The view looking down the spiral staircase inside the First Cape Henry Lighthouse. It's in great shape thanks to Preservation Virginia. It was completed in 1792 and is a National Historic Landmark located on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. Once at the top you'll have a great view of the second Cape Henry Lighthouse completed in 1881 and the coastline. The view of the second Cape Henry Lighthouse from inside the First Cape Henry Lighthouse. The reflection of the storm panes can be seen from inside the lighthouse. The second Cape Henry Lighthouse was completed in 1881. The First Cape Henry Lighthouse was completed in 1792. I'm not sure why I had the SS and ISO cranked up. I remember it was so bright out I couldn't see the LCD screen. This was taken from the inside so I must've not changed it. Only so many are allowed up at a time. When my group came down they stopped letting people in because of the heat. It gets hot in there in the summer. #NPS #CapeHenryLighthouse #U.S.NationalRegisterOfHistoricPlaces #phare #Leuchtturm

The original historic brick Cape Henry lighthouse dates from 1792 and you can now climb to the top in Virginia Beach, Virginia. From the historic lighthouse, you can see the "new" lighthouse, which dates from 1881.

The Cape Henry lighthouse has long served to protect and guide vessels entering and leaving the Chesapeake Bay. Today two lighthouses stand at Cape Henry, guardians to the gateway of the Chesapeake Bay. They have been placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and have been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The original lighthouse was the first construction project authorized by the new United States under is fledgling Constitution. Build of stone by John McComb Jr. it was completed in October of 1792.

The second Cape Henry Lighthouse was completed in 1881 and sits approximately 350 feet from the first lighthouse. This lighthouse, painted black and white, is maintained and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard, has been automated and remains in service today.

.... a study of the “old” and “new” Cape Henry Lighthouses. They are in no particular order and mostly highlight details that we haven’t seen even when we have walked right by them, and a few that most people haven’t seen at all…..

"Today, the old Cape Henry Lighthouse silently guards the entry way into the Chesapeake Bay. Standing near the spot where in 1607 Captain Newport raised a cross to offer thanks for their safe crossing of the Atlantic, the Lighthouse is opened to the public on a seasonal schedule.

The architectural integrity of the tower is representative of one of John McComb's best and most important constructions. The Light also symbolizes the first bold steps the nation's new government took to fulfill its obligations to its people. With the construction of the Cape Henry Lighthouse, the waters of the Chesapeake Bay became navigable and safe ensuring steady trade and commerce on the Virginia and Maryland coasts."

Being a Pittsburgher, with all the city steps, it was a walk in the park climbing the steps to reach the old Cape Henry Lighthouse, Virginia Beach.

Right after the ribbon cutting opening the pacific ave trail, it was put to good use.

Looking downward from the top of the iron spiral staircase, inside of the Cape Henry Lighthouse, on the grounds of Fort Story, at the entrance of the Chesapeake Estuary, part of Virginia Beach, Virginia. There are quite a few treads to the staircase, and no stops, save for one at the top. Then you have to climb a narrow ladder to get a view of the Chesapeake Bay from the former lighthouse room.

The form of the spiral stairs against the white-washed bricks reminds me of a type of molusk known as a Nautilus. It's a classic shape, one of repetition, found in very many places in nature. Think of fractals and the Mandelbrot set if you want some more examples of repeated similarity.

I didn't see this directly, but I envisioned it as I started down from the top. To get this composition, I had to stick my camera out, in-between the stairs, and compose blindly. It took a few attempts until I got was I was looking for. I wanted to include the handrail at the top of the frame. That final piece was a tad elusive, but finally included.

Human construction, taking clues from the best of nature.

The Cape Henry Lighthouse stands near the "First Landing" site of the Jamestown settlers, and was authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton. Completed in 1792, the construction of the Cape Henry Lighthouse was one of the first acts of the newly formed Federal government. The lighthouse was active use for nearly a century before being replaced by a new cast iron lighthouse still standing nearby. It is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the United States.

Today visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

A funnel cloud (generally the cause of a twister or tornado) is a funnel-shaped cloud of condensed water droplets, associated with a rotating column of wind and extending from the base of a cloud (usually a cumulonimbus or towering cumulus cloud) but not reaching the ground or a water surface. There are two Cape Henry Lighthouses located on Cape Henry in Virginia Beach, Virginia, along the southern entrance to Chesapeake Bay.

They are on Fort Story, a military installation in Virginia Beach.

The first one, built in 1792, was the first lighthouse authorized by the U.S. government

The octangular truncated lighthouse is 90 feet tall. It is built of Aquia Creek sandstone from the same source as the White House.

It was replaced in 1881 by a cast iron and wrought iron lighthouse that is 157 feet all.

The two lighthouses are just 350 feet apart.

Fort Story, Virginia - First lighthouse EVER in the USA!

This is a shot of the Cape Henry Lighthouses (the new and old lighthouse) that I took in Virginia a while back. The old lighthouse was the first lighthouse authorized by the newly organized U.S. Federal Government in 1792. The new lighthouse was built in 1881 and is located approximately 350 feet southeast of the old lighthouse. This shot was originally a film photo that I later scanned.

The Cape Henry Lighthouse is on Cape Henry, the landform marking the southern entrance to the Chesapeake Bay.

The lighthouse is located in Fort Story, a military installation in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The cast iron and wrought iron lighthouse is 157 feet (48 m) tall.

It was built in 1881, just 350 feet northeast of an earlier lighthouse.
