I can't recall the spray pond's function, but the twin chimneys in the background spewed black smoke into the air during the milling season. It also was our "welcome home" land-
mark when we went off to college and would drive back to Canlubang for summer vacations. We'd see the chimneys from afar, welcoming us home. The barely discernible mound in the background (upper right) is the pile of "bagasse,"the dried-out pulp of processed sugar cane.

Sometimes I think that children of the poor have more fun than sheltered kids. I came upon this scene where children were free to play and be themselves in a farm-to-market road in Calamba City.
