NEOBALLS / ZEN MAGNETS - Neodymium Magnetic Balls (@4205) - Starcraft II's Massive Thor

 

This is my most complex and largest build to date.

 

It was designed in parts: Cockpit body, then legs, then arms, then rear guns. Then I had to redesign parts when it came time to assemble it together because of incorrect bonding assumptions and misalignment of magnet fields.

 

Experimented with x-beam coupled bonds to get the maximum lateral strength with reinforcements on the sides. This proved to be very string. Created a X-Beam using similar methods producing a very strong leg structure. It was capable of support the entire weight of the cockpit body w/o a problem. Had to redesign the leg to cockpit body mount point from the earlier concept because the bond was not completely coupled.

 

Next up were the arm/guns ... the weight was too much for the cockpit body to support so I fashioned a pair of lego-platforms for them to rest on and take the weight off of the central body.

 

Finally ... the rear guns ... these were a challenge in that their original mount point design had to be reworked also to make them fit correctly into the rear of the cockpit body. I changed the mount points on the guns to fit the space on both sides and added a few support balls to improve the mount point bonds. I was very surprised how they were balanced and supported only by two point sections to the body. The guns stayed in place for a small series of photos.

 

The design flaw was in the side bonds of the beam to the legs. The coupled field held nicely for a short amount of time and would have held if it didn't have the weight of the rear guns to support. When they were standing upright and straight, all was good. As soon as I attempted to move the platform forward (to take a video), the rear guns tilted slightly backwards and and that was the end of the leg to body support bonds ... and created the dreaded implosion.

 

The rear gun weight caused the entire central body section to rotate backwards and fall back on the rear guns ... taking the arms in the process. Perhaps I should have created a Lego-support structure for the rear guns to remove the pendulum force backwards ... but that would have created another view blocker like the side Lego-platforms obstructed the view of the legs and feet. Not sure if I can recreate it for a rotational video ... this took over a week (on/off to design and assemble).

 

Overall ... I was very happy with the result ... hope I captured enough detail to warrant some visual recognition as a Starcraft II Thor reproduction/interpretation.

The Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk was developed in responde to an Air Force request for an aircraft capable of attacking high value targets whitout being detected by enemy radar.By the 1970s,new materials and techniques allowed enginees to design an aircraft with radar-evading or "stealth" qualities.The result was the Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk,the would's first operational stealth aircraft.

 

The first Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk flew on June 18,1981,an the first Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk unit,the 4450 Tactical Group (renamed the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing in October 1989),archived initial operating capablity in October 1983.The Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk first saw combat during Operation Just Cause on December 19,1989,when two Lockheed F-117A Nighthaks from the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing attacked military targets in Panama.

 

The Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk again went into action during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in 1990-1991 when the 415th Tactical Fighter Squadron and the 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 37th Tacical Fighter Wing moved to a base in Saudi Arabia.During Operation Desert Storm,Lockheed F-117a Nighthawks flew 1,271 sorties,achiving an 80 percent mission success rate,and suffered no losses or battle damage.A totle of 59 Lockheed F-117A Nighthawks were built between 1981 and 1990.In 1989 the Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk was awarded thwe Collier Trophy,one of the most prized aeronautical awards in the world.

 

The Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk built and was specially modified for systems testing.In 1991 after its testing program was completed.It marked as it appeard during tests conducted for the Air Force Systems Command between 1981 and 1991.

 

Boeing B-52

After it became operational in 1955,the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress remamained the main long-gange heavy bomber of the U.S.Air Force during the Cold War,and continues to be an important part of the U.S.Air Force bomber force today.Nearly 750 were built before production ended in October 26,1962; 170 these were Boeing B-52D Stratofortresses.

 

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress had set numerous records in its many years of service.On January 18,1958,three Boeing B-52B Stratofortresses completed the first non-stop round-the-world flight by jet aircraft,lasting 45 hours and 19 minutes and rquired only three aerial refueling.It was also a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress that made the first airborne hydrogen bomb drop over Bikini Atoll,Island on May 21,1956.

 

In June 1965 Boeing B-52 Stratofortresses entered combat in Southeast Asia.By 1973,the had flown 126,615 combat sorties with 17 Boeing B-52 Stratofortresses lost to enemy action.

 

The Boeing B-52D Stratofortresss saw extensive action in Southeast Asia an was severely damaged by an enemy surface-to air missile on April 9,1972.In December 1972,after being repaired,it flew four addional missions over North Vietnam.

Built by the Schiffswerks Rieherst company in Hamburg, the Umbria was launched on December 30th 1911 with the name of Bahia Blanca. It was a large freighter by that time, 150 meters long, with a power capable of providing a speed of 14 knots that could carry 9,000 tons of cargo and up to 2,000 passengers. In 1912 it began operating the Hamburg-America line doing different jobs between Europe and Argentina until the outbreak of World War I, when it was based in Buenos Aires. In 1918 the ship was acquired by the Argentinian government and it was not until 1935 when the ship was taken over by the Italian government and renamed again: the Umbria. From that moment its trips were to transport troops and during the following two years carried several thousand soldiers to the Italian colonies in East Africa.

  

The loss of the Umbria

 

In May 1940, when Italy was still neutral in World War II, the Umbria was secretly loaded with 360,000 bombs between 15 kg and 100 kg, 60 boxes of detonators, building materials and three Fiat Lunga cars, carrying a total 8,600 tons of weapons towards the East Africa. The explosives had destination Massawa and Assab, Eritrea, that was Italian colony by then, and the rest of the cargo was heading different locations in Asia. Italy's entry into the war was imminent and this shipment was destined to the defense of the colonies against the Allies and to the possible expansion of its African territories.

   

On 3rd June 1940 the Umbria reached Port Said, northern Egypt, where loaded with 1,000 tons of coal and water in a movement to fool the Allies, trying to look like a harmless freighter. The port, controlled by the Royal Navy, and its authorities allowed the ship enter on the Red Sea three days after arrival. The British delayed the departure of the Umbria knowing that Italy's entry into the war was imminent and that the cargo of Umbria had devastating power that sooner or later would be used against the Allies and why not, to get a great load to fight fascism. But Italy, as a neutral country that it was, had every right to transport weapons much like any other cargo to its colonies.

   

Having met the deadline to be retained, the Umbria crossed the Suez Canal on June 6th but with the escort of the HMS Grimsby. The importance and destructive capacity of the cargo required it. Three days later the Umbria entered in Sudan waters and the HMS Grimsby ordered the Umbria captain to anchor on Wingate Reef under the pretext of searching for contraband. Moments later the British warship HMS Leander arrived with a group of 20 sailors who boarded the Umbria. After thoroughly searching the ship and finding nothing, the captain ordered the British troops to remain the night aboard the Umbria.

The next morning Lorenzo Muiesan, Umbria captain, was in his cabin listening to the radio when Mussolini announced the entry of Italy into the World War II. Hostilities would begin at midnight of that day. Muiesan, a very patriotic captain with long experience, was the only one in the area who had heard the news and knew immediately that both Umbria and the burden would be used by the Allies against their own country. He had no option to disable both. In a move of extraordinary intelligence, as the hours passed retained by the British who did not yet know that Italy was officially the enemy, the captain ordered his crew conducting a rescue simulation... that was more real than the British thought. This maneuver, which the English soldiers agreed as they believed it would serve to further delay the departure of the Umbria. While the Italians occupied the lifeboats, the chief engineers, following Muiesan´s orders, opened all the valves and drown the ship to the bottom of the reef. With the crew safe, the British only had time to get on their ship and watch the freighter slid slowly.

When the captain of HMS Grimsby asked why he had done that Muiesan confirmed the declaration of war from Italy to Britain. The next day Muiesan and the rest of Umbria crew departed detainees to India, where they spent four years in prison.

  

CARGO:

The Umbria was carrying 360,000 individual aircraft bombs ranging in size from 15, 50 and 100 kg. The vessel also carried a large quantity of fuses, ammunition and detonators as well as other traditional cargo. The captain knew these bombs would be confiscated and used by the enemy against his country should they ever discover them which was why he made the call to sink the ship.

The Umbria had sailed in June 1940 with 6,000 tons of bombs, 60 boxes detonators, explosives, weapons and three Fiat 1100 Lunga from Genoa via Livorno and Naples in the Suez Canal and on the way via Massaua and Assab to Calcutta.

Aeroscopia est un musée aéronautique français implanté à Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), près du site AéroConstellation, et accueille notamment deux exemplaires du Concorde, dont l'ouverture a eu lieu le 14 janvier 2015

 

Le tarmac Sud du musée n'est capable d'accueillir que trois gros appareils. L'installation des appareils fut définitivement terminée après que le premier prototype de l'A400M-180 y fut arrivé le 16 juillet 2015, en dépit de la possibilité de 360 000 euros de TVA.

La réalisation en 2019 du nouveau tarmac au Nord du musée permet l'accueil d'appareils supplémentaires issus des entreprises locales Airbus et ATR. Le transfert des avions entre le site Airbus "Lagardère" et le musée a lieu sur une semaine, à raison d'un appareil par jour :

Concorde, F-WTSB, MSN201 (ANAE), il s'agit d'un appareil de présérie qui a servi entre autres à transporter plusieurs présidents de la République française.

Airbus A300B4-203, F-WUAB, MSN238 (Airbus Heritage), décoré aux couleurs du prototype, au lieu de MSN001 démantelé. L'intérieur est visitable. Dans la première section des vitrages transparents permettent de voir la structure et les systèmes de l'avion, tandis que dans les sections suivantes sont représentés des aménagements de première classe et VIP.

Super Guppy de l'association Ailes Anciennes Toulouse, l'appareil qui servait au transport des tronçons d'Airbus est exposé porte ouverte, et une passerelle permet l'accès à la soute où un film est projeté. L'ouverture n'a pas été une mince affaire, l'appareil n'ayant pas été ouvert pendant 15 ans. L'aide des anciens mécaniciens de l'avion a été primordiale pour permettre une ouverture en toute sécurité.

Aeroscopia is a French aeronautical museum located in Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), near the AéroConstellation site, and notably hosts two copies of the Concorde, which opened on January 14, 2015

 

The south tarmac of the museum can only accommodate three large aircraft. The installation of the devices was definitively finished after the first prototype of the A400M-180 arrived there on July 16, 2015, despite the possibility of 360,000 euros in VAT.

The construction in 2019 of the new tarmac north of the museum will accommodate additional aircraft from local Airbus and ATR companies. The transfer of planes between the Airbus "Lagardère" site and the museum takes place over a week, at the rate of one aircraft per day:

Concorde, F-WTSB, MSN201 (ANAE), this is a pre-production aircraft which was used, among other things, to transport several presidents of the French Republic.

Airbus A300B4-203, F-WUAB, MSN238 (Airbus Heritage), decorated in the colors of the prototype, instead of dismantled MSN001. The interior can be visited. In the first section transparent glazing allows to see the structure and systems of the aircraft, while in the following sections are shown first class and VIP fittings.

Super Guppy from the Ailes Anciennes Toulouse association, the aircraft which was used to transport the Airbus sections is on display with the door open, and a gangway allows access to the hold where a film is shown. Opening was no small feat, as the device has not been opened for 15 years. The help of the former mechanics of the aircraft was essential to allow a safe opening.

SCAMP is an extremely capable small boat; at 11 feet 11 inches in length. The boat was designed by well-known New Zealand designer John Welsford for the magazine Small Craft Advisor, hence its name - Small Craft Advisor Magazine Project, or SCAMP. www.smallcraftadvisor magazine.com

 

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding (www.nwboatschool.org) hosted the third SCAMP Camp (sm) March 4th - 15th, 2013 at the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend WA. www.nwmaritime.org/

 

The next SCAMP Camp is scheduled in the same location August 5th - 16th, 2013; check the School's website for details. We'll announce 2014 SCAMP Camp dates later this spring.

