Hepatic Tanager is the most widely distributed Piranga tanager, ranging from the southwest United States south to northern Argentina. Its English name is based on the liver-red color of the adult male from the northern part of the species' range; however, its scientific name, flava, meaning "yellow," derives from the original description, which is based on a female from Paraguay. These names reflect both a characteristic of the genus Piranga, marked sexual dichromatism, and the broad range of coloration, habitat, and behavior encompassed within the Hepatic Tanager as currently recognized.
Even though the Hepatic Tanager is currently considered one species, much evidence, including a recent study of molecular genetics, indicates that up to 3 species could be recognized, corresponding to the 3 groups of subspecies combined long ago. These groups and their respective species names are the Hepatic Tanager (P. hepatica) of montane pine-oak forests from the southwestern United States to Nicaragua, the Tooth-billed Tanager (P. lutea) of forest edges in foothills and mountains from Costa Rica to northern and western South America, and the Red Tanager (P. flava) of open woodlands of eastern and southeastern South America.

On July 23, 2019 I concentrated once again on the rerouters on the KBS 951, which took the way over the Berchtesgadener Land and the Chiemgau due to the closure of the Passauerbahn. Shortly after sunrise I was able to photograph the 193 810 of the Rurtalbahn with the empty cartransport train DGS 45985 from Bremerhaven to Hegyeshalom near Niederstraß. By this rerouting action the locomotive named Salzburg came actually through the corresponding region. This does not happen regularly.

The Palazzo dei Consoli is a Gothic architecture, civic building in the historic center of Gubbio, region of Umbria, Italy. Construction took place during 1332–1349 under design by Angelo da Orvieto; the palace was built on a large platform built against the hillside and looming over the town below.
The palace has a square plan, and sits above a terrace corresponding to the building's lower floors. Across the piazza is the Palazzo Pretorio, Gubbio, meant to house a prefecture for the town. The present structures are a jarring mix of baroque (red brick L-shaped palace to the North) and the unfinished 14th-century taller white stone building with asymmetric doors and windows. It is asserted that both the Consoli and Pretorio palaces were designed by the same architect.
To the North of the Piazza Grande is the massive Neoclassical, brick Palazzo Ranghiasci-Brancaleoni, now a hotel.
Lucatelli documents that construction costs for the palace based on municipal documents totaled 16,336 Lire from Ravenna, which in 1888 the author calculated was the equivalent of 643 thousand Italian Lira.
The façade on the square is made with white limestone, now tinted with age. Pilasters (shallow buttresses) divide the first floor facade into thirds. The ground floor has a central massive round-arched portal flanked with mullioned windows. In the upper part of the facade, the windows are placed in couples separated by lesenes. Above them are the merlons, supported by a frieze of ogival arches. A square campanile and a narrow loggia facing the town and valley to the South, rising nearly 100 meters from the ground.
The entrance portal is accessed by an elegant arched stone staircase from the grand plaza to the to the arengo, a big hall with barrel vaults that, in the communal age, housed the citizens' meeting. A hemi-circle (fan shape) of stone stairs leads to the solid stone bridge staircase, that leads up to balcony overlooking the square. The pillars at the base of the arch have a four mountain symbol, surmounted by an iron lily, a heraldic symbol of Gubbio also seen in the fountain before the Palazzo del Bargello down Via de Consoli street.
Yesterday I was once again in Imperia on a photo tour. The sun was shining brightly, which cast corresponding shadows. Walls, lanterns, niches and corners are always worthwhile objects, especially when their 3D structure is emphasised with strong shadows.

Barbara, the daughter of a rich pagan named Dioscorus, was carefully guarded by her father who kept her locked up in a tower in order to preserve her from the outside world. Having secretly become a Christian, she rejected an offer of marriage that she received through her father.
In Germany, Saint Barbara is revered as a patron saint of miners and in extension, the geosciences in general, including the tunneling industry.

Regno Unito, Londra, City of London, Primavera 2019
The City of London is a district of Greater London. The City constituted most of London from its settlement by the Romans in the 1st century AD to the Middle Ages, but the conurbation has since grown far beyond its borders. It is now only a tiny part of the metropolis, though it remains a notable part of central London. It is often referred to as the City or the Square Mile, as it is just over one square mile (2.90 km2) in area. The term London now refers to a much larger conurbation roughly corresponding to the London region, which is also known as the Greater London administrative area, of 32 boroughs (including the City of Westminster), in addition to the City of London. The City is today a major business and financial centre, ranking as the leading centre of global finance. The City has a resident population of about 7,000 but over 300,000 people commute everyday to work there.

