I have a little tutorial up on the Crate Paper blog on using your chipboard and stickers to create journaling lines for cards or layouts. I used Crate Paper on these 2 cards and Papertrey Ink stamps for the sentiments. Thanks for looking! Danielle

A plastic crate, probably for vegetables

This OK brand apple crate label was used by the Chelan Falls Cold Storage Company of Chelan Falls, Washington during the early 20th century. The lithographed green label has a large central illustration of a red apple on its branch. Chelan Falls is part of the Wenatchee Valley region that claimed to be the “Apple Capital of the World.”

Wooden Crates Transformed

1) Buy 3 unpainted wooden crates ($9.95 Walmart for a 9x12x18 inch crate)

2) stain crates with Ebony (or stain of choice)

3)Let dry overnight

4) slap on 1 layer of acrylic paint (my color is: Meandering Dusty Lane- to normal people that would be TAN)

5) let dry

6) using the printer copy/wax paper transfer method put images on the ends of the crates (I used simple black ink wine labels-6 total I didn't want my ends to match)

6.5) I also stamped a number on the sides and bottoms of my crates but you can't see those in the photos

7) sand and scuff various edges and areas with sandpaper

8) clean off sanding dust

9) take outside and spray with clear paint

10) let dry

11) find somewhere in the house to display the crate- stack and fill as you need them. (Mine are being used as a bookshelf in my bedroom.)

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld: furniture maker, designer and architect. He was born on 24 June 1888 and died on 26 June 1964. Despite his several dozens pieces of furniture, buildings and other designs, Rietveld is usually associated with one chair from 1918 and one house from 1924; his famous Red-Blue chair and the Rietveld-Schröder house. But Rietveld left behind an oeuvre which is even more comprehensive: no fewer than 215 furniture designs such as chairs, cabinets and tables, 232 designs for buildings and 240 other designs. Sometimes it concerns tangible furniture, single copies or prototypes, while only sketches or drafts are available for other models.

Crate chair (1934) - His ideology that beauty should be accessible and obtainable for everyone and that simplicity is the hallmark of true design, was practised by Gerrit Rietveld in the thirties when designing his Crate furniture. At the time many products were packaged in crates in order to be shipped safely; after use crates were usually discarded. Rietveld thought this was a shame as quality base materials were used. In the thirties Europe was in the midst of a deep economic crisis; a time in which nothing was discarded. In 1934 Gerrit Rietveld made his first chair constructed of ‘crate wood’. Later in this ‘line’ other chairs, benches, tables and wardrobes followed. Partially because of the choice of base material everybody should be able to afford crate furniture, was Rietveld’s thought. Last Monday Mr Chiots and I stopped by a local orchard to buy some apples to make applesauce & apple butter. It’s a great little orchard that is as organic as you can get and still have apples. They use the bare minimum of treatments on their trees. They also try to keep their business small and do things the way they’ve always done it. It’s such a cute little place, when you drive up you’re greeted by 5 dogs that are very happy to see you.

All the apples are stacked under a huge tree beside their house. The owner explained to us that he could buy a second cooler, but then he’d have higher electric bills and then he would have to work more. So he just stores his apples outside and sells what he can before they all go bad.

They had cats patrolling the crates the crates for mice and I’m sure the dogs kept the deer, opossums and raccoons away.

I bought this crate a while back here in the Netherlands, but never got round to posting it. It doesn't have any printing or paint, but it has all the characteristics of a wooden storage crate. It was filled with bricks, but mostly a mixture of bricks from the 60s and 70s, including some blue rails, so no indication of (any) original content there. Also notice the two grooves on the side.

This was not a custom item, it was professionally made. The bottom is made of masonry wood (if that's the correct term).

Any ideas?

Jessi the Wonder Dog is good, even when she’s bad! She only has to hear the words, “What did you do?” and she goes into her crate for self-punishment, which is weird, because we’ve never used her crate as punishment, ever! In reality, I think it’s like her safe zone, and she goes there to escape her deed and perhaps our ire. I guess Jessi is a little bit spoiled, in that, we decided when we adopted her that she was an innocent, and anything she did was not her fault, but our fault for not educating her that it was out of bounds. We are inspired and engaged dog owners, no corporal punishment EVER, and we love Jessi so much. Jessi is almost 6 now, and she has been educated that doing what she did today (getting in the pantry, retrieving anything, much less a bag of instant oatmeal, taking it in the living room, opening it and whipping it around the room) is out of bounds.

When she does something like that now, I think it’s a bit on purpose to teach us a lesson about leaving her alone all day that day. I ritually give her a couple of treats before I leave for work, and if I forget…there is a higher chance she will get a loaf of bread off the counter (something she would ignore for months), or similar, and tear it up in the middle of the living room at some point before I return. I rarely forget, so obviously she has trained me as well. My husband will tell you however, that it’s not about the treats, it’s about whether I say goodbye to her. He says that when I’ve given her treats, but forgot to say “Goodbye Jessi girl, have a good day, mama loves you”, she acts forlorn. He thinks those are the times we end up with oatmeal, or panko bread crumbs, or something else on the floor that she’s ignored before. I know I gave her the treat-ta treat-tas, so I must have forgotten the goodbye. Okay, I’m trained, 2 chicken jerkys, 1 biscuit, 1 dentagreen bone, and don’t forget to say goodbye! I love my dog, so I can handle that agenda. Hugs and thanks for viewing! =o)
