…The world knows a lot about what’s going on in Ukraine and supports it in the fantastic measure. But I’m afraid that it doesn’t know much about the struggle in Russia. And I think that people who are doing something here are in the great need of some encouraging, moral support and simple attention. Without them a lot of great things are running out of steam. I’m afraid that I’m seeing some signs of that already. The pressure is increasing. In the beginning of the 2nd month, we get used to the horrors of war. It’s not that close to our houses. The shelling and devastation are somewhere out there. People as usually want to live those ordinary lives. And that way we could loose not only precious time, in which people die, but the opportunity to get back the normal life exactly when we have a chance.

To be continued…

Also, I want to speak with people about this nightmare times, to show, to see and to listen. To do something together. I think that what I’m doing now is the “photo-diary from the other side” with the unique opportunity to show life in the country when its doors are closing. So, I’m very welcome you to stay in touch with me on Insta, which now turned to the main site of the Digital Resistance in Russia in spite of becoming the outlaw social media or maybe partly because of that. As well as on other social resources. Though I’ve abandoned them for now or barely even started, but I’ll be back. Hopefully.

But I Don't

I'm that kind of Guy........!!!!!!!!!! haha

This will allow me to devote a bit more time to on going projects, but if I see an opportunity to post something new, different, maybe even Interesting I will do so!!!!!!

Then again I might just sit around and drink some Red Wine and to hell with it!!.....hahaha

Title for this year was lifted from the Byrds song, lyrics by Pete Seeger and not at all inspired in any way from the Book of Ecclesiastes.

(Continuation of the Runya series. You could see the previous images and the story if you feel like that).

Yesterday, at the end of my working day’n’night, when I drank my after working beer at some small pub, Runya phoned me. First, she asked me, where is that roof, the key from which (to get an access to the entrance) she duplicated from mine. I explained and offered to keep company. Runya answered thanks a lot, but no, the reason being, she already has one. I answered no problem. Then Runya tg’t me, that said key isn’t opening the entrance, so, couldn’t I accompany them. I answered, sure, I’ll be right away. Which I did, finished my beer very fast and then was riding even faster. I missed Runya. She told us, that she’s up to her ears in studying. Because she like it this way. Earlier that day I decided to quit to tg Runya, because she didn’t answer several times (usually I share with her some music, which I currently listening, with some comments, and it seemed that it worked). I don’t dig one-way conversations, because there aren’t conversations at all. Now I could continue our online communication.

To tell you the (part of the) truth, there was hell of a rainy day, so I don’t feel like working (as a bicycle delivery boy) and instead made this photo’n’text. Now it’s much better outside my window, so, I’ll better go. Recently, I discovered the opportunity to change my texts after posting. Maybe I’ll do it later, because I have to go now. You could return someday and see, has anything changed (it always does, anyway).

In addition to the previous letter – there are also 2 nations in those 2 countries which are co-exist in one space (Russia and Ruzzia, or maybe Ruzia?) – Russians and Ruzzians, or maybe Ruzians. You’re lucky in your other world: you see more and more Russians. A lot of them assumed their places in this World Anti-War Ist. But we here see more Ruzians. It seems that they emerged only after the beginning of this war. My wife recently noticed, that faces and people’s behavior in our town an mass looks a bit silly compared with before the war. We thought that it’s partly because a lot of Russians departed, including some of our friends… The new wave of emigration, see… Like after 1917…

(Continuation of a story I began with Portugal #1)

Marvin and I returned to Cascais to resume our respective lives. He did buy a condo in Portugal that he ultimately shared with a Portuguese woman. The man who had encouraged me to exercise my newly found freedoms in Morocco was actually someone who was drawn to traditional women. He continued to try to fulfill the endless bureaucratic requirements that were asked of him in order to gain permanent immigration in Portugal.

