Continental Airlines was a major United States airline founded in 1934 and eventually headquartered in Houston, Texas. It had ownership interests and brand partnerships with several carriers. Continental started out as one of the smaller carriers in the United States, known for its limited operations under the regulated era. After 1978, Continental grew into one of the country's largest carriers despite facing financial troubles and other issues, eventually becoming one of the more successful airlines in the United States. The airline merged with UAL Corporation (the parent company of United Airlines) via a stock swap in 2010. Continental's shares were acquired by UAL Corporation; the re-organized holding company was renamed United Continental Holdings. During the integration period, each airline ran a separate operation under the direction of a combined leadership team, based in Chicago. The integration was completed on March 3, 2012. Although the merged airline retained the United name, it uses Continental's operating certificate and livery. On June 27, 2019, United changed its parent company name from United Continental Holdings to United Airlines Holdings. 14375

One of my favourite all time shots from St Maarten. Continental Airlines Boeing 737, destined for Newark EWR, with a very late rotation from runway 27 at SXM takes it low over Maho Beach in fabulous late afternoon lighting

On September 17, 2010, Continental shareholders approved a merger with United Airlines with the United name surviving.
Continental began in 1934 as Varney Speed Lines which operated airmail and passenger services in the American Southwest. Varney was renamed Continental in 1937. Continental’s was one of the earliest users of the Boeing 707 Jet Airplane and was a launch airline for the Boeing 747. In the late 1950s and 1960s CEO Robert Six correctly predicted that increase traffic and not higher fares was the key to an airlines success. Six was also “quality obsessed” and the airline was the gold standard of US airlines during the 1960s and early 70s. Early Continental 747s featured an upper-deck first class lounge and main deck Polynesian Pub, along with high end meal service.
The company’s history became treacherous following the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act, including an ownership struggle with Texas Air’s Frank Lorenzo (which Lorenzo ultimately won), Continental’s president, A. L. Feldman suicide in 1981, low employee morale during the Lorenzo era and two stops in bankruptcy court protection.
In 1993 Continental re-emerged from bankruptcy for the second time, but shortly thereafter the airline appeared to be heading back to bankruptcy court for an unprecedented third time. Gordon Bethune took over in 1994 as president and he and his team is credited with one of the most significant turn arounds in American business history, as the airline transformed itself back into one of the most admired US carriers over the last 15 years.

Continental Airlines and Brazil's VASP (Viação Aérea São Paulo) had a notable connection in the late 1990s involving a unique half-and-half livery DC-10 aircraft (N14062/N13066), where one side sported Continental's colors and the other VASP's, showcasing a partnership or lease agreement, possibly related to Ecuatoriana Airlines where VASP held influence. While VASP was a major Brazilian carrier that faced financial struggles and eventually ceased operations, this distinctive DC-10 highlights a specific operational link with Continental during that era.
So a 08 departure from LGW was required to get a photo opportunity of this unique scheme DC-10. Having started with Alitalia it was eventually broken up at Roswell in 2003 after 30 years service.