 

This SCAMP Camp (sm) is taught by well-known small boat adventurer Howard Rice. SCAMP's designer, New Zealander John Welsford, will help to teach the August 2013 SCAMP Camp (sm).

 

During the March class, 6 SCAMPs are being built from CAD kits cut by Turnpoint Design of Port Townsend during the March 2013 workshop, and a total of ten students participated in the class. Students came from as far away as Germany and from Vermont, Montana, Oregon and other locations across the US to attend the class.

Our mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts. We build both commissioned and speculative boats for sale while teaching students boatbuilding the skills they need to work in the marine trades.

Dans la première section des vitrages transparents permettent de voir la structure et les systèmes de l'avion, tandis que dans les sections suivantes sont représentés des aménagements de première classe et VIP.

Super Guppy de l'association Ailes Anciennes Toulouse, l'appareil qui servait au transport des tronçons d'Airbus est exposé porte ouverte, et une passerelle permet l'accès à la soute où un film est projeté. L'ouverture n'a pas été une mince affaire, l'appareil n'ayant pas été ouvert pendant 15 ans. L'aide des anciens mécaniciens de l'avion a été primordiale pour permettre une ouverture en toute sécurité.

Aeroscopia is a French aeronautical museum located in Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), near the AéroConstellation site, and notably hosts two copies of the Concorde, which opened on January 14, 2015

 

The south tarmac of the museum can only accommodate three large aircraft. The installation of the devices was definitively finished after the first prototype of the A400M-180 arrived there on July 16, 2015, despite the possibility of 360,000 euros in VAT.

The construction in 2019 of the new tarmac north of the museum will accommodate additional aircraft from local Airbus and ATR companies. The transfer of planes between the Airbus "Lagardère" site and the museum takes place over a week, at the rate of one aircraft per day:

Airbus A300B4-203, F-WUAB, MSN238 (Airbus Heritage), decorated in the colors of the prototype, instead of dismantled MSN001. The interior can be visited. In the first section transparent glazing allows to see the structure and systems of the aircraft, while in the following sections are shown first class and VIP fittings.

Super Guppy from the Ailes Anciennes Toulouse association, the aircraft which was used to transport the Airbus sections is on display with the door open, and a gangway allows access to the hold where a film is shown. Opening was no small feat, as the device has not been opened for 15 years. The help of the former mechanics of the aircraft was essential to allow a safe opening.

Friend of mine gave me this aging but still capable machine after the hard drive died. I put in one of my own spares, reinstalled Windows XP, all updates through SP3, installed Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus, and it's ready for a new home. Can it be used to play games? No (unless Minesweeper & Solitaire count). Is it current technology? No. Can it be used for basic tasks and web surfing? Absolutely yes, ALL DAY LONG. Would be perfect for someone with an old clunker PC but no $ to upgrade. I have no keyboard, mouse, or anything else, just the tower. Interested? Inbox me...

In 1935, the Imperial Japanese Navy issued a requirement for a monoplane carrier-based torpedo bomber that would also be capable of carrying bombs. Nakajima won the contract with its B5N design, which first flew in 1937. The prototype was considered slightly too complicated for carrier operations of the time, and it was simplified for production as the B5N1.

 

The B5N immediately won over crews, who liked its easy handling and steady performance, which made it both a superb torpedo bomber and level bomber. Speed was not considered a factor, as torpedo bombers were usually slow--torpedoes could not be dropped at high speed--and would require fighter escort in any case. A single .30 caliber machine gun was provided for self-defense. However, experience over China showed that the B5N was helpless against even the second-rate fighters used by the Chinese Air Force: like many Japanese aircraft, sacrificing weight for range left the B5N without armor or self-sealing fuel tanks. One or two hits would destroy the aircraft. Unfortunately for the Japanese, adding armor would reduce the aircraft's already slow speed even further, not to mention its range--and Japanese carrier doctrine emphasized hitting the enemy beyond the range of enemy counterattacks. The best Nakajima could do was to upgrade the engine in the B5N2, to make it somewhat faster.

 

Though considered obsolete by December 1941, the B5N2 was still the backbone of the IJN's Carrier Striking Force. For the Pearl Harbor attack, B5Ns were equipped with torpedoes in the first wave and a mix of torpedoes and bombs in the second. The aircraft would do the most damage of any Japanese aircraft in the attack: armed with the best torpedoes in the world--the Type 91 Long Lance--B5Ns sank the USS Oklahoma and severely damaged the California, West Virginia and Nevada. The Arizona may have been sunk by a B5N using armor-piercing bombs in the level bombing role, though the loss was also attributed to Aichi D3A dive bombers.

 

For the next two years, B5Ns--codenamed "Kate" by the Allies--would wreak havoc on Allied ships, contributing to the loss of no less than three American carriers and several other vessels. However, as the US Navy began to field more effective fighters and antiaircraft guns, the B5N began to suffer heavy casualties--it could not escape or defend itself against fighters, and now its escorting Mitsubishi A6M Zeroes were shot down as well. Ironically, the B5N's ability to carry torpedoes or bombs may have contributed to the Japanese loss at Midway, as Admiral Chuichi Nagumo kept delaying attacks while he considered one ordnance load or another, with lethal results for the Carrier Striking Force.

 

The IJN recognized the B5N's vulnerability and were already working on a replacement by 1942--the B6N Tenzan, codenamed "Jill"--but the B6N was delayed due to engine problems, and then by US bombing. The B6N never replaced the B5N; though the latter was relegated to antisubmarine duties in 1944, it was brought back in its original role from land bases, and as a kamikaze.

 

The heavy casualties taken by B5N crews during the war ensured that few of the 1268 produced survived to the end; those that did were scrapped. Today, no complete B5N survives, though some have been reconstructed from wrecks to partial aircraft.

 

When I began teaching my World War II class, Dad began building models for it. He had wanted to build a B5N for awhile in any case. This is the Hasegawa 1/72 scale B5N2. Dad intended this to be in the colors of Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the attack on Pearl Harbor; Fuchida's aircraft carried distinctive red and yellow formation markings on the tail, but Dad had not finished decaling the model before he passed away in October 2013. Unlike many IJN aircraft, Fuchida's aircraft had dark green uppersurfaces over the standard light gray underside. The single red stripe on the fuselage indicates an aircraft from the carrier Akagi.

This image is a picture of majestic-looking Bailey and a capable young handler, who is riding bareback in this shot. To use Nancy's (Bailey's owner) own words, "This picture... captures all there is between that young woman and her horse." Bailey is a sweet, gentle and lovable and loving horse. Although she is a large and strong, her owner once told me that she is somewhat small for her Percheron breed. Percherons are a breed of draft horse. Well muscled and known for their intelligence and willingness to work, they were originally bred for use during wars because of their size and strength.

 

Nancy had asked me to take some pictures of Bailey. In this shot, a ripening soybean field with yellowing leaves and the Walt's horse barn form a backdrop. Nancy had dolled up Bailey for the photo shoot--and I shot over 1,000 pictures. I found the experience to be challenging but definitely fun. Landscapes don't tend to move as much as a horse does. :D

March Field Air Museum

 

Designed in the early years of the Cold War, the massive eight-engine Boeing B-52 Stratofortress with its crew of six was intended as a high-altitude, intercontinental, strategic bomber capable of launching devastating nuclear attacks against targets deep inside the Soviet Union. Throughout the Cold War, B-52s served as the third element of the United States nuclear triad defense consisting of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles and strategic bombers. Yet, B-52’s have never dropped a nuclear weapon in anger.

 

Relying on speed and electronic counter-measures systems for its primary defense, the aircraft is the last bomber in U.S. history to use an air gunner (gun turret in the tail). The internal bomb bay was designed to carry up to 27,000 pounds of nuclear weapons. Modifications increased this capacity to over 40,000 pounds, wing-pylons carry an additional 18,000 pounds of bombs or missiles. The four top deck crew members, pilot, co-pilot, electronic counter measures and gunner eject upward. The navigator and bombardier eject downward from the lower level, making for uncomfortable ejections at low altitudes. 700-gallon wing tanks require wing-tip trailing wheels on landing and take-off. The droopy wings level off on take-off and move up to 15 feet as speed increases to over 500 mph. The four twin landing gear “trucks” can be turned to "crab" the aircraft in a crosswind landing. The B-52’s engines have no thrust reversers, so a very long runway, and a drag chute, is needed to help stop the aircraft on landing. With an 8,800-mile basic range the addition of air-to-air refueling makes the Stratofortress a truly global aircraft.

 

Undergoing continuous modification since it first entered service in 1955, improvements in low-level operations, conventional bombing, range and defensive and offensive systems have allowed the Stratofortress to play an important role in conflicts around the world. From the sweltering jungles of Southeast Asia to the arid wastelands of Iraq, from the dense forests of Yugoslavia to the rocky precipices of the Hindu Kush the 70,000-pound bomb load of the B-52 has supported generations of American fighting men as a tactical bomber directly targeting enemy formations and supply routes.

 

Today, the longest-lived front-line bomber in aviation history, a total of 744 B-52s were produced by Boeing at its Seattle, Washington and Wichita, Kansas plants before aircraft production ceased in 1962. Today, 76 B-52H models are still in-service with the Air Force expecting them to continue until 2040.

 

The museum's B-52D, serial number 55-0679, was manufactured by Boeing Aircraft, Wichita, Kansas and delivered to the Air Force on June 5, 1957. During the Vietnam Conflict, it flew 175 combat missions in 41 months from November 1966 to October 1973. In 1975, it was involved in a ground mishap at March AFB that resulted in a broken wing spar permanently grounding the aircraft. 55-0679 last served as a weapons loading trainer before it was declared surplus and assigned to the museum. This aircraft is on loan from the NMUSAF

LANDOVER, Md. -- Kirk Cousins still has thrown for more interceptions than touchdown passes in the NFL. And it's going to take some work to get his 4-9 record as a starter above the .500 mark.

 

At least the earnest, soft-spoken, fourth-year quarterback for the Washington Redskins now has a signature victory, thanks to a fourth-quarter comeback and a zero-turnover performance.

 

Cousins capped a 90-yard drive with a go-ahead, 4-yard TD toss to Pierre Garcon with 26 seconds left Sunday, lifting the Redskins past the Philadelphia Eagles 23-20 on Sunday.

 

"That final drive -- I wasn't capable of doing that when I came in the league as a rookie. It takes time. It takes failure. It takes learning from experiences," said Cousins, who earned the starting QB job ahead of 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III in preseason. "A culmination of, I guess it would be, three-plus seasons' worth of work got me to a point where I was able to make the necessary plays on that drive."

 

Sam Bradford threw three second-half touchdown passes for the Eagles (1-3), who trailed 13-0 at halftime. Their new kicker, Caleb Sturgis, missed an extra-point attempt and a 33-yard field-goal try -- four big points in what turned out to be a three-point, back-and-forth game.

 

"It's tough knowing I didn't do my part," said Sturgis, signed last week to replace the injured Cody Parkey.

 

Starting at its own 10 with a little more than six minutes remaining, Washington (2-2) used a balance of runs -- five for 41 yards -- and passes -- Cousins went 6 for 10 for 44 yards -- to work its way down the field to take the lead for good.

"A lot of dinking and dunking and shallow crosses and running game," Eagles defensive coordinator Bill Davis said.

Cousins' last three completions went to Garcon, for a total of 32 yards.

 

"He is one of the greatest competitors on this football team," coach Jay Gruden said about Garcon, "and people feed off of that."

 

On the winning score, the Eagles sent a blitz at Cousins, but he put the football in a tight window, and Garcon did the rest.

"I felt hits from all over, from everybody," said Garcon, who played the closing minutes despite what Washington said was a sprained knee. "I looked and I was glad I was on the other side of the (goal) line, instead of, you know, a yard short."

