The truth is I love being alive. And I love feeling free. So if I can't have those things then I feel like a caged animal and I'd rather not be in a cage. I'd rather be dead. And it's real simple. And I think it's not that uncommon.

We came across this lion in a small zoo in Lopburi, where the wild animals do not have large enclosures. This lion looked so defeated, it broke my heart to see him in the cement cage.

From a bikini in my last post, back to a jacket and leggings in this one. Molly is sure doing a lot of travelling when we all are supposed to be locked down inside. She is however keeping her proper social distance, only having me close by to take her pictures! The coat and dress were a gift today, and she’s just not giving up on St. Patrick’s Day colors yet!

Switchfoot

This reflection reminded me of a cage, which in turn reminded me of one of my fave songs by Switchfoot, called Gone. I think we build most of our own cages, because boundaries make us feel safe. No risk involved, and, before you know it, we're trapped in our self-made gaols. Yes, that's gaols, not goals, though, it is possible to become enslaved to our goals, to the exclusion of that which may be more important. Philosophizing done. Hope you made it this far. lol

There’s a magical place where people go to let their caged birds sing and socialize. It's called Kebun Baru Bird Singing Club in Singapore.

A little caged monkey sits and stares outside his cage at the onlookers at Bangkok Zoo.

You could see it in the eyes, that they are missing the most important thing; not food, not medication, but freedom.

Caged Bird

BY MAYA ANGELOU

A free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wing

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage

can seldom see through

his bars of rage

his wings are clipped and

his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn

and he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.
