So, so retro. Disneyland brings back Caption EO.

The 1986 "you-had-to-be-there" video attraction that solves the universe's problems with H.R. Huffinpuff-style "aliens" and some awesome dancing by the late Micheal Jackson.

From the "LA Times" on February 19, 2010:

Following the success of the “This Is It” concert film, Disney has decided to dust off the 23-year-old music video for a limited engagement at the Anaheim theme park.

The 17-minute “Captain EO” cost an estimated $30 million to make and featured a star-studded list of credits, including executive producer George Lucas, director Francis Ford Coppola and Anjelica Huston as the evil Supreme Leader.

The 3-D movie — featuring lasers, smoke and stars that extend into the audience — tells the story of Captain EO on a mission to deliver a musical gift to a wicked alien queen on a dystopian planet. EO’s rag-tag crew included his sidekick Fuzzbucket, security officer Major Domo and blundering shipmate Hooter.

The return of “Captain EO” presents a perplexing challenge to family-centric Disney: How to market a movie relic starring a controversial character without appearing to capitalize on his demise.

EO’s revival also raises another question for Disneyland: What to do with the 4-D theater after the film’s limited run — bring back the waning “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience” or install a new attraction?

Inside the Santa Monica Senior Center, located near the Pacific Park Pier, on the Strand above the Beach, you can go upstairs and use an actual camera obscura--the housing for the unit is highlighted in my note. We didn't have time to do this and I didn't know it was open to the public until after doing an Interwebs search.

Here is a description from a weblog:

The "ship's wheel" on the right of the table turns the lens turret 360°. Unlike some camera obscura tables, this one does not move up and down to focus but it can be tilted in any direction by grasping it on the edge and pressing down. This can improve the focus in some of the views. We knew both of these adjustments from talking to friends who had visited but there are no instructions posted.
