"We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are." The outside world is a reflection of our inside world.
Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.
Eddie Cantor

This is the view of the south face of Camelback Mountain from the north part of Papago Park just south of McDowell Road. I believe the vacant land north of McDowell Road is all part of the National Guard Armory. I am so glad Phoenix secured and preserved the higher elevations or else there would probably be huge mansions on top.

"Camelback Mountain (O'odham: Cew S-wegiom) is a mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The English name is derived from its shape, which resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel.[3] The mountain, a prominent landmark of the Phoenix metropolitan area, is located in the Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area between the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix and the town of Paradise Valley. It is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing.
"Efforts to protect Camelback Mountain as a natural preserve began in the early 1910s. However, by the 1960s, nearly all of the area had been sold to private interests. Federal and state authorities attempted to stop development above the one thousand and six hundred feet level. They failed to halt development and in 1963 efforts to arrange a land exchange failed in the Arizona State legislature. In 1965, United States Senator Barry Goldwater took up the cause and helped to secure the higher elevations against development. The area became a Phoenix city park in 1968.[7]
Geology
"The mountain is composed of a geologic unconformity between two separate rock formations. The higher part of the peak is Precambrian granite (ca. 1.5 billion years old). The head of the camel is predominantly red sedimentary sandstone from the Chattian stage of the Oligocene epoch (ca. 25 million years old).[9]"
I hiked the Double Butte Trail at Papago Park. I've used Papago Butte for climbing and rappeling training, but I considered these trails too easy. I'm getting back into hiking after C.A.B.G. surgery, so easy was good today. I had no idea what to expect today. I used to hike "over and backs" from the Cholla Trailhead to the Echo Canyon Trailhead and back. The Echo Canyon Trailhead is on the north side of the Camel's head. The Cholla Trailhead is on Cholla and Invergordon on the right just out of the frame.
Tonight I drove up the side of Camelback Mountain to get some shots of the sunset over Phoenix. Here's a shot of the Papago Buttes. It was a beautiful sunset today.

About 3 miles east of my home in central Phoenix is the famous Camelback Mountain. This trailhead on the northwest side is very popular and the late afternoon light was wonderful. This is a zoom shot of my friend suertudo. Wonder if he got anything from his efforts...
A quick shot I took as I was scouting locations while schlepping my way up Camelback Mountain with 30lbs of camera gear on my back. If you're going to climb, bring water, even if it's 6PM!
They say when shooting landscape, try shooting in portrait and landscape views.....I would agree with that theory......=]
The most famous natural landmark in Phoenix is Camelback Mountain. The airport is in the middle of the photo.
It's been getting hot in Phoenix (110 F 2 days ago) so i will slowly go into hibernation for the summer. We had a relatively clear day last week after a storm blew through so I went up to South Mountain for some photos.
This image and the one in the comment were taken during taking-off from Sky Harbor airport in Phoenix, Arizona. Looking north, Camelback mountain can be seen in the background to the right. Any wild guess on why the mountain got that name? :)

This is a shot of Camelback Mountain. It doesn't really look like a camel from this angle, this is looking at the head, the hill on the left, and the hump is the hill on the right. This is looking East. To see the camel, you should view this from the North or South. The smaller rock formation on the left side of the left hill is referred to as "The Praying Monk".

Arizona's Praying Monk with a burst of energy from above. The Praying Monk" is a rock formation on the side of the famous Camelback mountain that sits in between Phoenix and Scottsdale Arizona. From the first time I saw this I was always fascinated with it and thought It would make a great spiritual shot with lightning striking.
This is a shot that I worked on for three years to get. I can not tell you how many times I went to my spot on the top side of this mountain and got nothing. This night was one of my most scariest nights chasing lightning. This was the first shot that got a little blown out it was an extreme lightning bolt of energy, I had to push process and added a texture filter and this is what I came up with. Nothing like being on the top of a huge rock with a metal tripod trying to get a shot for three years. This storm circled the mountains and swung around the back side and came back around to me. This was a very exciting night of chasing lightning. After this, I took off and did the chase to north Scottsdale. This is the first one of the five images in this series. Storm season is here, always such an exciting time of year. This will be my 29th season... hope I make it to 30 ;-) Been a lot going on some good and some bad, I'll leave it at that. Cheers! Wishing you all the best.

Another image from my hike. This was on the way down the mountain. It was a single track path, so I got caught hiking down with another group. It is fun, in settings like these, when you are forced into fellowship with random people; the sun setting in the distance, happy conversation and a common goal. Made my evening.