Cousins finished 31 for 46 for 290 yards, the one TD -- and, most importantly for a guy with a pair of two-interception games already this season, no turnovers. He did fumble a snap in the first half at Philadelphia's 1, but recovered it and plunged forward for a touchdown, with the help of a push from running back Matt Jones.

 

It was the first rushing TD allowed by Philadelphia this season.

Bradford was 15 for 28 for 270 yards, with touchdown passes of 62, 39 and 10 yards. He entered the game with three TD tosses all season and hadn't completed a pass of at least 40 yards until one that went for 45 to Nelson Agholor in the second quarter. Symbolic of the way things are going for coach Chip Kelly's much-ballyhooed system this season, though, Agholor couldn't handle a pitch from Ryan Mathews on a reverse on the very next play, resulting in a fumble.

 

DeMarco Murray, who missed last week's victory over the Jets with a leg injury, gained 36 yards on eight carries. He voiced disappointment with the way he's being used by Kelly.

After leading the NFL in rushing last season for Dallas, Murray joined Philadelphia as a free agent, and has 47 yards on 29 carries so far.

 

Asked if he's getting the ball enough, Murray replied: "No, I'm not. I don't think I am. But it's how the plays are being called. I love this offense, I love playing with these guys. It's just how it is."

Built by the Schiffswerks Rieherst company in Hamburg, the Umbria was launched on December 30th 1911 with the name of Bahia Blanca. It was a large freighter by that time, 150 meters long, with a power capable of providing a speed of 14 knots that could carry 9,000 tons of cargo and up to 2,000 passengers. In 1912 it began operating the Hamburg-America line doing different jobs between Europe and Argentina until the outbreak of World War I, when it was based in Buenos Aires. In 1918 the ship was acquired by the Argentinian government and it was not until 1935 when the ship was taken over by the Italian government and renamed again: the Umbria. From that moment its trips were to transport troops and during the following two years carried several thousand soldiers to the Italian colonies in East Africa.

  

The loss of the Umbria

 

In May 1940, when Italy was still neutral in World War II, the Umbria was secretly loaded with 360,000 bombs between 15 kg and 100 kg, 60 boxes of detonators, building materials and three Fiat Lunga cars, carrying a total 8,600 tons of weapons towards the East Africa. The explosives had destination Massawa and Assab, Eritrea, that was Italian colony by then, and the rest of the cargo was heading different locations in Asia. Italy's entry into the war was imminent and this shipment was destined to the defense of the colonies against the Allies and to the possible expansion of its African territories.

   

On 3rd June 1940 the Umbria reached Port Said, northern Egypt, where loaded with 1,000 tons of coal and water in a movement to fool the Allies, trying to look like a harmless freighter. The port, controlled by the Royal Navy, and its authorities allowed the ship enter on the Red Sea three days after arrival. The British delayed the departure of the Umbria knowing that Italy's entry into the war was imminent and that the cargo of Umbria had devastating power that sooner or later would be used against the Allies and why not, to get a great load to fight fascism. But Italy, as a neutral country that it was, had every right to transport weapons much like any other cargo to its colonies.

   

Having met the deadline to be retained, the Umbria crossed the Suez Canal on June 6th but with the escort of the HMS Grimsby. The importance and destructive capacity of the cargo required it. Three days later the Umbria entered in Sudan waters and the HMS Grimsby ordered the Umbria captain to anchor on Wingate Reef under the pretext of searching for contraband. Moments later the British warship HMS Leander arrived with a group of 20 sailors who boarded the Umbria. After thoroughly searching the ship and finding nothing, the captain ordered the British troops to remain the night aboard the Umbria.

The next morning Lorenzo Muiesan, Umbria captain, was in his cabin listening to the radio when Mussolini announced the entry of Italy into the World War II. Hostilities would begin at midnight of that day. Muiesan, a very patriotic captain with long experience, was the only one in the area who had heard the news and knew immediately that both Umbria and the burden would be used by the Allies against their own country. He had no option to disable both. In a move of extraordinary intelligence, as the hours passed retained by the British who did not yet know that Italy was officially the enemy, the captain ordered his crew conducting a rescue simulation... that was more real than the British thought. This maneuver, which the English soldiers agreed as they believed it would serve to further delay the departure of the Umbria. While the Italians occupied the lifeboats, the chief engineers, following Muiesan´s orders, opened all the valves and drown the ship to the bottom of the reef. With the crew safe, the British only had time to get on their ship and watch the freighter slid slowly.

When the captain of HMS Grimsby asked why he had done that Muiesan confirmed the declaration of war from Italy to Britain. The next day Muiesan and the rest of Umbria crew departed detainees to India, where they spent four years in prison.

  

CARGO:

The Umbria was carrying 360,000 individual aircraft bombs ranging in size from 15, 50 and 100 kg. The vessel also carried a large quantity of fuses, ammunition and detonators as well as other traditional cargo. The captain knew these bombs would be confiscated and used by the enemy against his country should they ever discover them which was why he made the call to sink the ship.

The Umbria had sailed in June 1940 with 6,000 tons of bombs, 60 boxes detonators, explosives, weapons and three Fiat 1100 Lunga from Genoa via Livorno and Naples in the Suez Canal and on the way via Massaua and Assab to Calcutta.

Aeroscopia is a French aeronautical museum located in Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), near the AéroConstellation site, and notably hosts two copies of the Concorde, which opened on January 14, 2015

 

The south tarmac of the museum can only accommodate three large aircraft. The installation of the devices was definitively finished after the first prototype of the A400M-180 arrived there on July 16, 2015, despite the possibility of 360,000 euros in VAT.

The construction in 2019 of the new tarmac north of the museum will accommodate additional aircraft from local Airbus and ATR companies. The transfer of planes between the Airbus "Lagardère" site and the museum takes place over a week, at the rate of one aircraft per day:

Concorde, F-WTSB, MSN201 (ANAE), this is a pre-production aircraft which was used, among other things, to transport several presidents of the French Republic.

In the first section transparent glazing allows to see the structure and systems of the aircraft, while in the following sections are shown first class and VIP fittings.

Super Guppy from the Ailes Anciennes Toulouse association, the aircraft which was used to transport the Airbus sections is on display with the door open, and a gangway allows access to the hold where a film is shown. Opening was no small feat, as the device has not been opened for 15 years. The help of the former mechanics of the aircraft was essential to allow a safe opening.

The Shipley Art Gallery is an art gallery in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England, located at the south end of Prince Consort Road. It has a Designated Collection of national importance.

 

Origins

The Shipley Art Gallery opened to the public in 1917. This was made possible by a bequest from wealthy local solicitor and art collector, Joseph Ainsley Davidson Shipley (1822–1909).

 

Shipley was a rather enigmatic person about whom little is known. He was born in Gateshead, near High Street. He was a solicitor in the Newcastle firm of Hoyle, Shipley and Hoyle. From 1884 until his death, he leased Saltwell Park House, now known as Saltwell Towers. Shipley's main passion was art and collecting paintings. He bought his first painting when he was sixteen and by the time he died he had amassed a collection of some 2,500 paintings.

 

On his death, Shipley left £30,000 and all his pictures to the City of Newcastle, which was to build a new gallery to house the collection. This was to be known as "The Shipley Bequest". Current belief within local history circles is that Shipley’s will expressly banned Newcastle’s art gallery as a recipient of the bequest, but this assertion must be dismissed: since the foundation stone of the Laing Art Gallery was laid only in August 1901 and the gallery opened in October 1904, the institution did not yet exist in 1900, when Shipley’s will was compiled. Shipley’s will did, in fact, declare that ‘the Art Gallery to be erected in Higham Place will not be and shall not be regarded as an Art Gallery within this trust’, owing to its being ‘too small’, but he conceded that if it ‘shall be capable of being enlarged so as to render it capable of holding all, then I direct my Trustees to raise the sum of £30,000 out of my residuary estate and pay the same to the treasurer of the gallery to be applied in or toward such enlargement as aforesaid’. It was only following a lengthy process that Gateshead Municipal Council was offered the collection. As it was impossible to house all of the paintings, 359 of the pictures recommended by the executors of Shipley's will were selected. A further group was then added by the Gateshead Committee, bringing the total to 504.

 

In 1914, after the sale of the remaining paintings, work began on the new art gallery. The building, which was designed by Arthur Stockwell, M.S.A. of Newcastle, opened on 29 November 1917. The stone entrance portico is distyle in antis – four Corinthian-style stone columns flanked by solid pilasters. These are surmounted by two sculptured figures, one representing the Arts and the other Industry and Learning, by W. Birnie Rhind, RSA. of Edinburgh.

 

Pevsner described the art gallery as a "bold arrangement of a brick central block and lower wings containing galleries". The building was designated as Grade II listed in 1982.

 

Present gallery

The original 504 paintings represented all the main European schools from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Since 1917, the collection has been added to, and now comprises some 10,000 items.

 

The gallery holds a strong collection of 16th and 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings, as well as 19th century British works, watercolours, prints, drawings and sculpture. Also featured are items of local interest, which include the popular painting by William C. Irving ((1866–1943) of "Blaydon Races" (1903) and a 1970 street scene of Redheugh Crossroads by Gateshead-born Charlie Rogers.

 

Since 1977 the gallery has become established as a national centre for contemporary craftwork. It has built up one of the best collections outside London, which includes ceramics, wood, metal, glass, textiles and furniture. The Shipley is home to the Henry Rothschild collection of studio ceramics. In 2008, the Shipley opened its Designs for Life gallery which showcases the gallery's collections of contemporary craft and design. The Gallery also hosts a varied programme of temporary exhibitions and has a strong partnership with the V&A Museum in London.

 

The Shipley Art Gallery is managed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums on behalf of Gateshead Council.

 

Gateshead is a town in the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough of Tyne and Wear, England. It is on the River Tyne's southern bank. The town's attractions include the twenty metre tall Angel of the North sculpture on the town's southern outskirts, The Glasshouse International Centre for Music and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The town shares the Millennium Bridge, Tyne Bridge and multiple other bridges with Newcastle upon Tyne.

 

Historically part of County Durham, under the Local Government Act 1888 the town was made a county borough, meaning it was administered independently of the county council.

 

In the 2011 Census, the town had a population of 120,046 while the wider borough had 200,214.

 

History

Gateshead is first mentioned in Latin translation in Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People as ad caput caprae ("at the goat's head"). This interpretation is consistent with the later English attestations of the name, among them Gatesheued (c. 1190), literally "goat's head" but in the context of a place-name meaning 'headland or hill frequented by (wild) goats'. Although other derivations have been mooted, it is this that is given by the standard authorities.

 

A Brittonic predecessor, named with the element *gabro-, 'goat' (c.f. Welsh gafr), may underlie the name. Gateshead might have been the Roman-British fort of Gabrosentum.

 

Early

There has been a settlement on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne, around the old river crossing where the Swing Bridge now stands, since Roman times.

 

The first recorded mention of Gateshead is in the writings of the Venerable Bede who referred to an Abbot of Gateshead called Utta in 623. In 1068 William the Conqueror defeated the forces of Edgar the Ætheling and Malcolm king of Scotland (Shakespeare's Malcolm) on Gateshead Fell (now Low Fell and Sheriff Hill).

 

During medieval times Gateshead was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Durham. At this time the area was largely forest with some agricultural land. The forest was the subject of Gateshead's first charter, granted in the 12th century by Hugh du Puiset, Bishop of Durham. An alternative spelling may be "Gatishevede", as seen in a legal record, dated 1430.

 

Industrial revolution

Throughout the Industrial Revolution the population of Gateshead expanded rapidly; between 1801 and 1901 the increase was over 100,000. This expansion resulted in the spread southwards of the town.

 

In 1854, a catastrophic explosion on the quayside destroyed most of Gateshead's medieval heritage, and caused widespread damage on the Newcastle side of the river.

 

Sir Joseph Swan lived at Underhill, Low Fell, Gateshead from 1869 to 1883, where his experiments led to the invention of the electric light bulb. The house was the first in the world to be wired for domestic electric light.

