Sally Holmes is the most hardworking rose. She is still blooming even after being pounded with rain. Her ever changing form ranges from elegant to blousy and her color palette moves from soft white to hues of pink
19th Century glasshouses were popular throughout California's early history. The Conservatory of Flowers is the oldest surviving municipal wood and glass greenhouse in the United States with the central dome of this elaborate Victorian architecture rising close to 60 feet. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake did little damage to the elegant structure and its white countenance is something to behold as it sits overlooking Conservatory Valley.

Watching this young Sharp-shinned go after his prey through the dense ceanothus down on the ground was pretty revealing as to how tenacious this hunter is.

what is noteworthy about this shot for me is the fact that it is a lovely juvenile which is where the blue eyes come into play...also, it is a female. "The eye colour of the juvenile Acorn Woodpecker changes colour before their first prebasic or post juvenile molt is complete" It's nice to know who you are photographing.....

In the very early morning hours the light and wing position were not very conducive for much detail in the face so I brought up the shadows and played around with the highlights....but I thought the wing stretch was so fluid and beautiful in this raptor that it was worthwhile to post

The morning sun highlighted his beautiful form high up in the California Buckeye and you could see this beautiful young band-tail beginning to develop more fully in his coloring and feather details.
They are fantastic birds and worth knowing about. Here is a little more information:
"There has been an uptick of interest in Band-tailed Pigeons in recent years. A group of researchers are committed to de-extinction of the Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), and they are moving rapidly toward that goal. Their method involves working out the genomes of both species and the systematic replacement of Band-tailed Pigeon with Passenger Pigeon genes: “converting viable Band-tailed DNA to viable Passenger Pigeon DNA.” They have now fully sequenced both species, so stay tuned!"
many thanks for stopping by to visit and share....risa
I recently noticed a large crow size bird flying in the rain. The wings were soaked and the flashing white underwings stood out on the overcast day. I realized that what I was seeing was actually a male Pileated Woodpecker! I had heard pounding and calling over the last month. On this particular day, I discovered two flying in and out of a lightly wooded area where this still living Ash tree stands. I did see him strip pieces of bark and find beetle larvae. I'm hoping these two have a nest somewhere nearby and young ones will be in my future!
