We live in demanding times. Seen in a shop in Ghent, the choice between face-only, with a demanding expression, or head-less in the distance, or ... face-less in the further distance. Clearly the first option is the best, everyone his/her own identifying face with choices tailor-made for each to consume less rather than more (In Dutch: ‘consuminderen’ instead of ‘consumeren’).... But are we good enough on the dance floor of the poly-crises to step backwards?

Une grave crise démographique touche l’Europe au 14e siècle. La guerre, la famine et la Peste noire débarquée au sud de la France dès 1347 déciment la population. La ville de Rouen se voit également très lourdement impactée.

Dans la paroisse très peuplée de Saint-Maclou, le cimetière qui jouxte l’église devient bientôt trop petit pour accueillir les défunts. Ainsi, au milieu du 14e siècle, un nouveau cimetière est créé. Il devient le « grand aître », différencié du « petit aître » de l’église. Au Moyen âge, la population utilise pour désigner un cimetière, les termes d’ « aître » ou de « charnier ». Le terme « cimetière » est lui réservé au langage savant des ecclésiastiques.

Ce mot d’ancien français est issu du latin atrium. A l’époque romaine, il désigne la cour intérieure d’une maison entourée d’une galerie soutenue de colonnes. Au fil du temps, le terme atrium va être utilisé pour désigner la cour d’une église qui devient progressivement un cimetière.

De nouvelles vagues d’épidémies de peste touchent la ville de Rouen au cours du 15e et surtout du 16e siècle. Le nouvel aître se révèle alors, malgré de nombreux agrandissements de terrain tout au long du 15e siècle, une nouvelle fois trop petit pour faire face à la grande mortalité des habitants de la paroisse Saint-Maclou.

Ainsi, en 1526, la paroisse décide de construire autour du terrain du cimetière trois galeries destinées à faire office d’ossuaire. Afin de dégager de la place pour de nouvelles inhumations, les os d’anciens morts sont déterrés et placés dans ces galeries, au niveau des greniers, certainement bien ventilés et à la vue de tous. Ces galeries sont enrichies sur les parties en bois et en pierre d’un riche décor macabre.

 

A serious demographic crisis hit Europe in the 14th century. War, famine and the Black Death that arrived in the south of France in 1347 decimated the population. The city of Rouen was also heavily impacted.

In the densely populated parish of Saint-Maclou, the cemetery next to the church soon became too small to accommodate the deceased. Thus, in the middle of the 14th century, a new cemetery was created. It became the "grand aître", differentiated from the "petit aître" of the church. In the Middle Ages, the population used the terms "aître" or "charnier" to designate a cemetery. The term "cemetery" was reserved for the learned language of ecclesiastics.

This Old French word comes from the Latin atrium. In Roman times, it designated the inner courtyard of a house surrounded by a gallery supported by columns. Over time, the term atrium was used to designate the courtyard of a church that gradually became a cemetery.

New waves of plague epidemics hit the city of Rouen during the 15th and especially the 16th century. The new atrium then proved, despite numerous land extensions throughout the 15th century, once again too small to cope with the high mortality rate of the inhabitants of the parish of Saint-Maclou.

Thus, in 1526, the parish decided to build three galleries around the cemetery land intended to serve as an ossuary. In order to free up space for new burials, the bones of former dead were dug up and placed in these galleries, at the level of the attics, certainly well ventilated and in full view of all. These galleries were enriched on the wooden and stone parts with a rich macabre decoration.

This is a repost of a 365 day self portrait challenge in which I combine a self portrait and an abstract painting I did of my family. The painting was done in a class in which I was asked to paint a self portrait, in those days I was rather shy so asked if I could do myself with my family and luckily for me my request was accepted.

 

By now you will all know the importance I put upon family it is the basis for a good life. A strong and close-knit family lasts a lifetime. I brought up my children to know that they can always rely on us parents, but they also had to learn the importance upon being able to rely upon one another as well, happily they learned this lesson successfully and they all apply it today and I am sure that they always will.

Firenze is really a beautiful and astounding place to visit and doing street photography.

La fotografía muestra el vallado hecho de viejas traviesas de ferrocarril, que delimita una de las orillas de la laguna salada de Pétrola, y al que, por razones obvias, yo metafóricamente llamo "el peine de la laguna" :-)

Qualidade, né?

Depuis plusieurs semaines, des données chiffrées relatives à l’économie chinoise, toutes négatives, s’accumulent !

 

Ces indicateurs, qui concernent une grave crise du secteur clé de l’immobilier, un chômage des jeunes en forte hausse ou l’entrée de la Chine en déflation, montrent clairement que, côté croissance, Pékin n’est pas à la fête !

 

Or ces failles sont surtout la conséquence de choix politiques, voire idéologiques, posés par le pouvoir chinois …

 

Sur le plan financier, l’économie chinoise fonctionne encore beaucoup en circuit fermé !