 

In the 1889 one of the largest employers (Hawks, Crawshay and Company) closed down and unemployment has since been a burden. Up to the Second World War there were repeated newspaper reports of the unemployed sending deputations to the council to provide work. The depression years of the 1920s and 1930s created even more joblessness and the Team Valley Trading Estate was built in the mid-1930s to alleviate the situation.

 

Regeneration

In the late noughties, Gateshead Council started to regenerate the town, with the long-term aim of making Gateshead a city. The most extensive transformation occurred in the Quayside, with almost all the structures there being constructed or refurbished in this time.

 

In the early 2010s, regeneration refocused on the town centre. The £150 million Trinity Square development opened in May 2013, it incorporates student accommodation, a cinema, health centre and shops. It was nominated for the Carbuncle Cup in September 2014. The cup was however awarded to another development which involved Tesco, Woolwich Central.

 

Governance

In 1835, Gateshead was established as a municipal borough and in 1889 it was made a county borough, independent from Durham County Council.

 

In 1870, the Old Town Hall was built, designed by John Johnstone who also designed the previously built Newcastle Town Hall. The ornamental clock in front of the old town hall was presented to Gateshead in 1892 by the mayor, Walter de Lancey Willson, on the occasion of him being elected for a third time. He was also one of the founders of Walter Willson's, a chain of grocers in the North East and Cumbria. The old town hall also served as a magistrate's court and one of Gateshead's police stations.

 

Current

In 1974, following the Local Government Act 1972, the County Borough of Gateshead was merged with the urban districts of Felling, Whickham, Blaydon and Ryton and part of the rural district of Chester-le-Street to create the much larger Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead.

 

Geography

The town of Gateshead is in the North East of England in the ceremonial county of Tyne and Wear, and within the historic boundaries of County Durham. It is located on the southern bank of the River Tyne at a latitude of 54.57° N and a longitude of 1.35° W. Gateshead experiences a temperate climate which is considerably warmer than some other locations at similar latitudes as a result of the warming influence of the Gulf Stream (via the North Atlantic drift). It is located in the rain shadow of the North Pennines and is therefore in one of the driest regions of the United Kingdom.

 

One of the most distinguishing features of Gateshead is its topography. The land rises 230 feet from Gateshead Quays to the town centre and continues rising to a height of 525 feet at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Sheriff Hill. This is in contrast to the flat and low lying Team Valley located on the western edges of town. The high elevations allow for impressive views over the Tyne valley into Newcastle and across Tyneside to Sunderland and the North Sea from lookouts in Windmill Hills and Windy Nook respectively.

 

The Office for National Statistics defines the town as an urban sub-division. The latest (2011) ONS urban sub-division of Gateshead contains the historical County Borough together with areas that the town has absorbed, including Dunston, Felling, Heworth, Pelaw and Bill Quay.

 

Given the proximity of Gateshead to Newcastle, just south of the River Tyne from the city centre, it is sometimes incorrectly referred to as being a part of Newcastle. Gateshead Council and Newcastle City Council teamed up in 2000 to create a unified marketing brand name, NewcastleGateshead, to better promote the whole of the Tyneside conurbation.

 

Economy

Gateshead is home to the MetroCentre, the largest shopping mall in the UK until 2008; and the Team Valley Trading Estate, once the largest and still one of the larger purpose-built commercial estates in the UK.

 

Arts

The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art has been established in a converted flour mill. The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, previously The Sage, a Norman Foster-designed venue for music and the performing arts opened on 17 December 2004. Gateshead also hosted the Gateshead Garden Festival in 1990, rejuvenating 200 acres (0.81 km2) of derelict land (now mostly replaced with housing). The Angel of the North, a famous sculpture in nearby Lamesley, is visible from the A1 to the south of Gateshead, as well as from the East Coast Main Line. Other public art include works by Richard Deacon, Colin Rose, Sally Matthews, Andy Goldsworthy, Gordon Young and Michael Winstone.

 

Traditional and former

The earliest recorded coal mining in the Gateshead area is dated to 1344. As trade on the Tyne prospered there were several attempts by the burghers of Newcastle to annex Gateshead. In 1576 a small group of Newcastle merchants acquired the 'Grand Lease' of the manors of Gateshead and Whickham. In the hundred years from 1574 coal shipments from Newcastle increased elevenfold while the population of Gateshead doubled to approximately 5,500. However, the lease and the abundant coal supplies ended in 1680. The pits were shallow as problems of ventilation and flooding defeated attempts to mine coal from the deeper seams.

 

'William Cotesworth (1668-1726) was a prominent merchant based in Gateshead, where he was a leader in coal and international trade. Cotesworth began as the son of a yeoman and apprentice to a tallow - candler. He ended as an esquire, having been mayor, Justice of the Peace and sheriff of Northumberland. He collected tallow from all over England and sold it across the globe. He imported dyes from the Indies, as well as flax, wine, and grain. He sold tea, sugar, chocolate, and tobacco. He operated the largest coal mines in the area, and was a leading salt producer. As the government's principal agent in the North country, he was in contact with leading ministers.

 

William Hawks originally a blacksmith, started business in Gateshead in 1747, working with the iron brought to the Tyne as ballast by the Tyne colliers. Hawks and Co. eventually became one of the biggest iron businesses in the North, producing anchors, chains and so on to meet a growing demand. There was keen contemporary rivalry between 'Hawks' Blacks' and 'Crowley's Crew'. The famous 'Hawks' men' including Ned White, went on to be celebrated in Geordie song and story.

 

In 1831 a locomotive works was established by the Newcastle and Darlington Railway, later part of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway. In 1854 the works moved to the Greenesfield site and became the manufacturing headquarters of North Eastern Railway. In 1909, locomotive construction was moved to Darlington and the rest of the works were closed in 1932.

 

Robert Stirling Newall took out a patent on the manufacture of wire ropes in 1840 and in partnership with Messrs. Liddell and Gordon, set up his headquarters at Gateshead. A worldwide industry of wire-drawing resulted. The submarine telegraph cable received its definitive form through Newall's initiative, involving the use of gutta-percha surrounded by strong wires. The first successful Dover–Calais cable on 25 September 1851, was made in Newall's works. In 1853, he invented the brake-drum and cone for laying cable in deep seas. Half of the first Atlantic cable was manufactured in Gateshead. Newall was interested in astronomy, and his giant 25-inch (640 mm) telescope was set up in the garden at Ferndene, his Gateshead residence, in 1871.

 

Architecture

JB Priestley, writing of Gateshead in his 1934 travelogue English Journey, said that "no true civilisation could have produced such a town", adding that it appeared to have been designed "by an enemy of the human race".

 

Victorian

William Wailes the celebrated stained-glass maker, lived at South Dene from 1853 to 1860. In 1860, he designed Saltwell Towers as a fairy-tale palace for himself. It is an imposing Victorian mansion in its own park with a romantic skyline of turrets and battlements. It was originally furnished sumptuously by Gerrard Robinson. Some of the panelling installed by Robinson was later moved to the Shipley Art gallery. Wailes sold Saltwell Towers to the corporation in 1876 for use as a public park, provided he could use the house for the rest of his life. For many years the structure was essentially an empty shell but following a restoration programme it was reopened to the public in 2004.

 

Post millennium

The council sponsored the development of a Gateshead Quays cultural quarter. The development includes the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, erected in 2001, which won the prestigious Stirling Prize for Architecture in 2002.

 

Former brutalism

The brutalist Trinity Centre Car Park, which was designed by Owen Luder, dominated the town centre for many years until its demolition in 2010. A product of attempts to regenerate the area in the 1960s, the car park gained an iconic status due to its appearance in the 1971 film Get Carter, starring Michael Caine. An unsuccessful campaign to have the structure listed was backed by Sylvester Stallone, who played the main role in the 2000 remake of the film. The car park was scheduled for demolition in 2009, but this was delayed as a result of a disagreement between Tesco, who re-developed the site, and Gateshead Council. The council had not been given firm assurances that Tesco would build the previously envisioned town centre development which was to include a Tesco mega-store as well as shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, offices and student accommodation. The council effectively used the car park as a bargaining tool to ensure that the company adhered to the original proposals and blocked its demolition until they submitted a suitable planning application. Demolition finally took place in July–August 2010.

 

The Derwent Tower, another well known example of brutalist architecture, was also designed by Owen Luder and stood in the neighbourhood of Dunston. Like the Trinity Car Park it also failed in its bid to become a listed building and was demolished in 2012. Also located in this area are the Grade II listed Dunston Staithes which were built in 1890. Following the award of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of almost £420,000 restoration of the structure is expected to begin in April 2014.

 

Sport

Gateshead International Stadium regularly holds international athletics meetings over the summer months, and is home of the Gateshead Harriers athletics club. It is also host to rugby league fixtures, and the home ground of Gateshead Football Club. Gateshead Thunder Rugby League Football Club played at Gateshead International Stadium until its purchase by Newcastle Rugby Limited and the subsequent rebranding as Newcastle Thunder. Both clubs have had their problems: Gateshead A.F.C. were controversially voted out of the Football League in 1960 in favour of Peterborough United, whilst Gateshead Thunder lost their place in Super League as a result of a takeover (officially termed a merger) by Hull F.C. Both Gateshead clubs continue to ply their trade at lower levels in their respective sports, thanks mainly to the efforts of their supporters. The Gateshead Senators American Football team also use the International Stadium, as well as this it was used in the 2006 Northern Conference champions in the British American Football League.

 

Gateshead Leisure Centre is home to the Gateshead Phoenix Basketball Team. The team currently plays in EBL League Division 4. Home games are usually on a Sunday afternoon during the season, which runs from September to March. The team was formed in 2013 and ended their initial season well placed to progress after defeating local rivals Newcastle Eagles II and promotion chasing Kingston Panthers.

 

In Low Fell there is a cricket club and a rugby club adjacent to each other on Eastwood Gardens. These are Gateshead Fell Cricket Club and Gateshead Rugby Club. Gateshead Rugby Club was formed in 1998 following the merger of Gateshead Fell Rugby Club and North Durham Rugby Club.

 

Transport

Gateshead is served by the following rail transport stations with some being operated by National Rail and some being Tyne & Wear Metro stations: Dunston, Felling, Gateshead Interchange, Gateshead Stadium, Heworth Interchange, MetroCentre and Pelaw.

 

Tyne & Wear Metro stations at Gateshead Interchange and Gateshead Stadium provide direct light-rail access to Newcastle Central, Newcastle Airport , Sunderland, Tynemouth and South Shields Interchange.

 

National Rail services are provided by Northern at Dunston and MetroCentre stations. The East Coast Main Line, which runs from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, cuts directly through the town on its way between Newcastle Central and Chester-le-Street stations. There are presently no stations on this line within Gateshead, as Low Fell, Bensham and Gateshead West stations were closed in 1952, 1954 and 1965 respectively.

 

Road

Several major road links pass through Gateshead, including the A1 which links London to Edinburgh and the A184 which connects the town to Sunderland.

 

Gateshead Interchange is the busiest bus station in Tyne & Wear and was used by 3.9 million bus passengers in 2008.

 

Cycle routes

Various bicycle trails traverse the town; most notably is the recreational Keelmans Way (National Cycle Route 14), which is located on the south bank of the Tyne and takes riders along the entire Gateshead foreshore. Other prominent routes include the East Gateshead Cycleway, which connects to Felling, the West Gateshead Cycleway, which links the town centre to Dunston and the MetroCentre, and routes along both the old and new Durham roads, which take cyclists to Birtley, Wrekenton and the Angel of the North.

 

Religion

Christianity has been present in the town since at least the 7th century, when Bede mentioned a monastery in Gateshead. A church in the town was burned down in 1080 with the Bishop of Durham inside.[citation needed] St Mary's Church was built near to the site of that building, and was the only church in the town until the 1820s. Undoubtedly the oldest building on the Quayside, St Mary's has now re-opened to the public as the town's first heritage centre.

