The staircase was built in the early 1600s to connect the old part of the city of Caltagirone with the new part built in the highest part of the city, but was completed in the second half of the 1800s.

One hundred and forty-two steps forming a staircase about 130 meters long, each single step is decorated with ceramic tiles and a majolica covering is placed in each riser; the decorations take up typical Sicilian motifs ranging from the tenth to the twentieth century, creating a unique scenography. Every year, on 24 and 25 July, on the occasion of the feast of St. James, candles are lit on the steps that illuminate the city, each candle must be placed in the right place because all together they form a particular decoration. The city attends this moment in perfect silence, and it is still a tradition that is handed down from father to son.

This beautiful Music Stage, built in Moorish style, is located inside the Villa Vittorio Emanuele Public Garden in Caltagirone (CT).

This Public Garden, renowned for being one of the largest in Sicily, was built in 1846 by Giovan Battista Filippo Basile, taking the prestigious English Parks as a source of inspiration.

Beautiful paths surrounded by wonderful trees and exotic plants make up the rich vegetation, to which are added splendid ornamental installations, including terracotta vases, Sicilian majolica and the inevitable Caltagirone Ceramics, true excellence of local craftsmanship.

Palazzo Spadaro Libertini is one of the oldest buildings in Caltagirone, rebuilt on a pre-existing sixteenth-century structure.

The Palace is located in the historic center of Caltagirone (CT) recognized as a UNESCO heritage site in 2002, a few steps from the famous staircase of Santa Maria del Monte.

In 1871 Michelangelo Libertini dei Baroni di S. Marco bought most of the building which made it, on the noble floor, his own sumptuous residence which he furnished with white and gold lacquered fixtures and furniture produced in France like damask and Aubusson carpets.

The vaults of the halls were decorated by the best local artists and enriched with paintings by Francesco Vaccaro, belonging to the renowned family of Calatini artists, authors of works present in the churches and museums of Caltagirone up to the Ragusa area.

The doors of the reception rooms are made of glass embellished with splendid paintings depicting exotic animals and flowers that recall the decorations of the vaults in a single inseparable decorative motif that makes the decor of the spaces balanced.

A relatively new building in a style that I'd call Soviet-inspired prefab.

But I like the shapes and the way the light plays around with them.

Could the shapes be inspired by tyres?

I found very little info, not even the architect's name.

Building started in 2018, and it's owned by a company named società Caltagirone.

The Sicilian Baroque, present above all in the eastern area of the island, is among the most expressive and richest art forms in the history of our history, so much so that it has aroused the interest of Unesco, which has declared seven municipalities, between the provinces of Catania, Syracuse and Ragusa.

Modica, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa, Scicli, Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania and Catania.

Palazzolo is among the last towns in the province of Syracuse, before entering the Ragusa area. If you come to Sicily, do not miss its beauties (and those of the other municipalities), both in terms of art and gastronomy. The Palazzolese sausage, the granitas, the pork with sauce are just a small demonstration of the variety of things that this little piece of Sicily can offer. The only drawback is that, on returning home, you will have to go on a diet!

Colorful Sicilian crafts: the famous Moorish heads

The legend of the Sicilian Moorish heads.

Legend has it that in the city of Palermo, particularly in the Arab neighborhood al-Hâlisah (today known as “Kalsa”), there lived, around the year 1100, a young girl. The girl spent her days inside her sumptuous palace, taking care of its plants and flowers. One day, a young and charming Moor passed under the girl's balcony. An exchange of glances is enough to trigger love at first sight. Alas, the young girl did not know that the Moor with whom she had fallen in love was married and had children in the distant lands of the Orient, where he would have returned immediately.

The young girl, blinded by love and jealousy, waited for night to arrive, and while the young man slept, she cut off his head so as to keep it always with her. She made it into a vase where she sowed and watered her plants and flowers with her tears. Passers-by, seeing how luxuriant plants grew in these particular vases in the shape of a Moor's head, asked to have clay vases made by hand with the same features.

This is where the artisanal tradition of Sicilian Moor's heads was born, a tradition which has nourished the creative minds of many Sicilian artisans, notably the artisans of the town of Caltagirone.

We were travelling in the "baroque triangle" of south east Sicily. The towns below Catania was utterly destroyed (with great loss of life) in the earthquake of 1693 and was redeveloped in the baroque style in the early eighteenth century.

"The eight towns in south-eastern Sicily: Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli, were all rebuilt after 1693 on or beside towns existing at the time of the earthquake which took place in that year. They represent a considerable collective undertaking, successfully carried out at a high level of architectural and artistic achievement. Keeping within the late Baroque style of the day, they also depict distinctive innovations in town planning and urban building."

The famous 142-step ceramic-tiled staircase Via Santa Maria del Montea connects Piazza Municipio with the Chiesa Santa Maria del Monte. Numerous small exciting ceramic shops line the staircase.
