Himalayan Ibex (Capra ibex sibirica) is symbol of arid and rocky mountain of Karakoram, Hindukush and Himalayas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The males have heavy body, large horns, long bears and females are small body small horns.
Himalayan ibex are found at about 3,660 m to over 5,000 m height in Pakistan, in summer but these can be seen at below 2,135 m during snow fall in winter.
Wild goats are animals of mountain habitats. They are very agile and hardy, able to climb on bare rock and survive on sparse vegetation. They can be distinguished from the genus Ovis, which includes sheep, by the presence of scent glands close to the feet, in the groin, and in front of the eyes, and the absence of other facial glands, and by the presence of a beard in the males, and of hairless calluses on the knees of the forelegs.
Macro Mondays: “High Key” theme
Used as an abrasive, often for removing hard or callused skin, pumice is a very light and porous volcanic rock formed when a gas-rich froth of glassy lava solidifies. I guess that’s why some folks associate pumice with music; they call it light rock. ;-)

South America
Another orchid I photographed in Costa Rica is in the first comment section – Huntleya burtii.
Oncidium, abbreviated as Onc. in the horticultural trade, is a genus that contains about 330 species of orchids from the subtribe Oncidiinae of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). As presently conceived (May 2014), it is distributed across much of South America, Central America, Mexico and the West Indies, with one species (O. ensatum) extending into Florida. Common names for plants in this genus include dancing-lady orchid and golden shower orchid.
This genus was first described by Olof Swartz in 1800 with the orchid Oncidium altissimum, which has become the type species. Its name is derived from the Greek word ὀγκος, onkos, meaning "swelling". This refers to the callus at the lower lip.
Most species in the genus are epiphytes (growing on other plants), although some are lithophytes (growing on rocks) or terrestrials (growing in soil). They are widespread from northern Mexico, the Caribbean, and some parts of South Florida to South America. They usually occur in seasonally dry areas. - Wikipedia

The moorhen, it is one of the most frequent inhabitants of our bodies of water. A simple pond of ten square meters is enough for a couple to settle down. And although fearful, she will gladly settle in the pool of the public garden as long as it is surrounded by dense vegetation. it is a dark gray, almost black bird with greenish brown reflections and a white line on the side of the body. Its beak is red with a yellow tip, it is also surmounted by a red frontal callus. When it walks, we notice its long green legs with an orange red mark at the top of the tibia-tarsus and also very long toes which allow it to stay on the floating vegetation. The lateral undertail is white and forms a conspicuous escutcheon. The moorhen nods its tail when walking and its head when swimming. Juveniles are gray-brown, whitish at the neck. The chicks have black down and red beaks. it is a bird which appreciates the vegetal cover of the banks, but which also ventures in open water and on land. He runs on the water before taking off. It is not a gregarious species, except sometimes in winter, but most often only a couple or two are seen. it is a vegetarian species, it consumes aquatic plants, but also willow buds and grasses. This diet is supplemented by the consumption of invertebrates.

Plumeria flowers
are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers yield no nectar, however, and simply trick their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar. Insects or human pollination can help create new varieties of plumeria. Plumeria trees from cross pollinated seeds may show characteristics of the mother tree or their flowers might just have a totally new look.
Plumeria species may be propagated easily by cutting leafless stem tips in spring. Cuttings are allowed to dry at the base before planting in well-drained soil. Cuttings are particularly susceptible to rot in moist soil. One optional method to root cuttings is applying rooting hormone to the clean fresh-cut end to enable callusing. Plumeria cuttings could also be propagated by grafting a cutting to an already rooted system. The Plumeria Society of America lists 368 registered cultivars of Plumeria as of 2009.

A smoky backyard in Chinatown, New York - a place that tells a story of culture, tradition and cohesion. This is where two worlds meet: an American shopkeeper and a Chinese shopkeeper. In this seemingly unassuming black and white photograph, a moment is taken from life that captures the complexity and richness of the Chinatown community.
The backyard serves as an oasis of calm amidst the bustle of Chinatown's streets. A gentle breeze carries the scent of roasted chicken and exotic spices. Sitting on old wooden crates, the American shopkeeper and the Chinese shopkeeper take a well-deserved break from their busy days. The marks of labour are visible on their hands - calluses and scars that bear witness to years of hard work.
“Some people read palms to tell your future, but I read hands to tell your past. Each scar makes a story worth telling. Each callused palm, each cracked knuckle is a missed punch or years in a factory.”

