"...A storm in the fall or winter is the time to visit it; a light-house or a fisherman's hut the true hotel. A man may stand there and put all America behind him."

A beautiful scene in every direction

Today I went down to the Cape Cod Art Center to drop off a piece for a coming show. I had not been there for a while. This image is from my Android phone, snapped on the way out and processed hastily in Photoshop..

We are deep in spring on Cape Cod. The gentle breeze was redolent with the perfumes of the flowering trees, and the Japanese maples stirred a deep crimson against a still verdant backdrop. Birdsong filled the crisp morning air. The wisteria has grown sinewy on the posts that support the sturdy pergola; it is hard to tell which is supporting what. The sculpture in the garden was new to me. The whole experience was lovely.

Inside, the old show--with a maritime theme called “Fish & Ships”--was still hanging. The artwork was impressive, though I think the name too clever by half. Pictures for the new show, with the bland but welcoming title "Bay State Open”, leaned impatiently at the baseboards; they promised a high quality show, as well.

I am humbled by the company in which I find myself.

This was taken on 120 mm film using a Holga. The neg was scanned and this is a proof of the positive. I used the Holga and Diana cameras in years past and have negs that will eventually be scanned and giclées made available. Using these cameras and the imprecision and atmospheric character created by the plastic lenses adds to the excitement of not knowing exactly the visual outcome.

Two people, a woman sunning herself in a beach chair and a guy swimming beyond the jetty. And two gulls, one on the beach and one on a rock. Pretty soon only the gulls would be left.
