Appearance is never the problem in portrait photography.
The problem appears when the photographer stops seeing a person and starts treating the body as something to be corrected, hidden, or worked around. At that moment the image loses honesty — not visually, but humanly. The subject feels this immediately and begins to close themselves off.
A strong portrait can be honest and beautiful at the same time. Honesty does not mean exaggeration or exposure. It means refusing to fight against who a person is. The camera does not need to smooth reality, but it should not dissect it either. Its task is to observe attentively, without distortion, and to tell a story.
What matters in a portrait is not standards or expectations, but the person in front of the lens and the genuine interest the photographer feels toward them. Presence, breathing, attention, and mutual focus are read far more clearly than proportions or body shape.
For a portrait to feel alive, the subject must feel comfortable in front of the camera. This comfort is practical, not abstract: no rush, no judgment, respectful guidance, earned trust, and space to enjoy the process. When a person stops thinking about how they look and simply exists in the moment, the camera records it immediately.
In practice, this is a shift of focus. Instead of searching for angles that “hide,” the photographer looks for contact. Instead of controlling the body, they observe where calm appears. Instead of forcing an image, they leave room for individuality.
Over time, this leads to a simple conclusion: there are no unattractive women. There are only portraits where a person was not truly seen, heard, or allowed to be themselves. When that does not happen, the portrait assembles itself — without struggle, correction, or deception.