Another week and another animal in distress due to callus human behavior of carelessly throwing garbage everywhere. Last week was a juvenile Peregrine Falcon (left photo) stuck in a plastic chicken wire mesh and this week a Great Blue Heron with a piece of orange safety fence around its neck. The fence has cut into the flesh at the back of the neck (photo in the inset) and not sure how long before the heron succumbs to its injury. The falcon managed to free itself; afterwards I removed the mesh. For the Heron the outcome could be worse. I called municipal animal control folks and they said that they would look into it. Fingers crossed.
Talon caught fish of the evening by an osprey down on the river from my kayak. It is good to be out on the water again after a long winter, although, the river was very treacherous in places. Three times out and I already have kayak calluses, I think I may have over-did it.
BTW- God's (my) loons are back ;-)
If I had my way
I'd cut the calluses off your breaking heart
If I could get past the sternum
Cauterize those wounds with
Every kiss I could give to you
I'm holding your heart in my hand
The reason it still beats
Am I being too cryptic?
Am I being too obscure?
Love kills, romance is dead
And I don't even trust myself
But I love you
And you can pull my wings apart
And pin me down under glass
Until the end of days if it can help you
Discover that we share the same pain
I just hope you write your thesis
Before your subject is dead
No life after death

The mourning rose beetles are 8 to 12 millimeters long. Their body is glossy black and has, in addition to a shaggy, white hair, many small white spots on the wings, the pronotum and the underside of the body. The six spots on the pronotum run in two parallel longitudinal rows on both sides of the middle of the pronotum, on which a longitudinal callus is formed. The upper wings have five raised longitudinal stripes. In older specimens, there are usually no hairs to be found, as these are rubbed off over time.
The name Oncidium is derived from the Greek onkus, meaning “mass” or “pad,” which refers to the fleshy warty callus on the lip of many members of the genus. They are known as dancing lady or dancing doll orchids.

„In the yellow haze of the sun*...“ How glittering it is there. Can you see it? The golden something? I had eagerly swung my pickaxe over and over again. Up and down. I had shaken the strainer diligently and quickly. Back and forth. The deep blisters on my hands had grown into thick calluses, cracked and black. You don't believe how high I could jump in the air despite deep exhaustion when I was finally allowed to impale this fat chunk. „There was a band playing in my head*.“ What luck ;-)

#MacroMondays 2020 / May 11 / #GoldOrSilver / A lucky HMM to everyone!
Macro Mondays, Redux 2022, need to find a photo to one of the themes of 2022. The list of all themes and some more statistics can be found here , www.flickr.com/groups/macromonday/discuss/72157721915254700/
Since there is so much to choose, sharp, Monday 19th September seems to be an obvious choice. I am sure the Hornhauthobel or callus scraper is able to remove something.
Curves, Monday 11th of November seems to 9
Not to forget Reflections, as on Monday 4th. The white as you see it, is mostly the reflection of the soft box on the highly reflective surface
So, and since it’s quite hard to estimate the size, the removable scrapper part is in total approx. 6 x 3 cm. But on display are approx. 2.5 x 1.25 cm.
That doesn’t make sense to estimate 0.5 mm says my engineering mind, but that’s when you split 1 mm.
Other than this, single monolight with a large softbox with an inner and outer white cover to soften the light.
Feel free to leave comments and constructive feedback. No P1/C1 or seen in group and similar.
“With callused hands
i tasted

i discovered

warmest fireplace
in the roughness
of his stubble
the tenderest love.”