 

Many of the Anglican churches in the town date from the 19th century, when the population of the town grew dramatically and expanded into new areas. The town presently has a number of notable and large churches of many denominations.

 

Judaism

The Bensham district is home to a community of hundreds of Jewish families and used to be known as "Little Jerusalem". Within the community is the Gateshead Yeshiva, founded in 1929, and other Jewish educational institutions with international enrolments. These include two seminaries: Beis Medrash L'Morot and Beis Chaya Rochel seminary, colloquially known together as Gateshead "old" and "new" seminaries.

 

Many yeshivot and kollels also are active. Yeshivat Beer Hatorah, Sunderland Yeshiva, Nesivos Hatorah, Nezer Hatorah and Yeshiva Ketana make up some of the list.

 

Islam

Islam is practised by a large community of people in Gateshead and there are 2 mosques located in the Bensham area (in Ely Street and Villa Place).

 

Twinning

Gateshead is twinned with the town of Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen in France, and the city of Komatsu in Japan.

The Annual British Truck Racing Championship Made its way Back to The Brands Hatch Circuit for its Season Finale Marking the End of Motorsport for the Season.

 

With a Massive Firework Display on the Sunday and Plenty of on and Off Track Action The Weekend was Shaping up to be One to Remember.

 

Many Drivers and Support Races were also Present from the small Yet Nimble Legends Cars to the Much Bigger and more Powerful 1000 Break Horse Power Racing Trucks that will be doing Battle on the circuit Saturday was Looking like a Really Good Start to a Weekend of Speed Madness and Awesome Racing.

Legends Cars Championship (Qualifying)

 

First Up is the Famous and Fan Favourite Legends Cars Championship, Thease Little Tiny Machines Run Yamaha Motorbike Engines within them that run up to 1200/1250cc Depending on the Spec of Engine. They also are 120 Break Horse Power and with how Light Weight they are (1,325lbs Including The Driver) Thease Cars are Very Quick and Very Nimble.

 

Lets Find Out who came where in Qualifying and Who Will be Starting on the Front Row.

 

In First Place Taking Pole and The Fastest Lap was (Chris Needham) in his Legend Coupe 1250 with a Best Lap Time of 55.691 and a Top Speed of 78.08mph. Amazing Work there Chris Well Deserved and Super Job for Pole Position.

 

In Second Place was (Will Gibson) in his Legend 34 Ford Coupe 1250 with a Best Lap Time of 55.721 and a Top Speed of 78.04mph. Superb Job there Will Fighting Hard and Very Nearly Taking Pole from Chris.

Junior Saloon Car Championship (Qualifying Part 1)

 

Next Up we Have The Junior Saloon Car Championship a Racing Series Designed for Much Younger Drivers (Between 14 and 17 Years of Age) who want to try their Hand in Motorsport from a Young Age.

 

Thease Drivers are Mostly Fearless and always Provide some Very Intense and Incredible Racing Due to their Competitive Nature and Determination to Win and Succeed.

 

The Cars Used for This Series are Citroen Saxo VTR'S that are 1600cc In Terms of Power Meaning that Every Driver is on a Level Playing Field when the Racing Starts making for some Close Wheel to Wheel Action and Really showing who the Most Skilled and Quickest Drivers out there are.

 

Speaking of Which Lets Get straight to Qualifying and see who was the Most Fearless and Managed to Clock an Incredible Lap During Qualifying.

 

In First Place Taking Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was (Charlie Hand) in his Citroen Saxo VTR 1600 with a Best Lap Time of 58.554 and a Top Speed of 74.26mph. In credible Driving there Charlie Very Precise and Controlled Thought the Entire Lap to Secure P1 on the Gird Amazing Job.

 

In Second Place was (Jamie Petters) in his Citroen Saxo VTR 1600 with a Best Lap Time of 58.661 and a Top Speed of 74.13mph. Great Work there Jamie Pushing Hard and Securing that P2 Spot on the Front Row of the Gird Superb Job.

CTCRC Racing For Marshals (Qualifying)

 

Next Up was The CTCRC Racing For Marshals Race a Very Special Support Race added to the Weekend at the Last Moments to Congratulate and Commemorate the Important Safety and Work each and Every Marshal of the Circuit does where ever they go and What Ever the Circuit.

 

The Orange Army as they are Known as take out their Time on Weekends to Volunteer at Race Meets Marshalling the Races to ensure Driver Safety is a Top Priority in the Sport and that Rules are being Adhered to.

 

From Volunteers who Clean the Track after Each Race to Flag Wavers to Incident Respondents and even Vehicle Recovery The Orange Army is always on Standby For When Anything goes Wrong. They Have a Passion for Motorsport that Cannot be Matched and a Community that is still Going Strong to this Day all over the Country.

 

The Race itself Features a Wide Variety of Cars from Honda Civic EG2000 to Ford Escort MK1 Mexico's to even Aston Martin V8 Vantages. Each and Every Car has its Strengths and Weaknesses when it comes to Power and Control.

Pickup Truck Championship (Qualifying Part 1)

 

Pickup Trucks made their way out onto the Circuit Next and With some Very Fast and Capable Machinery in each of thease Cars Expect to see Very Fast Lap Times and a Lot of High Speed Action.

 

The Pickup Trucks themselves are Made out of a Space Frame with the Bodies on all the Trucks Just being either Plastic or Fibreglass which Helps to Reduce Weight and Allows for some Very Quick Lap Times around the Circuit.

 

Engine Specifications for the Pickup Trucks Includes a 2.0 Litre Engine Capable of 220 Break Horse Power and Much like The Legends Cars they are Still Very Nimble at High Speeds Resulting in Full concentration and Skill to ensure Victory on the Race Track.

Finally it was Time for The Heavy Weights to make their way out onto the Circuit and with 1000 Break Horse Power under each of the Drivers Right Foot This will Surely be a Qualifying Session of who is Brave Enough to Push their Truck to the Limit and Take Pole Position for Race 1 of the Weekend.

 

In First Place taking Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was (Ryan Smith) in his Mercedes Actros 12000 with a Best Lap Time of 1:00.232 and a Top Speed of 72.19mph. Brilliant Driving from Ryan Really Pushing on and Getting the Job Done to Secure the First Pole Position for Truck Racing this Weekend. Fantastic Drive.

Lastly for the Saturday was The British Truck Racing Championship and after a Really Aggressive Qualifying Session it was Time for each Driver to put their Skills to the Test and Battle it out for a Victory.

 

With Ryan Smith in Pole Position Stuart Oliver in Second and David Jenkins in Third This Race is Going to be One Hell of a Good Race to Witness.

Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a carrier-capable attack aircraft developed for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The delta winged, single-engined Skyhawk was designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Company, and later by McDonnell Douglas. It was originally designated the A4D under the U.S. Navy's pre-1962 designation system. The Skyhawk is a light-weight aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 24,500 pounds (11,100 kg) and has a top speed of more than 600 miles per hour (970 km/h). The aircraft's five hardpoints support a variety of missiles, bombs and other munitions and was capable of delivering nuclear weapons using a low altitude bombing system and a "loft" delivery technique. The A-4 was originally powered by the Wright J65 turbojet engine; from the A-4E onwards, the Pratt & Whitney J52 was used. Skyhawks played key roles in the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, and the Falklands War. Fifty years after the aircraft's first flight, some of the nearly 3,000 produced remain in service with several air arms around the world, including from the Brazilian Navy's aircraft carrier, São Paulo.

 

AMARG (or the Boneyard) is the world's largest aircraft and missile storage and maintenance facility in Tucson, Arizona. I took these pictures during a bus tour in June 2008.

The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), often called The Boneyard, is a United States Air Force aircraft and missile storage and maintenance facility in Tucson, Arizona, located on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. AMARG takes care of more than 4,400 aircraft on 11 km2, which makes it the largest aircraft storage and preservation facility in the world. AMARG holds aircarft for future use, sales to friendly governments, or parts reclamation. Stored aircraft go through the following treatments: removing guns, ejection seat charges, or classified hardware. Draining its fuel system. Sealing it from dust, sunlight, and high temperatures by using high tech vinyl plastic compounds, Spraying an opaque white color on it, or using simple garbage bags. AMARG is a controlled-access site, and is off-limits to anyone not employed there without the proper clearance. The only access to AMARG for non-cleared individuals is via a bus tour.

It was a large freighter by that time, 150 meters long, with a power capable of providing a speed of 14 knots that could carry 9,000 tons of cargo and up to 2,000 passengers. In 1912 it began operating the Hamburg-America line doing different jobs between Europe and Argentina until the outbreak of World War I, when it was based in Buenos Aires. In 1918 the ship was acquired by the Argentinian government and it was not until 1935 when the ship was taken over by the Italian government and renamed again: the Umbria. From that moment its trips were to transport troops and during the following two years carried several thousand soldiers to the Italian colonies in East Africa.

  

The loss of the Umbria

 

In May 1940, when Italy was still neutral in World War II, the Umbria was secretly loaded with 360,000 bombs between 15 kg and 100 kg, 60 boxes of detonators, building materials and three Fiat Lunga cars, carrying a total 8,600 tons of weapons towards the East Africa. The explosives had destination Massawa and Assab, Eritrea, that was Italian colony by then, and the rest of the cargo was heading different locations in Asia. Italy's entry into the war was imminent and this shipment was destined to the defense of the colonies against the Allies and to the possible expansion of its African territories.

   

On 3rd June 1940 the Umbria reached Port Said, northern Egypt, where loaded with 1,000 tons of coal and water in a movement to fool the Allies, trying to look like a harmless freighter. The port, controlled by the Royal Navy, and its authorities allowed the ship enter on the Red Sea three days after arrival. The British delayed the departure of the Umbria knowing that Italy's entry into the war was imminent and that the cargo of Umbria had devastating power that sooner or later would be used against the Allies and why not, to get a great load to fight fascism. But Italy, as a neutral country that it was, had every right to transport weapons much like any other cargo to its colonies.

   

Having met the deadline to be retained, the Umbria crossed the Suez Canal on June 6th but with the escort of the HMS Grimsby. The importance and destructive capacity of the cargo required it. Three days later the Umbria entered in Sudan waters and the HMS Grimsby ordered the Umbria captain to anchor on Wingate Reef under the pretext of searching for contraband. Moments later the British warship HMS Leander arrived with a group of 20 sailors who boarded the Umbria. After thoroughly searching the ship and finding nothing, the captain ordered the British troops to remain the night aboard the Umbria.

The next morning Lorenzo Muiesan, Umbria captain, was in his cabin listening to the radio when Mussolini announced the entry of Italy into the World War II. Hostilities would begin at midnight of that day. Muiesan, a very patriotic captain with long experience, was the only one in the area who had heard the news and knew immediately that both Umbria and the burden would be used by the Allies against their own country. He had no option to disable both. In a move of extraordinary intelligence, as the hours passed retained by the British who did not yet know that Italy was officially the enemy, the captain ordered his crew conducting a rescue simulation... that was more real than the British thought. This maneuver, which the English soldiers agreed as they believed it would serve to further delay the departure of the Umbria. While the Italians occupied the lifeboats, the chief engineers, following Muiesan´s orders, opened all the valves and drown the ship to the bottom of the reef. With the crew safe, the British only had time to get on their ship and watch the freighter slid slowly.

When the captain of HMS Grimsby asked why he had done that Muiesan confirmed the declaration of war from Italy to Britain. The next day Muiesan and the rest of Umbria crew departed detainees to India, where they spent four years in prison.

The Umbria was carrying 360,000 individual aircraft bombs ranging in size from 15, 50 and 100 kg. The vessel also carried a large quantity of fuses, ammunition and detonators as well as other traditional cargo. The captain knew these bombs would be confiscated and used by the enemy against his country should they ever discover them which was why he made the call to sink the ship.

