Alla Famiglia delle Pieridi appartengono circa 1500 specie, ma in Italia e in Europa sono presenti meno di una ventina. Sono facilmente individuabili, perché hanno ali generalmente bianche o gialle con pochi disegni. Il dimorfismo sessuale è sempre evidente e ci possono essere anche differenze stagionali fra le diverse generazioni.

Le zampe sono tutte uguali e funzionali. Le ali posteriori hanno il bordo interno lievemente convesso e ripiegato sotto l’addome.

Le larve, fitofaghe, vivono prevalentemente su Crucifere e Resedacee e spesso invadono massicciamente le coltivazioni. Le crisalidi sono sospese o cinturate e terminano anteriormente con una prominenza.

La sottofamiglia delle Coliadini è una delle quattro appartenenti alla famiglia delle Pieridi. Comprende circa 15 generi suddivisi in circa 300 specie.

La cedronella (Gonepteryx rhamni) è una delle farfalle più precoci in quanto sverna allo stato di adulto, protetta nelle cavità naturali: i primi individui volano già in febbraio; i naturalisti vedono in questo un segno sicuro che l’inverno è terminato. E’ una farfalla diffusa e comune della zona Paleartica.

Il dimorfismo sessuale è marcato: i maschi hanno un bel colore giallo limone, mentre le femmine sono più chiare. I maschi si riconoscono facilmente anche in volo per il loro colore giallo vivace. La tipica forma delle ali, comune ai due sessi, si apprezza soprattutto negli esemplari posati e costituisce un sicuro riconoscimento delle femmine, che hanno un colore giallo verdognolo a differenza dei maschi, che come detto, sono giallo limone.

Il periodo di volo va febbraio-maggio per i soggetti che hanno passato lo stadio di “ibernazione” e luglio-ottobre

Il bruco si nutre di spincervino (Rhamnus) o di frangola (Frangula alnus)
