'REST'

After viewing the ‘Stenburg Brothers’ work I compared it to my own work, realizing the similarities we both share in the art that we have both created. The brother’s work is very anti political. What is extraordinary about the Stenberg’s' posters, beyond their amazingly expressive and dynamic use of color, composition and typography, which has rarely been equaled, is that, though they look like photomontage they are actually almost entirely illustration. The ever-inventive Stenberg’s had constructed a prototype overhead projector which would allow them to project filmstrips onto their posters and to copy and embellish faces and bodies (as well as to distort them if necessary), hence their photorealist look. This gave their posters a consistency and quality that would have not been possible to achieve, due to the limitations of the printing processes available at the time, by cutting and pasting photographs onto paper.

The Stenberg brother’s use of colour and composition is far more sophisticated the layering of not only colour but meanings suggest an audience that needs a certain level of education is needed to understand and respond to their work. Posters are an effective way to reach a mass audience. Displayed on buildings in streets transport systems etc. At first the Stenberg brothers supported to political revolutionary ideals of Russia’s communist government, later they joined with other artists to turn the power of the poster to suit an anti regime theme.

I co-ran this place, the metal workshop at Central St. Martins college in London, from '99 to '03. I miss it, and being able to use it, so much.

Even more, I miss Rory, the senior technician there, who died 3 years ago today, April 29, 2005.

The last fashion illustration example; this is the illustration of my chosen final design for first year ‘Sustainable Fashion’ project, based on given ‘The Dark Side’ theme. I took this design to manufacture; challenging myself to create a functional fitted newspaper bodice.
