who had got away...or so they thought..... I did not see him make a kill, which was fine by me, but I did have the privilege/thrill of watching this repeated behavior of circling, flushing and ability to turn on a dime that he possessed while chasing his various prey for a solid 45 minutes! His amazing speed and endless energy left me thinking that he did not come up empty taloned!

the sky burns with the colors of the winter sunsets and if anything, I always feel like I should desaturate because they are so vivid and impossible to believe. On one of those nights I decided to try some multiple exposures and this is one result

This juvenile male Yellow-bellied sapsucker seemed determined to get some relief from the sweltering heat wave with this interesting behavior of spreading out his wings and panting...yes, like a dog.

"Panting: Like dogs, birds can pant to cool down. When a bird pants, it breathes quickly, moving air across the moist surfaces of its lungs, throat, and mouth. This moisture then evaporates, which absorbs heat from the bird’s body. Each time the bird breathes out, some of this heat is carried outside, leaving the bird feeling cooler.

Feather Fluffing: Birds lift their feathers and hold their wings out so that air can reach their skin and carry away some of their body heat."

One of my favorite plants is Echium candicans, the pride of Madeira. Her architectural form lends itself to the light. She attracts hummingbirds, bees and butterflies and makes a tremendous entrance in the spring with large blue/purple/pink flowers. This is her beginning form, crisp with new growth and spring rain to get her started.

A female Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeding on salvia. I think it might be a juvenile.
