The digital economy is one of the new 21st century issues that negotiators from the 12 countries participating in Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) talks are hammering out in their discussions. They are working to ensure information flows, consumer protection, authentication of electronic transactions, and fair customs duties in the environment.
The key indicator for whether the United States will be economically engaged in the Asia Pacific region this year will be the completion of the TPP. Leadership on trade and the economic aspect of United States involvement in the region has never been more important.
CSIS is committed to exploring and promoting the policy dynamic surrounding these issues through the continuation of its 2012 TPP Initiative. As a continuing part of the 2013 Trans-Pacific Partnership Speaker Series, CSIS is proud to be hosting a morning conference on key digital economy issues that will be included and addressed in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Recent announcements by President Obama while travelling in Africa signal a paradigm shift in U.S.-Africa engagement, with greater priority given to economic growth, trade and investment, and new forms of partnership with a “continent that is on the move.” The president announced a new U.S. initiative while in Tanzania—“Power Africa”—targeting increased access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable power in Africa. The president’s announcement offers an opportunity to tackle a long-standing barrier to development and growth in Africa, as well as a major stumbling block for potential U.S. investors.
Please join CSIS for a discussion of the likely impact of the president’s trip in boosting private-sector engagement in Africa, the parameters and potential of the Power Africa initiative, and critical next steps by the administration, Congress, private-sector players, and African governments to maximize its impact. The panel will offer its views on the opportunity for the private and public sectors to coordinate their strategies and leverage their strength to achieve measurable growth in power accessibility in Africa.
This event is part of CSIS’s ongoing “Chevron Forum on Development” series, which seeks to highlight innovative approaches to global development.
This should be a timely and informative discussion.

Among the many atrocities of the Syrian civil war, the use of chemical weapons stands out as particularly brutal. The Assad regime's accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention last year and the subsequent destruction of its declared chemical arsenal has helped reduce the risk of chemical weapons use again in that region. Destroying that arsenal quickly, securely and safely in a war-torn country, however, presented huge challenges. The U.S. role in mobilizing and coordinating the international response, as well as in the operational destruction of hundreds of tons of dangerous chemicals aboard the U.S. M/V Cape Ray, was a key factor in the success of the operation.
Please join us on September 10th as we look at how the United States helped rid Syria of chemical weapons and the lessons learned.
Featuring:
Mr. Thomas Countryman
Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation
Ms. Laura Holgate
Senior Director, WMD Terrorism & Threat Reduction at the National Security Council
Ms. Jennifer Smith
Director, Threat Reduction Program Oversight, U.S. Department of Defense

Young people have historically been at the forefront of social and political movements. In Kenya, youth make up nearly 30% of the population, and are a source of great promise. Yet fueled by disenfranchisement, inequity, and rampant unemployment, youth were at the center of the violence following the 2007 Presidential elections. To begin to address the challenge of disaffected youth, USAID initiated its largest-ever youth program – Yes Youth Can!. Implemented by Mercy Corps and led by Kenyan youth, the Yes Youth Can! project is forging new ground in understanding and advancing youth inclusive democracy and governance.
Following the March 4th elections, please join us for a timely conversation on project, policy and comparative experiences, perspectives and lessons learned from Kenya in building youth inclusive democracies.
