Capitalism rules in communist China. This is a Starbucks inside the Forbidden City proving once again that everything has a price. One thing I learned after my trip is that Starbucks, McDonald's and Coca-Cola control the planet. We are just pawns in their quest for intergalactic dominance.

The artifacts of commerce lie fallow in an apparently empty major port city. The red/copper/green palette evokes a muddled American banknote. These cues prompt the viewer to examine our complicated relationship with commerce: its necessity, how it benefits humanity, and the need to make sure it is constrained by a substantive focus on human well-being.

One hundred and twenty years ago, in 1896, the original drawing appeared on the cover of Puck magazine. It portrayed Valeriano Weyler as the villain then. I just changed the heads---little else was or has changed (!?)