The Umbria had sailed in June 1940 with 6,000 tons of bombs, 60 boxes detonators, explosives, weapons and three Fiat 1100 Lunga from Genoa via Livorno and Naples in the Suez Canal and on the way via Massaua and Assab to Calcutta.

The two seat F-4 Phantom was introduced by the McDonnell Aircraft in 1960. The carrier capable all weather, long-range interceptor, fighter / fighter bomber saw extensive service in the Vietnam War. Navy F-4 pilots shot down 24 enemy MIGS in 1972 alone. A land based model of the aircraft was flown by the U.S. Air Force.

 

The aircraft in the photograph was built as an F4H-1 model and was later redesignated as an F-4B-20 model. The aircraft has the identification marking of Fighter Squadron 161, the Chargers, and the Midway.

The first Soviet production fighter capable of supersonic speeds in level flight, the prototype MiG-19 (NATO code-name "Farmer") made its first flight in September 1953. Entering production in 1955, it became the Soviet Union's primary fighter during the last half of the 1950s. Possibly as many as 10,000 MiG-19s, in various versions, were built by the Soviet Union, China, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Many other countries used the MiG-19, including Cuba, North Vietnam, North Korea, Iraq and most of the Warsaw Pact nations. The Soviet Union phased out the MiG-19 in the early 1960s in favor of the more advanced MiG-21, but other nations continued to use the MiG-19 for many more years.

 

The museum obtained MiG-19S on display from the 457th Technical Evaluation Squadron based at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. It went on display in October 1994.

Lovely sunny Sunday in early September, midway through my 6-week placement at Glanypwll depot as part of my university Engineering course. Andy Putnam says, we need a rake of eight skips, with a red spot (denoting capable of taking a red coupling block) at each end.

 

Shunting motive power is "The Colonel", 20/28hp Dorman engined Motor-Rail Simplex (Builder's number 8788 of 1943). Previously it was used by Colonel Andrew Campbell (Gwynedd solicitor and former member of The Black Watch) as his private locomotive, and means of access to Y Dduallt, a fifteenth century manor house by the line-side with no road access. Before that it was used by St. Albans Sand and Gravel. It was acquired by the FR on The Colonel's death in1982 and named in his memory.

 

In 2009 it was dismantled, the power unit (not the original - from a more modern Simplex "Sandra", 22119 of 1961) into the frames of another FR Simplex "The Lady Diana" (21579 of 1956), together with Sandra's gearbox, new bodywork and windows recovered from a Ford Transit. Cobbletogetherer -in-chief, aforementioned Andy Putnam didn't get to see the new creation completed before his death, but it is named "Andy" in his memory.

The highest ranked officer from Santa Clara Valley, Henry Naglee was a capable leader who unfortunately was involved in very public sexual scandals that shocked Gilded Age California. A graduate of West Point, Henry Naglee participated in the occupation of California in 1846 as an officer during the Mexican American War, but left the military to become a banker and the leader of 1st California Guards, the eventual California National Guard. After touring Europe to study viticulture, Naglee opened a vineyard in San Jose to make brandy famed throughout the country, one of the earliest contributions to California's massive wine industry. In 1861 with the advent of the American Civil War, Naglee rejoined the US Army fighting in the Peninsula Campaign, and was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines while leading a brigade. By 1863 Naglee was appointed to command the Union VII Corps garrisoned around Suffolk, Virginia but would soon be removed from active duty and mustered out a year later.

 

Before he left to join the war, Naglee had signaled his affections for one Mary Schell. During the conflict, Naglee wrote a continuous stream of lurid love letters to Schell as well as other observations. However after returning to California, Naglee rebuffed Schell, who furiously published his letters as "The Love Life of Brigadier General Henry M. Naglee, Consisting of a correspondence on Love, War and Politics". His passionate prose, mixed with his dim views of comrades in arms, sent tongues wagging and drove Naglee into seclusion. A second scandal erupted only five years later. In 1871, after the death of his wife in childbirth, Naglee employed Emily Hanks as a nursemaid for his children. In 1877 however, Hanks filed a breach of promise suit, stating that Naglee had proposed marriage and then attempted to seduce her. Two lurid trials occurred, and though the courts initially ruled in favor of Hanks they finally ruled in favor of Naglee.

 

Naglee's vineyard property was later sold by his daughters to form the San Jose residential district of Naglee Park. His daughters also erected this monument to their father in St. James Park.

The Theresian Military Academy was under Maria Theresa on 14 December 1751 with the mission "Make he me thereof capable officers and righteous men" to the first commander Field Marshal Leopold Joseph of Daun founded and is, thus, the oldest active uninterruptedly the officer training dedicated Military Academy of the World. Memorable is that the building since 1752 - except for the years of occupation, war and destruction due to the Third Reich - uninterruptedly hosted the Military Academy, while the Royal Military Academy Woolwich, founded in 1741, was closed in 1939. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, founded in 1947, only from a sentimental point of view continues the tradition of its predecessor academy. In Wiener Neustadt, in contrast, were admitted since 1752 almost without interruption per year 100 nobles and 100 commoners. The officers of the Austria-Hungarian army as well were to 1918 formed here.

The term military academy it wears since the unification with the nursery of Cadets in 1769. Already in 1771 appeared a by local director lieutenant field marshal Johann Georg Carl Freiherr von Hannig elaborated regulated curriculum and 1775 the by Maria Theresa sanctioned Academy Regulations. The training period at that time was eleven years and was gradually reduced to three years.

A special feature in the time between the Austrofascism and the Annexation is the refusal of Major General Rudolf Towarek (1933-1938 Commander of the Military Academy), to hand over the castle to German Wehrmacht which had just invated Austria. He had the guard paraded with fixed bayonet and so refused the Wehrmacht several days admission to the castle. This act had until his retirement no negative impacts on Major General Towarek, he even obtained permission to continue to wear the Austrian uniform after his retirement.

By Colonel Erwin Rommel, later Field Marshal, immediately after the Annexation a training school for officer training was set up which he at the beginning also directed himself. To the school the Daun barracks was added.

Towards the end of World War II, the castle was almost completely destroyed by bombs, fires and looting. It burned in April and May 1945 within almost 14 days completely down. The remaining ruins were in the reconstruction in the years 1946 to 1959 restored to its historical form, the interior, however, adapted to current requirements. So the military academy was able to resume operations in the year 1958.

After the founding of the Armed Forces in 1955, the Military Academy was housed again until 1958 in Enns, from where it subsequently moved back to the castle of Wiener Neustadt, that after the damages caused by the Second World War had been repaired.

In Vienna Museum of Military History, the campaign streamer of the first flag of the military academy is set up. It was donated by Maria Theresia just before her death in 1780 for the first flag, supposedly she should have embroidered it personally. Under the banner ribbon there are two paintings (gouaches) of Bernhard Albrecht (1758-1822). Albrecht was an art teacher at the Military Academy and he also depicted the pupils in their military and athletic exercises. So show the images scenes as "target practice with mortars" and "balancing exercises of cadets at the high balance beam". The sheets have emerged 1785-1793.

The current commander is Brigadier Karl Pronhagl.

Diese Tat hatte bis auf seine Pensionierung keine negativen Auswirkungen auf Generalmajor Towarek, er erhielt sogar die Erlaubnis, nach seiner Pensionierung weiterhin die österreichische Uniform zu tragen.

Von Oberst Erwin Rommel, dem späteren Generalfeldmarschall, wurde unmittelbar nach dem Anschluss eine Kriegsschule für die Offiziersausbildung eingerichtet, die er anfangs auch selbst leitete. Zu der Schule kam auch die Daun-Kaserne dazu.

Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Burg durch Fliegerbomben, Brände und Plünderungen fast vollkommen zerstört. Sie brannte im April und Mai 1945 innerhalb von fast 14 Tagen restlos aus. Die übrig gebliebene Ruine wurde beim Wiederaufbau in den Jahren 1946 bis 1959 in ihrer historischen Form wiederhergestellt, das Innere jedoch den zeitlichen Erfordernissen angepasst. So konnte die Militärakademie im Jahr 1958 ihren Betrieb wieder aufnehmen.

Nach der Gründung des Bundesheeres im Jahr 1955 war die Militärakademie nochmals bis 1958 in Enns untergebracht, von wo sie anschließend wieder in die Burg von Wiener Neustadt übersiedelte, nachdem die Beschädigungen durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg behoben worden waren.

Im Wiener Heeresgeschichtlichen Museum ist das Fahnenband der ersten Fahne der Militärakademie ausgestellt. Es wurde von Maria Theresia knapp vor ihrem Tod 1780 für die erste Fahne gestiftet, angeblich soll sie es persönlich bestickt haben. Unter dem Fahnenband befinden sich zwei Bilder (Gouachen) von Bernhard Albrecht (1758–1822). Albrecht war Zeichenlehrer der Militärakademie und schilderte auch die Zöglinge bei ihren militärischen und sportlichen Übungen. So zeigen die Bilder Szenen wie „Übungsschießen mit Mörsern“ und „Balancierübungen der Kadetten auf dem hohen Balkensteg“. Die Blätter sind zwischen 1785 und 1793 entstanden.

Three days later the Umbria entered in Sudan waters and the HMS Grimsby ordered the Umbria captain to anchor on Wingate Reef under the pretext of searching for contraband. Moments later the British warship HMS Leander arrived with a group of 20 sailors who boarded the Umbria. After thoroughly searching the ship and finding nothing, the captain ordered the British troops to remain the night aboard the Umbria.

The next morning Lorenzo Muiesan, Umbria captain, was in his cabin listening to the radio when Mussolini announced the entry of Italy into the World War II. Hostilities would begin at midnight of that day. Muiesan, a very patriotic captain with long experience, was the only one in the area who had heard the news and knew immediately that both Umbria and the burden would be used by the Allies against their own country. He had no option to disable both. In a move of extraordinary intelligence, as the hours passed retained by the British who did not yet know that Italy was officially the enemy, the captain ordered his crew conducting a rescue simulation... that was more real than the British thought. This maneuver, which the English soldiers agreed as they believed it would serve to further delay the departure of the Umbria. While the Italians occupied the lifeboats, the chief engineers, following Muiesan´s orders, opened all the valves and drown the ship to the bottom of the reef. With the crew safe, the British only had time to get on their ship and watch the freighter slid slowly.

When the captain of HMS Grimsby asked why he had done that Muiesan confirmed the declaration of war from Italy to Britain. The next day Muiesan and the rest of Umbria crew departed detainees to India, where they spent four years in prison.

  

CARGO:

The Umbria was carrying 360,000 individual aircraft bombs ranging in size from 15, 50 and 100 kg. The vessel also carried a large quantity of fuses, ammunition and detonators as well as other traditional cargo. The captain knew these bombs would be confiscated and used by the enemy against his country should they ever discover them which was why he made the call to sink the ship.

The Umbria had sailed in June 1940 with 6,000 tons of bombs, 60 boxes detonators, explosives, weapons and three Fiat 1100 Lunga from Genoa via Livorno and Naples in the Suez Canal and on the way via Massaua and Assab to Calcutta.

Il repart ce mardi après son escale de la Pentecôte bassin Vauban. Les promeneurs du quai Saint-Louis ont pu admirer plusieurs jours l'élégante goélette à hunier à trois-mâts de 70 m de long construite en 1937 pour le ministère danois de l'agriculture et de la pêche. Racheté en 2007, il a été transformé pour devenir un voilier de croisière.

