A farmer smiles joyfully at the opportunity to attend an extension session in Bangladesh. Her village of Baikunthapur, Chirirbandar, is typical of the places where CIMMYT is having an impact in improving the livelihoods of small farmers. In such rural areas, extension services are one of the few resources that farmers working for a better life have access to. By collaborating with national partners in Bangladesh to provide training sessions like these, CIMMYT is able to take the benefits of its research directly to farmers, facilitating access to and adoption of improved seed, technologies and practices that can ultimately offer farmers better livelihoods.

Demonstrating stem rust inoculation of wheat plants by injection, using spores in a water suspension made with a small amount of wetting agent, at the Njoro research station, part of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI). This method ensures that spores enter the leaves, and unlike spraying does not depend on dew formation, so can be carried out even in drier weather. However it is time consuming and labor intensive; it would not be practical for a large number of accessions, but might be used to ensure infection in inoculation rows, for example.
The demonstration was part of a two-week international training course on “Stem Rust Note Taking and Evaluation of Germplasm” hosted by KARI at Njoro from 28 September to 7 October 2009. The course was attended by scientists from over 20 countries, many of whom are collaborators with the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI). It was jointly organized by CIMMYT, the Durable Rust Resistance in Wheat Project, KARI, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
Njoro is home to an ongoing screening program, working in close partnership with CIMMYT to identify sources of resistance to the Ug99 race of stem rust. This virulent new strain of the disease, which emerged in Uganda in 1999, is already endemic in the area, making it possible to use Njoro as a testing ground for wheats from all over the world. More than 30,000 wheat lines are now being screened each year.

A participant in a weeklong seed health workshop uses a stereo microscope to examine disease symptoms on the stem of a maize seedling in CIMMYT's Seed Health Laboratory (SHL). The workshop was held during 29 November-03 December 2010 and based at CIMMYT's headquarters at El Batán, Mexico, with participants spending most of their time in the SHL.
It was attended by 11 technicians from ten Mexican states, from State Committees of Plant Health and from the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture, and Livestock Research (INIFAP). They explored various detection methods for seed borne fungi, bacteria, and viruses affecting maize and wheat, with the aim of promoting protocol consistency among Mexican seed technicians.
The workshop was the first of its kind, and due to resounding positive feedback, it is hoped that it will be continued annually.

The first meeting of the Paris Committee on Capacity-building (PCCB) was opened on
11 May 2017 by the Chair of the SBI. The meeting opened with remarks by the UNFCCC Executive Secretary.
Indigenous community members from Bethany, a village in Guyana, mark out forest concessions as part of a workshop in 2017. Insecure land rights for indigenous forest-dependent communities is a recurrent obstacle to good forest governance in Guyana. The FAO-EU FLEGT Programme has supported the Amerindian People’s Association (APA) to develop a pilot Free Prior Informed Consent (IPIC) protocol in the village of Bethany. This protocol stipulates that logging companies must obtain consent before undertaking projects within Amerindian customary land. Initiatives such as these protect customary land, territories, and natural resources, as well as protecting Amerindian culture, livelihoods, and way of life. The Programme promotes community rights-based approaches to ensure that the design and implementation of monitoring frameworks fully take into account the rights of idigenous forest dependent communities.
Since the start of Phase III in 2016, the Programme has supported 14 projects in Guyana around legislative and policy reform, institutional strengthening and capacity building, and creating VPA monitoring structures.
