Calamba Church, is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines. It is located adjacent to Rizal Shrine and is known as the christening site of José Rizal. Jesuit Missionaries in 1757 purchased a big portion of land called Hacienda de San Juan for their missions but the parish was only established in 1779 by the Franciscan Friars upon gaining independence from the parochial church of Cabuyao (formerly known as Tabuco). The stone church was originally built in 1859 but destroyed during the Second World War. The reconstruction of the church of Calamba was headed by Fr. Eliseo Dimaculangan. The original altar was burned in 1862 but immediately rebuilt by Fr. Leoncio Lopez. The church of Calamba is a stone church built under the Baroque style. It has several stained glasses, two of which are in the church entrance depicting St. Dominic and San Lorenzo Ruiz. Other stained windows depicts the seven holy sacraments of the Church such as baptism, reconciliation, confirmation and among others.

Rizal Shrine in Calamba is a reconstruction of the ancestral home of Calamba’s greatest son, Dr. José P. Rizal. The original house was destroyed during World War II, and through Executive Order No. 145 by President Elpidio Quirino, the house was restored through the supervision of National Artist Juan Nakpil. The only thing original in the structure is the flooring, which was dug up completely during construction. The shrine was then inaugurated in 1950.

Today, the shrine serves as a museum containing memorabilias of Rizal’s earlier childhood. On the grounds is a statue of the boy Rizal and his pet dog. The lot is also where Rizal’s parents remains were transferred.

The decision to focus on Rizal’s childhood was made by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as well as the National Centennial Commission in time for the commemoration of the country’s 100 years of independence in 1998.

During the time of Rizal, the dining room was called comedor, a word borrowed from the Spanish. If you can recall, in those days, there were Filipinos who could speak Spanish such as the Mercado Family. Filipinos show respect for the table by good eating manners. Another way is by inviting others to partake of the fare, even when it is modest and simple.