Le 'Gulden Leeuw' a été conçu et construit comme navire de catégorie supérieure, capable de naviguer sur les océans. En combinaison avec les gréements choisis, il deviendra un navire rapide et fiable. Nous voulons un navire qui sache vraiment naviguer à la voile. Les gréements ne doivent pas seulement servir de décoration, mais ils doivent aussi réellement disposer de bonnes dispositions pour naviguer à la voile. Le 'Gulden Leeuw' est une goélette à huniers à trois mâts; le mât avant est donc également à voiles carrées. Ces gréements très variés combinent les avantages d'un voilier à voiles carrées à ceux d'un navire à gréements longitudinaux. Vous pouvez naviguez près du vent ou prendre les vents alizés. Avec ce Grand Voilier, nous pouvons naviguer dans toutes les eaux internationales.

L'ambiance des années 30

Le style des années 30 fut caractérisé d'une part, par des matériaux précieux et somptueux, souvent réalisés à la main, décoratifs et luxueux. D'autre part, on recherchait les formes simples et fonctionnelles. Une excellente qualité et un niveau élevé de finition allaient de soi. Notre navire a été construit en 1937. On a pu conserver de très beaux détails authentiques. Nous revenons à nouveau à ces caractéristiques originales, ce qui donne à notre navire une ambiance merveilleuse.

Aménagement du pont

Le 'Gulden Leeuw' a un énorme pont central sur lequel tous les invités peuvent être présents en même temps. Ce pont central jouxte le rouf qui sera pourvu de grandes portes-fenêtres. Ce qui a pour avantage que le rouf et le pont central semblent former un grand espace. L'intérieur et l'extérieur sont réunis. Il sera possible de recouvrir le navire tout entier. Quand nous nous promenons sur le pont, nous passons par de très larges coursives où on placera des petits bancs chargés de nostalgie. Rien qu'à l'extérieur, on a déjà créé 170 places assises. Vous atteignez le sun-deck via le pont arrière.

Disposition à l'intérieur

Notre 'captains-VIP-lounge' jouxte le pont arrière. C'est un vaste espace avec un feu ouvert, habillage Chesterfield et une grande variété de bons whiskys et de cigares. C'est un endroit où on passe un moment à bavarder. Quand nous allons plus loin, nous passons devant le vestiaire dans le grand rouf, où vous trouvez un bar au centre. Si vous descendez l'escalier, vous arrivez à la salle à manger multifonctionnelle. Toutes les tables, toutes les chaises et toutes les banquettes peuvent être enlevées en un minimum de temps ou disposées d'une autre manière. Il est donc possible d'utiliser ce grand espace comme salle de danse, salle de séminaire ou dortoir, par exemple,

Throughout the course of the journey, the trainees are provided with a sense of seafaring tradition and values, which are indispensable for life on board and within a close community. The group on board is an independent community, almost like a small town in terms of the challenges that it faces, which cannot be ignored and must be overcome. In doing so, personal commitment is promoted and reinforced. Due to the small size of the team in comparison to those on board large freight vessels, the trainees are able to assist in every area on board – from the ship’s management, right through to route planning. Learning by doing is what we do. Depending on the duration of a trip, it is also possible to go into further detail in some areas. Here, a primary focus is on training and encouraging the aspects of community and team-spirit.

The “Gulden Leeuw” is a big, sturdy sailing ship reminiscent of the 30’s and with the deck layout of a classic yacht.

This ship was built in 1937 on behalf of the Danish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The DANA was designed and built as an ocean-going ice class ship. During her period of service for the Danish government, she was frequently used for marine biological research, not only in Danish waters but also in international ones. The ship has a rich history. She sailed as a researcher, supplier and even as a training ship for a Danish nautical college.

In the past two years the ship has been converted into a three-masted topsail schooner, so the foremast is also yard-rigged. This very versatile rigging combines the advantages of a square-sailed ship and a fore-and-aft rigged ship.

The “Gulden Leeuw” offers space for up to 200 passengers on day sails and for 56 trainees on longer voyages. We are passionate about sail training and are eager to “show you the ropes”. On board our ship we appreciate team spirit.

The ship has a luxurious flair and is therefore also very suitable for corporate hospitality, seminars and day trips.

Le tarmac Sud du musée n'est capable d'accueillir que trois gros appareils. L'installation des appareils fut définitivement terminée après que le premier prototype de l'A400M-180 y fut arrivé le 16 juillet 2015, en dépit de la possibilité de 360 000 euros de TVA.

Dans la première section des vitrages transparents permettent de voir la structure et les systèmes de l'avion, tandis que dans les sections suivantes sont représentés des aménagements de première classe et VIP.

Super Guppy de l'association Ailes Anciennes Toulouse, l'appareil qui servait au transport des tronçons d'Airbus est exposé porte ouverte, et une passerelle permet l'accès à la soute où un film est projeté. L'ouverture n'a pas été une mince affaire, l'appareil n'ayant pas été ouvert pendant 15 ans. L'aide des anciens mécaniciens de l'avion a été primordiale pour permettre une ouverture en toute sécurité.

Aeroscopia is a French aeronautical museum located in Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), near the AéroConstellation site, and notably hosts two copies of the Concorde, which opened on January 14, 2015

 

The south tarmac of the museum can only accommodate three large aircraft. The installation of the devices was definitively finished after the first prototype of the A400M-180 arrived there on July 16, 2015, despite the possibility of 360,000 euros in VAT.

Concorde, F-WTSB, MSN201 (ANAE), this is a pre-production aircraft which was used, among other things, to transport several presidents of the French Republic.

Airbus A300B4-203, F-WUAB, MSN238 (Airbus Heritage), decorated in the colors of the prototype, instead of dismantled MSN001. The interior can be visited. In the first section transparent glazing allows to see the structure and systems of the aircraft, while in the following sections are shown first class and VIP fittings.

Super Guppy from the Ailes Anciennes Toulouse association, the aircraft which was used to transport the Airbus sections is on display with the door open, and a gangway allows access to the hold where a film is shown. Opening was no small feat, as the device has not been opened for 15 years. The help of the former mechanics of the aircraft was essential to allow a safe opening.

The Tornado GR4 is a variable geometry, two-seat, day or night, all-weather attack aircraft, capable of delivering a wide variety of weapons. Powered by two Rolls-Royce RB 199 Mk 103 turbofan engines, the GR4 is capable of low-level supersonic flight and can sustain a high subsonic cruise speed. The aircraft can fly automatically at low level using terrain-following radar when poor weather prevents visual flight. The aircraft is also equipped with forward-looking infrared and is night-vision goggle compatible, making it a capable platform for passive night operations. For navigation purposes, the Tornado is equipped with an integrated global positioning inertial navigation system that can also be updated with visual or radar inputs. The GR4 is also equipped with a Laser Ranger and Marked Target Seeker system that can be used for ground designation or can provide accurate range information on ground targets.

 

The GR4 can carry up to three Paveway II, two Paveway III or Enhanced Paveway Laser and Global Positioning System Guided Bombs (LGBs), and by using a Thermal Imaging Airborne Laser Designation (TIALD) pod it is able to self-designate targets for LGB delivery. The GR4 also has a ground-mapping radar to identify targets for the delivery of conventional 1000lb bombs. All GR4 aircraft are capable of carrying the Air Launched Anti- Radiation Missile (ALARM), which homes on the emitted radiation of enemy radar systems and can be used for the suppression of enemy air defences. The GR4 is capable of carrying up to nine ALARM missiles or a mixed configuration of ALARM missiles and bombs. In the reconnaissance role the GR4 can carry the Digital Joint Reconnaissance Pod to provide detailed reconnaissance imagery; this is currently being replaced with the RAPTOR pod, which provides an even greater day-and night reconnaissance potential.

 

For self-protection, the GR4 is normally armed with two AIM-9L Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles, a BOZ-107 Pod on the right wing to dispense chaff and flares and a Sky Shadow-2 electronic countermeasures pod on the left wing. The aircraft can also carry an integral 27mm Mauser cannon capable of firing 1700 rounds per minute.

 

The Tornado GR4 is now equipped with the Storm Shadow missile and the new Brimstone missile. The Storm Shadow allows the Tornado to make precision strikes in poor weather with a greatly increased stand-off range from the target area. Brimstone provides the Tornado with an effective anti-armour weapon, also providing an enhanced stand-off range.

 

The Tornado GR4 is currently operated from two bases. Based at RAF Lossiemouth, in Scotland, are the Operational Conversion Unit, No. 15(R) Squadron, and Nos 12(B), 14 and 617 Squadrons. RAF Marham is the home of the GR4s of Nos II(AC), IX(B), 13 and 31 Squadrons.

 

In addition to its long-range, high-speed precision strike capability, including supersonic at low level with a low-level combat radius of 400nmls, the Tornado GR4 is a world leader in the specialised field of all-weather, day and night tactical reconnaissance. The new RAPTOR (Reconnaissance Airborne Pod TORnado) pod is one of the most advanced reconnaissance sensors in the world and greatly increased the effectiveness of the aircraft in the reconnaissance role. Its introduction into service gave the GR4 the ability to download real-time, long-range, oblique-photography data to ground stations or to the cockpit during a mission. The stand-off range of the sensors also allows the aircraft to remain outside heavily defended areas, thus minimising the aircraft’s exposure to enemy air-defence systems.

 

Some Tornado GR4s involved in Operation Telic were fitted with the RAPTOR pod and the aircraft is currently employed in the Gulf on both Close Support and Reconnaissance missions in support of Coalition Forces in Afghanistan.

The Theresian Military Academy was under Maria Theresa on 14 December 1751 with the mission "Make he me thereof capable officers and righteous men" to the first commander Field Marshal Leopold Joseph of Daun founded and is, thus, the oldest active uninterruptedly the officer training dedicated Military Academy of the World. Memorable is that the building since 1752 - except for the years of occupation, war and destruction due to the Third Reich - uninterruptedly hosted the Military Academy, while the Royal Military Academy Woolwich, founded in 1741, was closed in 1939. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, founded in 1947, only from a sentimental point of view continues the tradition of its predecessor academy. In Wiener Neustadt, in contrast, were admitted since 1752 almost without interruption per year 100 nobles and 100 commoners. The officers of the Austria-Hungarian army as well were to 1918 formed here.

The term military academy it wears since the unification with the nursery of Cadets in 1769. Already in 1771 appeared a by local director lieutenant field marshal Johann Georg Carl Freiherr von Hannig elaborated regulated curriculum and 1775 the by Maria Theresa sanctioned Academy Regulations. The training period at that time was eleven years and was gradually reduced to three years.

The famous Styrian Archduke Johann of Austria was 44 years (1805-1849) Chief Executive Officer of Theresian Military Academy.

In the First Republic, the training was to 1934 performed in Enns (Upper Austria) and then again in Wiener Neustadt. A special feature in the time between the Austrofascism and the Annexation is the refusal of Major General Rudolf Towarek (1933-1938 Commander of the Military Academy), to hand over the castle to German Wehrmacht which had just invated Austria. He had the guard paraded with fixed bayonet and so refused the Wehrmacht several days admission to the castle. This act had until his retirement no negative impacts on Major General Towarek, he even obtained permission to continue to wear the Austrian uniform after his retirement.

By Colonel Erwin Rommel, later Field Marshal, immediately after the Annexation a training school for officer training was set up which he at the beginning also directed himself. To the school the Daun barracks was added.

Towards the end of World War II, the castle was almost completely destroyed by bombs, fires and looting. It burned in April and May 1945 within almost 14 days completely down. The remaining ruins were in the reconstruction in the years 1946 to 1959 restored to its historical form, the interior, however, adapted to current requirements. So the military academy was able to resume operations in the year 1958.

After the founding of the Armed Forces in 1955, the Military Academy was housed again until 1958 in Enns, from where it subsequently moved back to the castle of Wiener Neustadt, that after the damages caused by the Second World War had been repaired.

In Vienna Museum of Military History, the campaign streamer of the first flag of the military academy is set up. It was donated by Maria Theresia just before her death in 1780 for the first flag, supposedly she should have embroidered it personally. Under the banner ribbon there are two paintings (gouaches) of Bernhard Albrecht (1758-1822). Albrecht was an art teacher at the Military Academy and he also depicted the pupils in their military and athletic exercises. So show the images scenes as "target practice with mortars" and "balancing exercises of cadets at the high balance beam". The sheets have emerged 1785-1793.