The Old Town (Basque: Parte Zaharra, sometimes Alde Zaharra) is the area corresponding to the historic center of the city of San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain. Located within the Centro district, its boundaries correspond to those of the old walled city of San Sebastián. It is located at the foot of Mount Urgull and includes the city's port. It has a total of 6,083 registered inhabitants.
This brilliant pink tree in the Boston public garden was attracting crowds! I think it's probably a cherry tree?
I have to say, I had expected to see more flowering trees all around, but I haven't noticed many in Somerville. I went to Jamaica pond and didn't see any there either. Are they all clustered downtown? I wish someone would make a map of the Boston area showing where all the beautiful flowering trees are and when they bloom (and correspondingly where the best fall foliage trees are).
Now it's supposed to rain the next few days and I feel like I might have already missed a lot of the spring flowers. I guess I should have made the time to go downtown more often. Maybe that late snowstorm also impacted the amount of flowers this year.

Giraffatitan, meaning "giant giraffe", is a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the late Jurassic Period (Kimmeridgian–Tithonian stages). It was originally named as an African species of Brachiosaurus (B. brancai) but this has since been changed. Giraffatitan was for many decades known as the largest dinosaur but recent discoveries of several larger dinosaurs prove otherwise: giant titanosaurians (Argentinosaurus, Puertasaurus and Futalognkosaurus) appear to have surpassed Giraffatitan in terms of sheer mass also the sauropod dinosaur Sauroposeidon is estimated to be taller and possibly heavier than Giraffatitan.
All size estimates for Giraffatitan are based on the specimen HMN SII a subadult individual between 21.8–22.5 metres (72–74 ft) in length and about 12 meters (39 ft) tall. Mass estimates are varied from as little as 15 tonnes (17 short tons) to as much as 78.3 tonnes (86.3 short tons) but there is evidence supporting that these animals could grow larger HMN XV2, represented by a fibula 13% larger than the corresponding material on HMN SII which might have attained 26 metres (85 ft) in length or longer.
Giraffatitan brancai was first named and described by German paleontologist Werner Janensch in 1914 as Brachiosaurus brancai, based on several specimens recovered between 1909 and 1912 from the Tendaguru formation near Lindi, in what was then German East Africa, today Tanzania. It is known from five partial skeletons, including three skulls and numerous fragmentary remains including skull material, some limb bones, vertebrae and teeth. It lived from 145 to 150 million years ago, during the Kimmeridgian to Tithonian ages of the Late Jurassic period.
A famous specimen of Giraffatitan brancai mounted in Museum für Naturkunde (Berlin) is one of the largest, and in fact the tallest, mounted skeletons in the world, as certified by the Guinness Book of Records. Beginning in 1909, Werner Janensch found many additional G. brancai specimens in Tanzania, Africa, including some nearly complete skeletons, and used them to create the composite mounted skeleton seen today.

