Gran Canaria's aloe vera farms are famous for producing premium-quality aloe vera, benefiting from the island's sunny climate and mineral-rich volcanic soil. Visitors can explore these farms to learn about the cultivation and extraction processes, often with guided tours highlighting the plant's medicinal and cosmetic uses. Many farms also offer on-site shops where customers can purchase natural aloe-based products, such as skincare creams and soothing gels.

Early morning walk on the beach at Patalavaca, Gran Canaria. This is a natural (volcanic sand) beach which glitters in the sun from all that (I assume) mica. The next beach along (where the boats are pointing to) is a white sand man made job.

Pocos atardeceres como este he visto yo en mi vida... Y eso que me estuve quejando todo el dia porque habían nubes altas por encima del Teide...

Canarias:

When the war began, Canarias was already performing sea trials while Baleares was waiting the arrival of part of it´s artillery at Ferrol. The two ships were seized by the sailors who supported the Republic (together with the Battleship España) but after some shooting, the Nationalist forces were able to conquer the city of Ferrol and recover the ships almost undamaged.

For most of the war, the two ships operated together and hunted ships carrying reinforcements for the Republicans and as a result, Canarias sunk a total of 34 ships, including the Republican destroyer Almirate Ferrandiz and the Soviet freighter Komsomol.

The two ships frequently bombed Republican coastal cities like Malaga, Barcelona and Cartagena, and only the coastal gun batteries prevented them from causing more damage to the cities. They were also constantly attacked by the Republican Air Force.

Baleares

Since most of the Spanish Navy fell on Republican hands, much effort was put by the Nationalists to complete the two ships as quickly as possible; because of this, Baleares operated some time without it´s Y turret, which was refitted in 1937.

In 1938, during the battle of Cape Palos, Baleares was sunk with heavy loss of life by a torpedo fired from a Republican Destroyer.

A series of monuments were made dedicated to the dead sailors, the biggest one at Palma de Mallorca. Since most of the crew came from the Basque Country, two monuments have also been made at Ondárroa. One of them was destroyed by vandals in 2019, following similar occurrences around the world.

Santa Lucia de Tirajana

Excursion In the Barranco de Tirajana

The Barranco de Tirajana, located in the southeast of Gran Canaria, runs from the highest part of the municipality, the Caldera de Tirajana with its steep walls, to the plains of Juan Grande on the coast. The Barranco de Tirajana can be explored by car or bicycle going up its eastern slope. The suggested route starts from Vecindario, a commercial city in the southeast of Gran Canaria.

Following the signs to Santa Lucia de Tirajana along the GC-500 regional road, once you have crossed the town called Sardina del Sur, you will begin to climb the ravine until you reach the Los Cuchillos road, a winding route but with views of great beauty. Halfway there is the Mirador de Guriete, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the deep ravine. On your right, Ansite Fortress; archaeological site and home of the last Canarian aborigines until their conquest in 1483.

Following the road in the direction of Santa Lucia de Tirajana, those who wish to get to know this site up close can take the turnoff to the left that leads to La Sorrueda. It is recommended to stop at the viewpoint of the Sorrueda dam, where you can enjoy beautiful views of palm groves between stone houses.

Returning to the main road towards Santa Lucia de Tirajana, one kilometer before reaching the town, it is recommended to visit El Ingenio de Santa Lucia, where you can stop at the Ingenio viewpoint and enjoy an unusual view, an oasis of palm trees. and olive trees. In El Ingenio de Santa Lucia, you will have the opportunity to walk its cobbled street and see its centenary Canarian houses on both sides, where every corner could be a source of inspiration for a painter. The more adventurous, if you pay attention to the bottom of the cobbled street, you will hear the sound of water flowing through the ravine. From here, there is a path that goes down to the bottom, you can even enjoy a bath in the existing natural pools.

Returning to the main road towards Santa Lucia de Tirajana, you will arrive in this town in a few minutes. Gastronomy lovers will find the ideal place to have lunch tasting stewed goat meat and veal with potatoes, without forgetting to take a walk through the old town and visit the Church of Santa Lucia and the adjoining gardens. The church was built in 1905 and its shape can be seen from almost anywhere in the Caldera de Tirajana.