I moved closer to the center of town and to the sea. I continued to write and continued to be very critical. I wandered the little fishing village and visitors struck up conversations with me. One woman observed that it was difficult to think of me as a writer because I was so gregarious. I was beginning to agree.

As the fifth month of my stay in Cascais arrived, so did sad news from America. My mother’s health was declining. It was necessary for me to return home. Marvin and I had kept in touch and he offered to take me to the airport. I packed up all of my yellow legal tablets and my meager belongings.

In the back of my mind, the Orient was a plan and a dream. I missed Asia. Perhaps I would end up on the other side of the world after being with my mother.

This picture was taken more recently when I returned to Lisboa on a cruise ship. It is a landmark of Lisboa. The 25 de Abril Bridge on the Tagus River was built in 1966. It was built by the same construction company that built the San Francisco – Oakland bridge. They even used the same color of paint on both bridges.

On that return trip, I raced off of the cruise ship and hired a taxi to take me to Cascais. Twenty years had not changed the little town very much, but now it was called a boutique fishing village and was drawing a good number of visitors. They had added a large super market and that seemed to be the extent of the modernization. The taxi driver was thrilled to show me around and explain the changes. Was Marvin still there? Sadly, we had lost touch with each other over the years which happens so frequently in our hurried lives so I didn’t know the answer.

When I got back to the cruise ship, I saw the cruise director and the enrichment director who I had befriended. They asked about my activities for the day. I told them that I had taken a taxi to Cascais. They looked at me and warned that doing such a thing could be quite dangerous. I am certain that I looked at them with some distain when I told them that I used to live there. I’m not sure they comprehended as the American man who was in charge of enrichment lectures on board the ship for years had rarely gotten off the ship.

(Continuation of story from 1st post on Portugal)

So Marvin and I set off on our road trip to Morocco. Spot stayed in Portugal with a sitter. We stopped in several small places in Portugal so he could look at apartments/condos and then we crossed over into Spain.

Suddenly, the sun seemed to be shining more intensely and there was an exuberance in the air. We stopped for picnics in the beautiful parks along the way. Wine, cheese and bread made up our meals. I still think that this is the perfect lunch.

Spain did remind me of California and Marvin thought the same thing. We looked at condos for him, but I could tell he didn't really want to leave Portugal and move to Spain. So strange indeed. We had both fallen in love with Portugal which was mired in the past.

Malaga was a definite stop, however. We admired the ancient stone walls and of course went high into the hills to take a picture of the bull ring. You have seen that shot a million times before so here is one of an ad for a bullfight.

We took few pictures along the way. We were quite excited to get to the Straits of Gibraltar.

Wanna Buy Me A Coffee?

(Continuation of the series. You could read about Mark, guitar superhero and my master of music, in the previous posts). Today Mark McArow dropped by: I’m his tea dealer, because we’re buying tea in bulk from one guy who lives for this and personally swings through China to find some Real McCoy for his online tea shop. Now Mark hooked on Lao Cha Van, in English – Master Of An Old Tea. It’s mature oolong tea, very powerful. I myself can’t live a day without pu'er (or you prefer to call it Pu-erh?). But honor Lao Cha Van as well. Especially before going to sleep. When Mark was here, we drank GABA tea from Hong Kong, which expands consciousness pretty well too. I was delighted to know from Mark this day, that it’s heightens the perception and calms at the same time. Sounds perfect to me. I enlightened Mark about the war situation and he discussed with me his plans to visit Berlin for one gig.

This year I spend most time unexpectedly on my own. The whole bunch of friends was going to visit me on holidays as well as some of not so close guests and it didn’t happen for the various reasons. Traditionally there was the time of big jamming in our private house, when you could play music all night long as loud as you feel like. I supposed to be with my closest friends, who are living in Kazakhstan now, when they visited Russia very shortly to give a concert on our national holiday, Old New Year. Even this didn’t happen. That what I call circumstances of force majeure. So, when Mark visited me, I felt the preciseness of every good encounter.