The Mill Matsopoulos in Trikala is one of our country's most important monuments Industrial Heritage. Built in 1884 by brothers Agathocles, soon after the liberation of Thessaly. He was the first roller built in Greece and the largest in the Balkans, while next to him built the first pasta factory in the country.
In the years which followed ownership changed several times until he came to John Matsopoulos and after his death in 1977 in Trikala municipality, which co-funded by the European Union renovated.
Nowadays it is a dynamic cultural center, with many cultural activities take place there. In the central building mainly hosted art exhibitions and the other areas included the municipal theater, summer cinema, conference room and workshop art cultural organization of the municipality. Finally, in the area it operates elementary cafeteria where you can relax in a green environment.
In recent years, however, his reputation spread nationwide as "Mill of the Elves", the largest Christmas theme park with undeniable positive effects on the economy of the city.
But the (anti) aesthetic interventions which exists at the time, with huge volumes of plastic colorful kitsch interfere anarchically and unsightly buildings between the insalling, alter and injure "fatally" the architectural character of the monument.
So in another, quieter period I decided to photograph the magnificent building complex recalling the unique physiognomy inspired the corresponding title.
Wikipedia: Phra Prang Sam Yot, also known as Phra Prang Sam Yod, is a 13th-century temple in Lopburi, Thailand. The temple was built by King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer Empire in the early 13th century. Jayavarman intended for the temple to be an important location in the royal cult surrounding himself, as it would increase the legitimacy of his rule. In addition, the temple served to showcase the prestige of the Khmer Empire in Lopburi (then known as Lavo) as it had only recently captured the city from its Cham and Mon rivals. One prominent statue in the temple was dedicated by Jayavarman to "Jayabuddhamahanatha", which is translatable to "Victorious Buddha, the Great Protector" - further evidence of the temple's martial origins. Built along the lines of contemporaneous Khmer architecture, the temple is made from brick with a stucco exterior, the latter possibly being inspired by Mon architectural tradition. The structure has three towers, each with a corresponding deity; the north tower is dedicated to Prajnaparamita, the central tower to the Buddha, and the south tower to Avalokiteśvara. The temple is furnished with art depicting Buddhist iconography. Originally dedicated to Mahayana Buddhism, the temple survived the end of the Khmer influence over Lavo, and the temple was later rededicated to Theravada Buddhism when Lopburi came under the control of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. During the reign of Narai the Great (1656-1688) of Ayutthaya, a prayer hall (Wihar) was added to the temple complex.
After a mostly cloudy day a small group of us gathered at the western end of the Kansas City Southern's Bonnet Carre Spillway bridge to shoot the outbound business train as they began their deadhead run back north to Shreveport. As the train entered the 1.8 mile long, 10mph, bridge we were in clouds. As the train crept closer the sun found a magical gap in the clouds, and stayed that way just long enough to get the train off of the bridge. The KCS FP9 passenger motors, and corresponding business train are the best looking train around. KCS 1 was originally built for the Canadian National all the way back in 1955, and is still going strong on the head end of the KCS business train today.
Thanks for looking and enjoy!
With all the traveling around this year and the corresponding photos that came from it, I haven't even gotten around to publishing a photo of a field of flowers that isn't blooming anymore since months. Maybe it's even been harvested in the meantime.
Here you can see a rapeseed field that I photographed in April of this year near the village of Stürza in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (i.e. in the surrounding area - there are currently no mountains to be seen).
At first I was disappointed that the sun was hidden by a veil of clouds and the sunset was a bit blurred. But then, when this veil was illuminated from behind, I was quite taken by the sight.
It was only when I was editing the photo on the computer that I noticed the symbol, what the clouds had written in the sky and which spontaneously reminded me of a slanted "L" or "S". Whatever that means.
Maybe you have even more imagination than me and see something completely different in it. If so, then let us know in the comments.

Across the gorge as you approach Dechen from Tsakhalho and Hongsan, there are truly dramatic views of the Kawa Karpo glaciers. The astonishing main glacier of Mount5 Kawa Karpo deceives the eye, appearing to plunge downwards almost to the level of the Dza chu རྫ་ཆུ་ (Mekong) in the gorge below. This mighty watershed range has 13 snow peaks forming a north-south alignment. Among them, Mount Kawa Karpo, the highest, is 6740m, and to its north is Mount Dradul Wangchuk (6379m ). Immediately south of Kawa Karpo, there is a glacial protuberance known as Phakpa Neten Chudruk, and to its south Mount Pawo Pamo (6000 m),followed in succession by the spectacular five-peaked crown of Mount Gyelwa Riknga (5471 m), and two lesser peaks known as Chugen-je and Tsela Nyenpo. Kawa Karpo itself is conceived as a male protector deity and Men Tsunmo as the corresponding female consort. The range is an important focal point for pilgrimage, revered as one of the 25 important meditation sites associated with Padmasambhava in Kham and Amdo. Specifically, this mountain range symbolizesthe body- aspect of buddha-speech. In the past its sanctuaries and hermitages have been a stronghold of the Nyingmapa school. Vairocana gave teachings on Dzogchen to his followers at Tsawarong, to the northwest of the range; and there are branches of Katok Monastery in its environs. The most renowned figure in this lineage was Kawakarpowa Namka Gyatso who, with his teacher Khedrup Yeshe Gyeltsen, expounded the Katok lineage throughout this extreme southern region of Kham. www.footprinttravelguides.com/c/2848/tibet/&Action=pr...
The entrance halls are of the purest Gaudinian style, with an organic structure reflecting Gaudí's deep study of nature. Made with local stone masonry, they stand out for their hyperbolic paraboloid-shaped vaults, covered with brightly colored ceramics. Gaudí used the technique of the Catalan vault or vaulted vault, which consisted of superimposing several layers of bricks with mortar. Some of the structures were prefabricated and then installed in their corresponding places, again putting Gaudí ahead of current construction techniques.
This time of year our black-crested titmice, with all the feeding activity and corresponding calls, put on quite a show. Lots of fun to see and hear and shoot...

