I shot this at Fort Desoto Park this past weekend and thought the photo was pretty funny when you look at the expression of the fish.

I am at the airport getting ready for my flight to Phuket. Got an hour to check-in so I'm doing a quick post. This was from the Water Taxi Station in downtown Bangkok early morning. Bangkok has plenty of methods of getting around town and the water taxi is one of the best way to see the city from a different perspective.

Check out these lazy gators laying around in Paynes Prairie. These guys are soaking up the last few rays from the setting sun. I can’t believe the number of gators in this place. I’ve never seen so many wild gators in their natural environment before. There might be only four in this photo, but there were actually tons more covering the entire shore.

This is the poolside mountain view I get most mornings here in Phuket, Thailand. I say "most mornings" because this time of year the clouds are very thick. I'm going to try a pano of the pool so you can see the whole view. It's incredible, hopefully the pano comes out right.

captainkimo.com/working-on-100-hdr-posts-before-i-leave
This is an image of what 39 HDR photos look like. I've been working on trying to get one hundred HDR photography posts for my blog while I'm gone. Hopefully I can get it done before I leave for Southeast Asia.
These 100 HDR photos will be automatically posted daily while I'm in Cambodia and Thailand. This is to keep CaptainKimo.com updated with fresh photos so you won't miss me too much.
It usually takes me a couple of hours to process and post a single HDR photo. I'm very impressed I even managed to get 39 of them. Even more surprising is that the photos look great! I thought they would end up looking "okay," since I wasn't spending much time on them. Goes to show less is more!
To help me process my photos quicker I've been using the HDR batch feature in Photomatix. I've even created a Default Captain Kimo tone mapping setting which has worked great for 90% of the photos. I've also created an action in Photoshop to apply all my defaults action. That has also worked out fantastic and has saved me a lot of time.
Keep posted cause I'll be sharing the default tone map settings in a future post. Maybe when I release my next article, which will show you how to use the tone mapping feature in Photomatix more efficiently. This article will be written for those of you who have a hard time with the tone mapping part of the HDR process.
With all that said... I'll still be posting from my trip so don't you worry. Well.. that's only if I have internet access, which from what I was told should be fairly easy to get in Thailand. However I can't say the same for Cambodia.
captainkimo.com/wave-breaking-over-rocks-at-promthep-cape...
This was the closest I got to the bottom of Promthep Cape while I was there shooting the sunset. I didn't want to get too close since I was wearing my flip flops. Flip flops and rock climbing equals accident waiting to happen. Right now I think its a little too early to visit the hospital in Phuket, Thailand. I'll wait till I get a little closer to leaving before get crazy.

Here's the HDR sunrise photo from yesterday morning, the same morning when I woke up at 3am and couldn't go back to bed. Still trying to get myself adjusted to the time schedule here in Bangkok. Not doing a great job since I woke at 3am again today. I'm trying to making myself productive again by writing this post. Also This might be the last post for a couple of days. It all depends on internet access. I'm leaving Bangkok for Buriram this morning, about six hours of driving from Bangkok. Out there in Buriram it's like going back in time so internet access is limited. But me being a techno geek I like it there. The people are easy going and super friendly. The culture and life style is simple compared to Bangkok's over crowded fast pace society. I can't wait!
captainkimo.com/mottled-duck-flying-through-loxahatchee-n...
Thursday I went to a total of six parks to shoot birds. I manage to get about a dozen good shots of birds in flight from that all day excursion. This Mottled Duck flying through the air was shot at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Reserve. Photo is a single exposure image tone mapped using Photomatix Pro to bring out detail and color.

captainkimo.com/mangrove-from-everglades-national-park-fl...
Everglades National Park has some very beautiful Mangrove Trees. I really love the roots from this mangrove and how it stretches out so beautifully. I had to convert this HDR image into a black and white photo because of the intense light and lack of color. I was tempted to add some texture to the image but I think it stands without it pretty very well.

captainkimo.com/white-heron-from-grassy-waters-preserve
I photographed this White Heron at Grassy Waters Preserve, a very cool wetland area which is conveniently located a few minutes away from where I live. Anyone looking to see the everglades in it’s most natural state, Grassy Waters is the place to be. This preserve also has an abundance of wildlife which can be be seen throughout the day, including otters, gators, boars, and many different birds.
White Herons are very common in South Florida, and can be seen almost anywhere near water. These birds are extremely beautiful given the right circumstances.
To photograph any white bird properly you’ll need to drop the f-stop by at least one. This is to maintain details in the feathers so they don’t get blown out.
No HDR on this image. HDR wasn’t necessary because the light was behind me and there wasn’t much dynamic range overall to be captured.
Processing was done using Photoshop Elements 9 for the entire photo. I was amazed to find that PSE9 does have Layer Masking, which brings it a step closer to the Standard version of Photoshop.
So how much processing did I do to this image? Quite a bit… you see the composition I wanted was spread out among 5 photos. I took pieces from each photo to make this image come out the way I wanted. The main image of the White Heron was missing a quarter of the right wing as well as the head. By bringing in parts of the White Heron from different images I was able to build a spectacular photo of this beautiful bird.
I really put PSE9 to the test with this image and it processed this photo admirably. However, printing the photo was a different story. The print feature in PSE9 still lacks basic options making it very difficult to print from, forcing me to go to the standard version of Photoshop just to print the photo.
