The Rizal House in the City of Calamba is a reproduction of the original Spanish Colonial-style, two-storey house where Jose P. Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines was born on June 19, 1861. The original Rizal ancestral house took two years for Francisco Mercado, Rizal's father to built. The Spanish authorities confiscated the house in 1891. Paciano Rizal, brother of Jose P. Rizal reoccupied the house during the Philippine Revolution, but lost it again to the friars. It was subsequently sold, destroyed in World War II and was finally demolished. By Executive Order of President Elpidio Quirino, a replica of the birthplace of Jose Rizal commenced with funds mainly contributed by school children in the Philippines and was supervised by Architect Juan F. Nakpil in 1949. As a reconstruction of the original house, the house was a faithful reconstruction of the original house which occupies the same area and the same materials. The building was inaugurated on June 19, 1950 and served as repository of Rizal's memorabilia. The Rizal Shrine is a typical bahay na bato for upper-class Filipinos built during the Spanish Colonial era. The lower portion is made of stone and bricks while the upper part consists of hard wood. It has sliding windows made out of capiz shells. The outside wall is painted in green (originally white) and the roof is made of red tiles.
The name of the city comes from a legend that during the early time of the Spanish period in the country, two "guardias civil" or soldiers were lost and passing through what is now Calamba. The soldiers met a young lady who came from a river carrying a jar of water and a wooden stove. The soldiers unwittingly in Spanish language and in authoritative tone, to conceal the fact that they were lost, asked the local maiden the name of the place they were in. The lady, who speaks only her native language, naturally thought she was being interrogated about what she was carrying and nervously uttered "kalan-banga", meaning "clay stove" (kalan) and "water jar" (banga). Because the Spaniards could not pronounce it properly, the town has been called Calamba supposedly since then. This legend is immortalized with a large concrete water jar erected in the city plaza with the names of the city's barangays written on its surface. It is considered the World's Biggest "Claypot". Calamba Church, is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines. It is located adjacent to Rizal Shrine and is known as the christening site of José Rizal. Jesuit Missionaries in 1757 purchased a big portion of land called Hacienda de San Juan for their missions but the parish was only established in 1779 by the Franciscan Friars upon gaining independence from the parochial church of Cabuyao (formerly known as Tabuco). The stone church was originally built in 1859 but destroyed during the Second World War. The reconstruction of the church of Calamba was headed by Fr. Eliseo Dimaculangan. The original altar was burned in 1862 but immediately rebuilt by Fr. Leoncio Lopez. The church of Calamba is a stone church built under the Baroque style. It has several stained glasses, two of which are in the church entrance depicting St. Dominic and San Lorenzo Ruiz. Other stained windows depicts the seven holy sacraments of the Church such as baptism, reconciliation, confirmation and among others.