A continuation on the theme...I rather like this one. Some good leading lines and, I hope, some atmosphere.

As said Russian writer Irina Govorukha, war is crazy gal and if we wouldn’t manage to stop her, she’ll stop us all, and pretty soon.

Beautiful model, my good friend and sister in arts – Irinka, @kraskivrukah on Insta. Yesterday we made another collab, which is more about unbelievable fragile beauty of peace. This is the main theme of my newest work in progress. I feel that to show this is as important in our common anti-war, as to show the horrors of war. How do you think?

(Continuation. Please see the texts of the earliest images of this series – my “letters from the other side”).

When Dunja finally arrived from Vladimir, 100 km from my hometown, almost the week later than she said that she would and just for one night instead of several days (unpredictable gal even for herself, Dunja), she told me about Chekhov’s collected works which her neighbor presented her. She randomly opened one of the books and immediately ran into words about mistaken prayers for eternal rest of Dunja who was actually alive and going to marry. Our Dunja was a bit scared. Very sensitive, our Dunja. So, as she dropped by just for one night and purposedly for the photo session, we leaved my other guests after some drinking and jamming and set to make the photo op in the Drunken Master style (because of the guests, but that’s my favourite style anyway and Dunja decided to bring the bottle of wine guests or not). On the way Dunja told me about the wild part of her nature, how she feels something witching inside. So, I’ve changed the plan and opted for the wildest available nearby location with abandoned and partly burnt garden sheds. I’ve got woods from home in the big expedition backpack for the photo-light and the bottle of wine. We groped about in the deep night garden overrun with weeds till stumbled on this very shed. “Shall we go inside?”, suggested Dunja. So, we did it through the glassless window. It was just closer than the door. I saw something inside. “Looks like a coffin to me”, shared I my observation. “I wish you wouldn’t told me that!”, answered Dunja. So, once again Eros and Thanatos intertwined over and over in this photo-fairytale. Like in our life, where a bunch of insane thugs trying to make my unhappy motherland Russia to die for those whims. And to make another country, my beloved Ukraine, to disappear as it never be (now they’re ordered to rewrite the history textbooks). Are they so powerful? Is it some trick and trance? I still hope that the freedom could help eventually to shake this obsession. Like in the Vietnam times of America.

I’ve thought of uploading this photo in the morning instead of in the nowhere at the night but that’s the Green Corn Moon, the last supermoon of the year after all. Right after that I decided to start uploading the next project with the same character, our Alice, who, as it seems, grow up a bit (which is the most natural thing for Alice, as we know). The title of this newest unfinished project is “She could move herself all the way” («Она может двигать собой»), which is my very approximate translation of the quote of the song “She could move” («Она может двигать») of our legendary group Aquarium (Аквариум). That quote is very probably the English calque, maybe the literal translation of some Dylan’s or Bolan’s or some other’s song, but I couldn’t find the original. So be it. I have such a lot to share with you, but I’ll rather not make it the longread. See you soon with rather different Alice.

Continuation of chess pieces theme. (Explore)

In continuation of my astro-landscape series, here's another scene I shot last week of Sedona's Cathedral Rock reflecting in a rainwater pool on Secret Mesa.

Once again, this is a blend of a blue hour capture of the landscape with a star tracker shot of the night sky taken a couple of hours later. The combination of receding clouds (being lit by a nearby town) and distant wildfire smoke give this a bit of an ethereal look.

Continuation of the analog, black and white series of photos.

I am glad that I was able to photograph this reading couple. Currently, few people read texts not on the screen - the classic way of reading (on paper) seems to be going away.

These two people sitting next to each other and reading are at the same time close to each other and far away - due to where the read text takes them.

Taken with a Nikon F90x camera and Nikkor AF D 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 lens on ILFORD XP2 super 400 negative film. Most of the photos were taken on a black and white analogue walk with Ilford.