 

Mais ces difficultés chinoises sont aussi un avertissement pour de nombreuses entreprises du reste du monde : la Chine n’est probablement plus l’eldorado auquel ils croyaient…

 

Alors que, pendant des années, elles se sont parfois aveuglément précipitées en Chine, cette crise les oblige à réfléchir à d’autres solutions, à d’autres partenariats …

 

L’avenir nous dira comment les choses évolueront …...... à suivre donc !

For several weeks, figures relating to the Chinese economy, all negative, have been piling up !

 

These indicators, which relate to a serious crisis in the key real estate sector, sharply rising youth unemployment or China's entry into deflation, clearly show that, on the growth side, Beijing is not celebrating!

 

However, these flaws are above all the consequence of political, even ideological, choices made by the Chinese authorities...

 

Financially, the Chinese economy still operates largely in a closed circuit !

 

But these Chinese difficulties are also a warning for many companies in the rest of the world: China is probably no longer the El Dorado they believed in...

 

While for years they have sometimes blindly rushed to China, this crisis forces them to think about other solutions, other partnerships...

 

The future will tell us how things will evolve... to be continued !

Gemeint ist mit dem Titel die Portugiesische Galeere, die einzige Art aus der Gattung der Seeblasen (Physalia), die zu den Staatsquallen (Siphonophorae) gezählt wird. Diese hat tatsächlich große Ähnlichkeit mit den Glasobjekten (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portugiesische_Galeere). Zu dem Kunstwerk heißt es in dem begleitenden Text: "Zwischen Ästhetik, Form und Farbe regt die Installation "Man of War" zum Nachdenken über unseren aktuellen kollektiven Status an und darüber, was heute, nach dem gläsernen Menschen, noch bedeutet, ein Individuum zu sein. Um angresichts der universellen Krisen eine aktivere Vision der Zukunft zhu entwerfen, müssen Handlungnen von nachhaltiger Kollektivität entwickel werden: das Konzept der Vielfalt stärker annehmen und über ihre Potentiale nachdenken - zum Beispiel, wie mehrere Wesensformen einen Körper bewohnen und als eine Einheit agieren können. "Man-of-War" ist genau das, ein quallenartiges Lebewesen, das aus mehreren Wesen besteht, die in einem Körper vereint sind."

 

The title refers to the Portuguese man o' war, the only species in the genus Physalia that is categorised as a colonial organism (Siphonophorae). It is indeed very similar to the glass objects (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Portuguese_Man-O-War_(Physalia_physalis).jpg). The accompanying text on the artwork states: ‘Between aesthetics, form and colour, the installation “Man of War” encourages us to reflect on our current collective status and what it still means to be an individual today, in an era in which due to data collecting, man is getting more and more transparent. In order to create a more active vision of the future in the face of universal crises, actions of sustainable collectivity must be developed: embracing the concept of diversity more fully and reflecting on its potential - for example, how multiple beings can inhabit one body and act as one. ‘Man-of-War’ is exactly that, a jellyfish-like creature made up of multiple beings united in one body.’

 

"Gläsern" ist der Titel einer Ausstellung verschiedener Künstler im Schloss Biesdorf vom 10. März bis 13. April 2025. Es geht um Glas in verschiedenster Hinsicht, Glas als Mittel, Licht farblich abzuwandeln, um gläserne Gegenstände aller Art als Unterart der Bildhauerei, um die Darstellung von Glas in Gemälden oder Videos.

 

‘Made of Glass’ is the title of an exhibition by various artists at Biesdorf Manor from 10 March to 13 April 2025, which focuses on glass in a variety of ways, glass as a means of changing the colour of light, glass objects of all kinds as a subspecies of sculpture, and the depiction of glass in paintings or videos.

This lunar photograph was taken when the sun had already set on half of Mare Crisium (Sea of Crises). The smooth dark floor of this mare is the result of basaltic flows that covered a two billion year old impact basin. The three craters that can be seen on the mare floor (from the bottom upwards) are named Swift, Peirce and Picard. They are new arrivals to the mare. Mare Crisium has a surface area of 176,000 sq. km (about the size of Great Britain) and its surrounding mountains (formed from the ejecta of the original impact) rises 4.4 km from the mare’s floor. Widespread, common, and conspicuous, the Killdeer calls its name as it flies over farmland and other open country. Like other members of the plover family, this species is often found at the water's edge, but it also lives in pastures and fields far from water. At times, it nests on gravel roofs or on lawns. Many a person has been fooled by the bird's "broken-wing" act, in which it flutters along the ground in a show of injury, luring intruders away from its nest.

 

The Killdeer breeds from Newfoundland, the south rim of

Hudson Bay, and the southern Yukon and Northwest

Territories south to central Mexico and the Gulf coast.

 

When this one saw me it squatted and sat perfectly still like a Wilson's Snipe would do, instead of running off and then flying like a Killdeer would most often do! I found a Wilson's Snipe not 50ft from it! Maybe it thought it was a snipe instead of a Killdeer! (smile)

I found it along Peavine Road in Osceola County, Florida.
