My husband and I walked along the lower prom and could see this young lady eating some food. When we went up to the upper promenade I couldn't resist taking this shot of the opportunist gull waiting in the wings.

I moved on before the action unfolded.

I thought it would be fun to ask viewers to caption this. Any suggestions?

A thanksgiving abstract for your enjoyment. Please feel free to caption this photo...

But also let me explain: I had the idea for a while to do a prop box/photo booth type of shot for my One and I, and I thought it would be a good shot for this week's theme. I am grateful beyond words for him, the way we get to create together, share each other's passions, and for the way we can make each other laugh. We have the same sense of humor, and with the two of us, lots of crazy props, and the camera set to interval timer... well, we got many "abstract" shots that make us laugh every time we see them.

I'll post more photos from this set later, but just wanted to get my challenge submission posted. This is the first time this year I am posting a shot out of sequence! I'm still working on last week's "Every picture tells a story" image. It has much more editing than I planned for, but it will be worth it when I'm done!

Of course, it could just be another automatic fire alarm, but who really knows.

Maybe you can figure out just what is going on, and let me know; coming up with these captions is tough sometimes...

Winning caption: "Early attempts to carve ownership rights into the moon were largely unsuccessful." (Jordan, from New Jersey)

What's really going on: These two beams originate from Goddard's Laser Ranging Facility. No, we're not trying to destroy the moon (or a Death Star, as many caption submissions suggested). We use these lasers to keep track of NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, managed and operated here at Goddard and currently in orbit of the moon. The lasers can pinpoint LRO's exact location within about four inches. That's amazingly accurate, given LRO is about 250,000 miles away!

This photograph was taken on Sept. 10, 2010, when Goddard celebrated the first International Observe the Moon Night.

We loved the variants on "That's no moon..." from Star Wars and "Don't cross the streams" from Ghostbusters, but there were so many that we couldn't pick just one of each!

Oh yeah, this is where I slipped off the fallen trunk!

I was walking to the mall when I suddenly spotted this person standing around with a box on their head. I couldn't believe it. They were just standing there with a box on their head, like it was something people do everyday. Luckily I happened to be testing out my new Yashica 200AF SLR camera, so I quickly took a shot. Not my best shot, because I was laughing, but I knew I had to get this shot. I guy driving by in a truck saw the whole thing, and he was laughing too. He gave me the thumbs up as he drove by.

What's really going on: Air showers, such as this one, are a relatively common occurrence at NASA Goddard. Air showers to blow away bits of dust help protect sensitive satellites as we work on them in our clean rooms.

Winning caption: "Supporters of the Desert Energy Atomic Testing Hatch would have been wise to spell out its initials before ever allowing live viewings." (Adam, from Philadelphia)

What's really going on: Seen here is Dr. Robert Goddard, often called the father of modern rocketry. (NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is named in his honor.) Dr. Goddard began rocketry experimentation in Massachusetts in the early 1920s. In the '30s, as the scope of his work grew he moved his research to New Mexico, constructing a launch range some miles outside Roswell. This concrete dugout was consturcted 50 feet from Dr. Goddard's launching tower, so that an observer (in this image, Dr. Goddard himself) could watch a launch at close range. (By comparison, the minimum safe viewing distance from a space shuttle launch was about 3 miles.)
