In photographing this Connecticut State Trooper's hat, a symbol of authority to some; service and sacrifice to others; honor and duty to others still, with the dignity and reverence befitting the sacrifice that the 21 fallen State Troopers have made since 1929, I chose dramatic side lighting with dark background. The space to the right can hold text to be chosen at a later time.
Strobist info: three light set up:
SB28 behind the hat to the right providing the rim lighting. It lights the edge of the brim and the right side of the hat crown. SB900 in an Apollo softbox camera right about 3 feet away, feathered to create the reflection in the hat pin letters and blue band, SB600 camera Left, feathered to add a hint of lighting to the cords and the shadow side (left) of the hat . A small black gobo was used to block the back lighting from creating lens flare.