At the moment, practically all RUs are desperately looking for train drivers. Some companies have designed their locomotives with corresponding advertising. This is also the case with the Wiener Lokalbahn. Here, the ELL Vectron 193 243 was wrapped in foil, even completely on one side. The lure is a career in rail freight transport. On 25 April 2021, I was able to photograph the aforementioned locomotive in front of container train DGS 42944 from Enns to Weddewarder Tief near Laaber in the Upper Palatinate.

Τι είναι,επομένως,το στοιχείο που ασκεί τόση γοητεία στον επισκέπτη του;
The last years to put aside family in Lefokastro of S.Pelion I had the opportunity to visit all the surrounding close and more outlying villages.
The strongest impression I caused Lafkos, a village that is not included in what we would say 'decoys', with particular touristic reputation is.
There are beachfront (the seaport is very famous Milina), not the classic mountain nor has the urban coherence of famous traditional villages of Pelion.
What is therefore the element that carries so much charm to the visitor?
In my opinion this is the love of the people to the place of which pervades every corner: Houses cared (mansions, folk, with neo-classical influences) not for tourist exploitation (there are such) but mainly built with and by personal taste of the inhabitants of the faithful who have not deserted the crisis and occasional use.
All different from each other by only cohesive element the personal stamp of the permanent owner.
That's why the village bustles life. residents are aware, respect, appreciate and continue their rich cultural heritage not for tourist "show" but because that learned to live.
It is the ideal place for relaxed voltoula and browsing the cobbled streets of ap'akrou to end.
Fresh breeze (for the most part not fit cars), admirable architecture, flowered courtyards, green everywhere and vibrant culture to earn creating the need to return there.
The village was built between the 15th and 16th century by Captain Stergios Basdekis. Experienced moments of great economic boom during the Turkish occupation and great is the tradition in the arts and letters.
Particular mention should be made:
-The Fampeio Museum operates in the old building school. In courtyard admire outstanding sculptures from white Pelion marble of the local painter and sculptor Thanasis Fabas, inside panels of the same while the ground floor houses the folklore museum of the association "Action".
-The Cafe-attraction Emmanuel Forlidas. Is the oldest cafe in Greece which operates continuously since 1785 !!! At the time the upper floor served as an inn, she had hosted Papadiamandis dressed as monkchild & Varnalis when he was school director of neighboring Argalasti.
- The Museum of Radio "Antonis ceilings" which was named by the late sculptor, who loved Lafkos and there lived the last years of his life, the collection donated by German Vilfrent Seps.
- The "Guitar Days" These cultural events organized every summer and which are seminars and concerts of classical guitar, and invited many renowned guitarists and composers since fine child of Lafkos is the corresponding radiation guitarist Dimitris Fambas.
I apologize if tired by the many posts and accompanying presentation, but I felt the need to share with you this remarkable place!
One of the neat things about the change in the length of daylight is the triggering of the hormones in birds and the corresponding change in their behaviours. Northern Cardinals are incredibly shy, and flee any contact with humans. But the stress of hormones, territory, and other males makes them more or less oblivious to us.

A creative idea using the Keep of Quel Castle, showing its reflection in a blue lagoon.
This work was done entirely in Photoshop, including the creation of the corresponding noise filter for this result. There is no generative artificial intelligence involved; I simply used the standard tools of the editing program.
The town of Quel is a municipality located in the autonomous community of La Rioja, Spain, belonging to the Rioja Baja region, specifically the Arnedo subregion. Quel is known for its castle, which crowns the town and has always been a defining feature. The name Quel comes from the Arabic word Qalat, meaning 'castle'. This small town is nestled against a steep sandstone hill, upon which the castle ruins rise, dominating the town and the Cidacos river valley that irrigates a rich agricultural area.