The current commander is Brigadier Karl Pronhagl.

 

Die Theresianische Militärakademie wurde unter Maria Theresia am 14. Dezember 1751 mit dem Auftrag „Mach’ er mir tüchtige Offiziere und rechtschaffene Männer darauß“ an den ersten Kommandanten Feldmarschall Leopold Joseph von Daun gegründet und ist somit die älteste aktive, durchgängig der Offiziersausbildung gewidmete Militärakademie der Welt. Denkwürdig ist, dass das Gebäude seit 1752 – mit Ausnahme der Okkupations- Kriegs- und Zerstörungsjahre in Folge des Dritten Reiches durchgängig die Militärakademie beherbergte, wogegen die 1741 gegründete Royal Military Academy Woolwich 1939 geschlossen wurde. Die Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, gegründet 1947, setzt nur in ideeller Hinsicht die Tradition ihrer Vorgängerakademie fort. In Wiener Neustadt wurden dagegen seit 1752 fast durchgängig pro Jahr je 100 Adelige und 100 Bürgerliche aufgenommen. Auch die Offiziere der Österreich-Ungarischen Armee wurden bis 1918 hier ausgebildet.

Die Bezeichnung Militärakademie trägt sie seit der Vereinigung mit der Pflanzschule für Kadetten im Jahr 1769. Bereits 1771 erschien ein vom Lokaldirektor Feldmarschalleutnant Johann Georg Carl Freiherr von Hannig ausgearbeiteter geregelter Studienplan und 1775 das von Maria Theresia sanktionierte Akademie-Reglement. Die Ausbildungszeit betrug damals elf Jahre und wurde schrittweise auf drei Jahre verkürzt.

Der berühmte steirische Erzherzog Johann von Österreich war 44 Jahre (von 1805 bis 1849) Oberdirektor der Theresianischen Militär-Akademie.

In der ersten Republik wurde die Ausbildung bis 1934 in Enns durchgeführt und anschließend wieder in Wiener Neustadt. Eine Besonderheit in der Zeit zwischen dem Austrofaschismus und dem Anschluss ist die Weigerung des Generalmajors Rudolf Towarek (1933–1938 Kommandant der Militärakademie), die Burg der in Österreich einmarschierten deutschen Wehrmacht zu übergeben. Er ließ die Wache mit aufgepflanzten Bajonett aufmarschieren und verweigerte so der Wehrmacht mehrere Tage den Zutritt zur Burg. Diese Tat hatte bis auf seine Pensionierung keine negativen Auswirkungen auf Generalmajor Towarek, er erhielt sogar die Erlaubnis, nach seiner Pensionierung weiterhin die österreichische Uniform zu tragen.

Von Oberst Erwin Rommel, dem späteren Generalfeldmarschall, wurde unmittelbar nach dem Anschluss eine Kriegsschule für die Offiziersausbildung eingerichtet, die er anfangs auch selbst leitete. Zu der Schule kam auch die Daun-Kaserne dazu.

Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Burg durch Fliegerbomben, Brände und Plünderungen fast vollkommen zerstört. Sie brannte im April und Mai 1945 innerhalb von fast 14 Tagen restlos aus. Die übrig gebliebene Ruine wurde beim Wiederaufbau in den Jahren 1946 bis 1959 in ihrer historischen Form wiederhergestellt, das Innere jedoch den zeitlichen Erfordernissen angepasst. So konnte die Militärakademie im Jahr 1958 ihren Betrieb wieder aufnehmen.

So zeigen die Bilder Szenen wie „Übungsschießen mit Mörsern“ und „Balancierübungen der Kadetten auf dem hohen Balkensteg“. Die Blätter sind zwischen 1785 und 1793 entstanden.

The Theresian Military Academy was under Maria Theresa on 14 December 1751 with the mission "Make he me thereof capable officers and righteous men" to the first commander Field Marshal Leopold Joseph of Daun founded and is, thus, the oldest active uninterruptedly the officer training dedicated Military Academy of the World. Memorable is that the building since 1752 - except for the years of occupation, war and destruction due to the Third Reich - uninterruptedly hosted the Military Academy, while the Royal Military Academy Woolwich, founded in 1741, was closed in 1939. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, founded in 1947, only from a sentimental point of view continues the tradition of its predecessor academy. In Wiener Neustadt, in contrast, were admitted since 1752 almost without interruption per year 100 nobles and 100 commoners. The officers of the Austria-Hungarian army as well were to 1918 formed here.

The term military academy it wears since the unification with the nursery of Cadets in 1769. Already in 1771 appeared a by local director lieutenant field marshal Johann Georg Carl Freiherr von Hannig elaborated regulated curriculum and 1775 the by Maria Theresa sanctioned Academy Regulations. The training period at that time was eleven years and was gradually reduced to three years.

The famous Styrian Archduke Johann of Austria was 44 years (1805-1849) Chief Executive Officer of Theresian Military Academy.

In the First Republic, the training was to 1934 performed in Enns (Upper Austria) and then again in Wiener Neustadt. A special feature in the time between the Austrofascism and the Annexation is the refusal of Major General Rudolf Towarek (1933-1938 Commander of the Military Academy), to hand over the castle to German Wehrmacht which had just invated Austria. He had the guard paraded with fixed bayonet and so refused the Wehrmacht several days admission to the castle. This act had until his retirement no negative impacts on Major General Towarek, he even obtained permission to continue to wear the Austrian uniform after his retirement.

By Colonel Erwin Rommel, later Field Marshal, immediately after the Annexation a training school for officer training was set up which he at the beginning also directed himself. To the school the Daun barracks was added.

Towards the end of World War II, the castle was almost completely destroyed by bombs, fires and looting. It burned in April and May 1945 within almost 14 days completely down. The remaining ruins were in the reconstruction in the years 1946 to 1959 restored to its historical form, the interior, however, adapted to current requirements. So the military academy was able to resume operations in the year 1958.

After the founding of the Armed Forces in 1955, the Military Academy was housed again until 1958 in Enns, from where it subsequently moved back to the castle of Wiener Neustadt, that after the damages caused by the Second World War had been repaired.

In Vienna Museum of Military History, the campaign streamer of the first flag of the military academy is set up. It was donated by Maria Theresia just before her death in 1780 for the first flag, supposedly she should have embroidered it personally. Under the banner ribbon there are two paintings (gouaches) of Bernhard Albrecht (1758-1822). Albrecht was an art teacher at the Military Academy and he also depicted the pupils in their military and athletic exercises. So show the images scenes as "target practice with mortars" and "balancing exercises of cadets at the high balance beam". The sheets have emerged 1785-1793.

The current commander is Brigadier Karl Pronhagl.

Die Bezeichnung Militärakademie trägt sie seit der Vereinigung mit der Pflanzschule für Kadetten im Jahr 1769. Bereits 1771 erschien ein vom Lokaldirektor Feldmarschalleutnant Johann Georg Carl Freiherr von Hannig ausgearbeiteter geregelter Studienplan und 1775 das von Maria Theresia sanktionierte Akademie-Reglement. Die Ausbildungszeit betrug damals elf Jahre und wurde schrittweise auf drei Jahre verkürzt.

Der berühmte steirische Erzherzog Johann von Österreich war 44 Jahre (von 1805 bis 1849) Oberdirektor der Theresianischen Militär-Akademie.

In der ersten Republik wurde die Ausbildung bis 1934 in Enns durchgeführt und anschließend wieder in Wiener Neustadt. Eine Besonderheit in der Zeit zwischen dem Austrofaschismus und dem Anschluss ist die Weigerung des Generalmajors Rudolf Towarek (1933–1938 Kommandant der Militärakademie), die Burg der in Österreich einmarschierten deutschen Wehrmacht zu übergeben. Er ließ die Wache mit aufgepflanzten Bajonett aufmarschieren und verweigerte so der Wehrmacht mehrere Tage den Zutritt zur Burg. Diese Tat hatte bis auf seine Pensionierung keine negativen Auswirkungen auf Generalmajor Towarek, er erhielt sogar die Erlaubnis, nach seiner Pensionierung weiterhin die österreichische Uniform zu tragen.

Von Oberst Erwin Rommel, dem späteren Generalfeldmarschall, wurde unmittelbar nach dem Anschluss eine Kriegsschule für die Offiziersausbildung eingerichtet, die er anfangs auch selbst leitete. Zu der Schule kam auch die Daun-Kaserne dazu.

Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Burg durch Fliegerbomben, Brände und Plünderungen fast vollkommen zerstört. Sie brannte im April und Mai 1945 innerhalb von fast 14 Tagen restlos aus. Die übrig gebliebene Ruine wurde beim Wiederaufbau in den Jahren 1946 bis 1959 in ihrer historischen Form wiederhergestellt, das Innere jedoch den zeitlichen Erfordernissen angepasst. So konnte die Militärakademie im Jahr 1958 ihren Betrieb wieder aufnehmen.

Aeroscopia est un musée aéronautique français implanté à Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), près du site AéroConstellation, et accueille notamment deux exemplaires du Concorde, dont l'ouverture a eu lieu le 14 janvier 2015

 

Le tarmac Sud du musée n'est capable d'accueillir que trois gros appareils. L'installation des appareils fut définitivement terminée après que le premier prototype de l'A400M-180 y fut arrivé le 16 juillet 2015, en dépit de la possibilité de 360 000 euros de TVA.

Airbus A300B4-203, F-WUAB, MSN238 (Airbus Heritage), décoré aux couleurs du prototype, au lieu de MSN001 démantelé. L'intérieur est visitable. Dans la première section des vitrages transparents permettent de voir la structure et les systèmes de l'avion, tandis que dans les sections suivantes sont représentés des aménagements de première classe et VIP.

Super Guppy de l'association Ailes Anciennes Toulouse, l'appareil qui servait au transport des tronçons d'Airbus est exposé porte ouverte, et une passerelle permet l'accès à la soute où un film est projeté. L'ouverture n'a pas été une mince affaire, l'appareil n'ayant pas été ouvert pendant 15 ans. L'aide des anciens mécaniciens de l'avion a été primordiale pour permettre une ouverture en toute sécurité.

Aeroscopia is a French aeronautical museum located in Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), near the AéroConstellation site, and notably hosts two copies of the Concorde, which opened on January 14, 2015

 

The south tarmac of the museum can only accommodate three large aircraft. The installation of the devices was definitively finished after the first prototype of the A400M-180 arrived there on July 16, 2015, despite the possibility of 360,000 euros in VAT.

Concorde, F-WTSB, MSN201 (ANAE), this is a pre-production aircraft which was used, among other things, to transport several presidents of the French Republic.

Airbus A300B4-203, F-WUAB, MSN238 (Airbus Heritage), decorated in the colors of the prototype, instead of dismantled MSN001. The interior can be visited. In the first section transparent glazing allows to see the structure and systems of the aircraft, while in the following sections are shown first class and VIP fittings.

Super Guppy from the Ailes Anciennes Toulouse association, the aircraft which was used to transport the Airbus sections is on display with the door open, and a gangway allows access to the hold where a film is shown. Opening was no small feat, as the device has not been opened for 15 years. The help of the former mechanics of the aircraft was essential to allow a safe opening.

Airbus A300B4-203, F-WUAB, MSN238 (Airbus Heritage), decorated in the colors of the prototype, instead of dismantled MSN001. The interior can be visited. In the first section transparent glazing allows to see the structure and systems of the aircraft, while in the following sections are shown first class and VIP fittings.

Super Guppy from the Ailes Anciennes Toulouse association, the aircraft which was used to transport the Airbus sections is on display with the door open, and a gangway allows access to the hold where a film is shown. Opening was no small feat, as the device has not been opened for 15 years. The help of the former mechanics of the aircraft was essential to allow a safe opening.