While spending a day at the San Diego Zoo, I found this Silverback Gorilla enjoying a breakfast of assorted leaves. It is amazing to me that Gorillas get all their nourishment from a plant based diet.
Here's more than you ever wanted to know about Gorillas:
Gorillas are the largest of all primates and reach physical maturity between 12 and 15 years of age. Males can be between 350 and 450 pounds, almost twice as much as females.
Males stand between 5.5 to 6 feet tall. Females are a bit smaller, standing between 4'7" to 4'11". The males' heads are large and pointed due to the sagittal crest that forms the back of the top of the head. This crest serves as the foundation for attachment of a great number of jaw muscle fibers, which allows for the chewing power needed to process tough vegetation.
The vision and perception gorillas is similar to that of humans. Gorillas have a prominent brow ridge, small, flat ears, and hear about the same as humans. The nose is broad, flat and fleshy. The wrinkles on a gorilla's nose, known as a noseprint, are like human fingerprints, and every individual's noseprint is unique.
Gorillas have 32 teeth, including sharp canines used for defense and breaking through vegetation. Their molars have complicated patterns of cups and ridges that facilitate chewing of tough plant fibers.
Gorillas' faces, hands, and feet are bare, but the rest of their bodies are covered with short, thin hair. Gorilla hands and feet are large, with leathery palms and soles, and broad, flat nails Their hands are very dexterous and can pick up small, delicate objects. Like their hands, their feet have opposable thumbs and toes.
Like all apes, gorillas' arms are longer than their legs--a feature that allows them to walk on all fours. They are called "knuckle-walkers," meaning that they walk on the knuckles of their forelimbs and the soles of their hind limbs. This form of locomotion develops calluses on the knuckles, preserving the sensitivity of the fingertips necessary for manipulating smaller objects.
Gorillas tend to be shy, peaceful creatures; they are not normally aggressive to other animals unless provoked. However, if they are provoked, they can be dangerous. They can demonstrate aggression by charging towards perceived intruders. Typically, they will not actually hit the intruder, but rush past, turn and then charge again.
Dominant males have a distinctive smell that they use to communicate with other troops and to maintain contact with their own troop.
Perhaps the most recognizable behavior performed by gorillas is chest-beating. It is primarily done by male gorillas at the end of a display meant to intimidate intruding males or predators. The sound can be heard for long distances.
Females will chest-beat infrequently; they will typically beat their hands against the insides of their thighs. Chest-beating can also indicate playful behavior, however, especially in the young. Young gorillas play much like humans do, playing tag and doing somersaults.
Western lowland gorillas live in family groups known as troops. These troops can consist of 5 to 30 individuals, although the average size is 11. The group is led by a dominant silverback male and contains several adult females and their young. The females will typically bond with the silverback, but not necessarily with each other. The silverback will remain dominant for as long as he can defeat competing males.
There are several younger, blackback males that remain in the group until they are capable of challenging the silverback. These young males are often driven out of the troop to live a solitary life or to live in a smaller group with other bachelors until they establish their own troops.
If a dominant silverback is displaced, the new dominant male will typically kill the infants in the troop, sending the females prematurely into reproductive cycling. This increases the male's chances of siring offspring, as his time as the dominant male is uncertain. As such, females consider a male's ability to fight paramount to their offspring's survival.
On maturing, females will leave their natal group to join a lone male or another small group. This is vital to prevent inbreeding and to protect the gene pool.
In a troop, the single silverback male will mate with the females, siring all the offspring of the troop. Females generally reach reproductive maturity between 7 and 8 years of age, with males reaching maturity later, around 10 years of age, due to competition.
The potential breeding season is year-round and gestation typically takes 256 days, or about 8.5 months. Labor can last anywhere from one to 4 hours. Babies are usually born singly; twins are rare. Newborns weigh between 3 and 5 pounds and are weaned around 2 to 3 years of age, but can be dependent on their mothers for up to 4 years. The average interval between births for a female gorilla is four to six years.

Trivia
A pheasant-sized, tropical bird found in swamps, riparian forests, and mangroves of the Amazon and the Orinoco basins in South America. Hoatzins are also infamous as "stinkbirds" - due to their gut, they are true folivores (leaf-eaters), they break down tough leaves with microbes in their enlarged crop and esophagus, giving out a smell like manure. This also works like a defense mechanism as the odor puts off predators.
The chicks are born with wing claws for climbing back to the nest - in case they fall off or dive from nests to escape predators.
Appearance wise - they are ungainly flyers, the spiky crest, blue face, red eyes, and a callused breastbone for resting their large digestive crop, they resemble some prehistoric birds.
