This is what a legitimate out of control wildfire looks like. The Dixie Fire in northern California is now the largest wildfire in recorded California history. It has been burning for 5 weeks and has destroyed towns, villages, farms and ranches totaling almost 1 million acres.
We have voluntarily evacuated our home twice in the past week, and are currently awaiting instructions from the civil authorities. Haven't been able to post any pics for some time as we have packed and moved so many times, we're completely exhausted and just this evening was even able to plug in my computer in a safe place.

Summer is ending here and the marine layer so prevalent in the summer months is lifting. Our sunsets are now more brilliant but noticeably shorter. The pelicans and seagulls are in abundance most evenings flying "home", wherever that might be.

Next to last in my big birds of North America series is this shot of a California Condor soaring over Marble Canyon in Arizona. A bonus condor soars higher up.
From the Cornell Lab:
Length: 4 ft.
Weight: 21 LBS.
Wingspan: 9 ft.
The California Condor continues its slow road to recovery from near extinction. In 1987 the total population was 27. All 27 were captured and a captive breeding program was initiated. According to the Ventana Wildlife Society, as of December 2022, the total population is 537 of which 336 live in the wild. Lead poisoning continues as a major threat as the condors feed on animals shot with lead ammunition by hunters. Despite the remarkable success of the efforts to save the species, they are still listed as "critically endangered".
I choose to remove the identification tags on my California Condor images. For those interested, this is R1.
Mount Shasta is a volcano located at the southern end of the Cascade Range in Siskiyou County, California. At 14,179 feet, it is the second highest peak in the Cascades and the fifth highest in California. Mount Shasta is not connected to any nearby mountain and dominates the northern California landscape. On a clear winter day snowy Mount Shasta can be seen from the floor of the Central Valley 140 miles (230 km) south. The mountain has attracted the attention of poets, authors, presidents ... and MelRoseJ.
This image was composed while hiking Indian Canyon, near Palm Desert, California. Note the California Bearded Palms.
Now part of the Museum of Man in Balboa Park, San Diego, the California Tower was constructed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.
Like most of the architecture along El Prado in Balboa Park, this structure is visually captivating because of its hybrid of architectural styles and use of color and carvings to delight onlookers. The setting, among palm trees and along the entrance from the Cabrillo Bridge make this one of the most prominent features of the park, and a great visual memory cue for visitors to San Diego.
This is a digitally altered photo of cheerful California poppies blooming in springtime on a bluff overlooking the ocean, given painterly type effects to create a soft piece with the look and feel of a watercolor.
A California Scrub Jay checking out his surroundings, before flying to our seed feeding station. We had four to five inches of snow during the last couple of days. There were at least a 100 birds looking for seed during this WInter event. We spread seed in numerous places on top of the snow, so they could easily have a meal. Photo taken in Camas, Washington.
This wasn't staged. She just happened to come by when I was taking the picture. This is a remote canyon in Southern California.

I have started a blog on my site discussing my switch from DSLR (Canon 90D) to mirrorless (Canon R7) for bird and wildlife photography. It might be useful if you are considering the change to mirrorless, and want to know how the technologies compare.