Lava flows are commonly classified into two types according to their characteristics. Aa lavas have a rough surface, whereas pahoehoe lavas are "characterized by smooth, gently undulating, or broadly hummocky surfaces" (Britannica). Here is a rare view of pahoehoe lava forming. At the top is a thin solidified "skin" of smooth lava above a cooling lava pond. The pond has a grey leathery surface, but underneath the insulating roof it is still a red-hot liquid. The names aa and pahoehoe are Hawaiian and used as geological terms; the corresponding names in Icelandic are "apalhraun" and "helluhraun". Hawaiian names are wovel-rich and nice-sounding, so they have found favour in the scientific canon.

The Church of San Francisco is a Catholic basilica that stands in the middle of the historic center of Quito, facing the square of the same name.
The structure is the largest architectural complex within the historic centers of all America, and for this reason it is known as "the Escorial of the New World."
San Francisco is considered a jewel of continental architecture for its mixture of different styles combined over more than 150 years of construction.
On its three and a half hectares of surface area, thirteen cloisters have been built (six of them of great magnitude), three churches, a large Atrium, totaling approximately forty thousand square meters of building. There are currently many activities taking place there: conventual and religious, public attention in the areas of health, communication, education and others of a popular nature that keep the building active.
Inside the church there are more than 3,500 works of colonial art, of multiple artistic manifestations and varied techniques, especially those corresponding to the Quito School of art, which was born precisely in this place. It also has a Franciscan library, described in the 17th century as the best in the Viceroyalty of Peru.
The complex is preceded by a homonymous plaza that for years supplied the city with water from its central fountain, and which has functioned as a popular market, as a space for military and political gatherings, and as a place for social gathering and recreation.
The concave-convex staircase that connects the plaza with the Atrium, which highlights the mannerist-baroque façade of the main temple, is considered of great architectural importance in America.
----------
This corridor, also named “Galleria, is located on the first floor of Villa Della Porta Bozzolo in Casalzuigno (Varese, Northern Italy).
The Villa dates back to the second half of the XVI cent., but the inner decoration was done in the early half of the XVIII cent.
The Galleria is richly decorated with illusionistic frescos: on the middle of the wall, in correspondence of the small green sofa, it is depicted the biblical episode “Agar and Ismaele helped by the Angel”, while on the two sides, inside false niches, two female figures are depicted, corresponding to the “Mildness” and “Vigilance”
The eastern North American Monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer/autumn migration from the northern and central United States and southern Canada to Florida and Mexico. During the fall migration, Monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multi-generational return north. The western North American population of Monarchs west of the Rocky Mountains often migrates to sites in southern California but has been found in overwintering Mexican sites as well. (Wikipedia)

Towards the end of my recent stay in Vietnam, I had to change hotels. While I first lived in my favorite neighborhood Thao Diem, my last hotel was in a rather brittle neighborhood, without shops and hardly any restaurants. The sobriety of the environment is also manifested in this image of a street wall, in front of which only one person passes by (out of the 9 million that HCMC has) and the two chairs and a small table that stand around somewhat unmotivated. However, the minimal furniture is typical for Vietnam. You'll love these miniature chairs! In every local restaurant, the guests sit around on such plastic parts. Of course, this also requires correspondingly small tables.
I have fond memories of taking this image - it was shot on my very first trip out with my new Canon 1DX. I had been watching the owl hunting for some time in the evening and kept having to dial up the ISO to keep up with the fading light. At one point the bird dove down into the deep grass and seemed to be successful in catching some prey. I took advantage of the distraction to crawl out of the car and move up closer to the owl under the cover of the vegetation. When the owl finally popped up and took flight it flew right at me, giving me a great series of images. Unfortunately, with the low light conditions (and corresponding required camera settings) the image quality of the final result wasn't that impressive - fine for a small web-based image, but not suitable for printing.
Fast forward 8 years --> last week I was watching a YouTube video on Glenn Bartley's channel where he reviewed the new DxO PureRAW software. Like Glenn, I have never been too impressed with Adobe's ability to process high ISO files from Canon cameras. While Canon's DPP software does a much better job, frankly, it is just painful to use. After Glenn's review I downloaded the 30-day trial of the software and gave it whirl. Having now monkeyed around with the software for a week, I have to say that in general I am very impressed by the results I have been getting on high ISO files - enough so, that I am going to pull the trigger and purchase the software. This image, shot at ISO-16,000, cleaned up better than I could have imagined - the result are good enough for a large print.
