Going up-up-up. Overlooking the village to the south, the old Saint-Hadelin hermitage seems to watch over the area. Two storeys tall, it dates from the 19th century.

I've always loved this area between Dupont and Bloor, between Lansdowne and Dundas. The area had a lot of interesting old small industries and commercial businesses, and then rapidly drops into the wealthy High Park & Roncy area. That's the crossways down there on Bloor and Chairtex closer to the bridge I'm on. 10 years on there is a new condo, and parts of the new bike path are closed again, but at least the old bridge is still there, for now.

The Crossways mixed-use residential/commercial complex in Toronto's west end, built in 1974. The complex consists of twin towers at 29-storeys (seen here from the north) and a mall located in the base of one of the podiums. Designed by architects Webb Zerafa Menkès Housden Partnership and built by Consolidated Building Corporation. The building has generated criticism for its uninspiring appearance.

Crossways, the Stuyvesant and Marion Graves Anthon Fish House (1896-98). Crossways Mansion.

Fish (1851-1923) was a director of the Illinois Central Railroad and served as its president from 1887 to 1907. Mrs Fish (1855-1916), known as Mamie, a leader, albeit slightly eccentric, in New York and Newport society, ended the Newport summer season each August with her Harvest Festival Ball, held in this house. She also concocted more unusual entertainments, including a dinner for dogs and a ball at which the guest of honour was a monkey.

In the second quarter of the 20th century, this was the summer house of Ella Morris de Peyster (1881-1957), a collector of 18th-century French decorative arts, many pieces of which were bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
