The way the light has illuminated the top bud kind of reminds me of one of these human chakra diagrams where the crown chakra of enlightenment - the Sahasrara, is lit up. It is normally depicted with a lotus flower, but I think this one does a nice impression. Perhaps on some level, the fact it has thorns adds rather than detracts.....
It's a bit of a stretch I know, I was tempted to put a star burst onit but managed some self restraint, not bad for an old fool on this day.
Berberis Aurea.
That’s James who led me to this hidden spot to view a rock arch at Garrapata State Park. Sitting on the cliff’s edge while juggling 2 cameras (not visible), he is much braver than me…
Happy Friday dear friends!

Tangara xanthocephala
(Saffron-crowned Tanager / Tángara coronada)
Saffron-crowned Tanager is a brightly colored tanager with a distinctive yellow head. This species occurs through the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia, and occupies humid montane forests and secondary woodlands.
Due to human destruction of habitat, it is hypothesized that the population numbers are decreasing. Like most Tangara tanagers, the Saffron-crowned is sexually monomorphic.

Wikipedia: The white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) is a species of passerine bird native to North America. A medium-sized member of the New World sparrow family, this species is marked by a grey face and black and white streaking on the upper head. It breeds in brushy areas in the taiga and tundra of the northernmost parts of the continent and in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific coast. While southerly populations in the Rocky Mountains and coast are largely resident, the breeding populations of the northerly part of its range are migratory and can be found as wintering or passage visitors through most of North America south to central Mexico.

Saw this Ruby-crowned kinglet in with a flock of bushtits in a bush next to me. The first I've seen one of these beauties in quite some time!
Trees with white frozen crowns on my favourite rural road during the morning sun. The trees were still covered by the frozen mist of the day before. But at the end of the afternoon all was melted. Purmerland, 2017.
Again, I would like to thank everyone for your support, views, faves and comments!
They have a highly audible song for such a small bird. It took several minutes before I could locate him as he sang a few phrases from one place, and then started again in another location. Luckily for me, he flew down to an open perch very close where he sang and raised his crown.
It was a bright overcast backlight situation. I was close enough to get detail though, and I really like the way those red crown feathers were lighted from behind.
If you have never heard its song, Check the link below.

Compare to www.flickr.com/photos/terry_frederic/28077958752/
Both were stitched photos taken from the same location but I used a longer lens. Mine emphasizes Crown Point and Beacon Rock. Terry's version shows more of the sky and trees in the foreground. You need to think about what you want to emphasize and choose a wider focal length to show more of the sky and foreground or a longer one to show more of the center of the photo. Funny how the human eye does these adjustments for us seamlessly.
This Golden-Crowned Sparrow was one among a fairly good sized group of house finches and a few juncos. Always happy to see these little ones, too!

Melanerpes rubricapillus rubricapillus
(Red-crowned woodpecker / Carpintero habado)
The red-crowned woodpecker (Melanerpes rubricapillus) is a resident breeding bird from southwestern Costa Rica south to Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas and Tobago.
The male has a red crown patch and nape. The female has a buff crown and duller nape. Immature birds are duller, particularly in the red areas of the head and neck.
This woodpecker occurs in forests and semi-open woodland and cultivation. Red-crowned woodpeckers feed on insects, but will take fruit.
