SHERRI AND THE SUMATRAN. Here's a bit of "conservation surrealism" to start off your week. I do this as a composite of many of my images and a digital paintbrush. The photographer in the piece is @ellebearphotography who shares my love of animals and passion for wildlife conservation. I think this image will be her holiday and wedding present. Enjoy!

Lately there has been a huge release of water into the lake. I wanted to document it. There are always fishermen. There are rarely fish. Mt. Wilson in background. _A010011-Edit

One of the herd keeping scrub encroachment at bay on a lowland heath site. Exmoor ponies do the job on the other side of the heath so perhaps there is an experiment taking place to see which animal is most effective.

The snow starts to fly as a thoroughbred and two elk trot across the St. Joseph River at Conservation Park in Three Rivers, MI during the opening stages of a winter storm, leading the days #302 road freight and its 54-car consist. This weekday train peddles tonnage south early in the morning out of Kalamazoo down to the interchange point with Norfolk Southern at their large hump yard in Elkhart, IN. The Grand Elk (GDLK), part of Watco's large family of shortline railroads, began operations March of 2009 and runs on 123 miles of track leased from the NS running between Grand Rapids, MI, south to Kalamazoo and on toward Elkhart. This portion was originally a branch line operated by the long defunct Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway. Three Rivers derives its name from the city's location at the confluence of the above mentioned St. Joseph River and two tributaries, the Portage and Rocky Rivers

Conservation Status

There have been documented increases in American white pelican populations in recent years, resulting from conservation efforts. Historically populations declined in response to destruction of breeding and foraging habitats and continued destruction of wetland habitats remains one of the most important influences on current populations. American white pelicans are especially sensitive to human disturbance at nesting sites, where human presence can result in temporary or permanent nest abandonment, increasing the likelihood of mortality associated with exposure and gull predation. Common human disturbances at nesting colonies are low-flying airplanes or motorboats. Pesticide use throughout their range has resulted in egg-shell thinning and poisoning. They are considered least concern by the IUCN because of their large population sizes and broad range. (Knopf and Evans, 2004)

Been missing for a while, probably found better hunting for a few weeks, but now it's great to see her back again!

Not the sharpest of shots, sorry, but Pup was concerned to get on with her walk and gave me a mighty pull on the lead .. then the Kestrel flew off!

The Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve is a protected area consisting of wetlands and surrounding monsoon and dry forests approximately 70 km (43 mi) east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia (a comfortable 1 hour drive from Darwin CBD or suburbs).

The Reserve lies within the Adelaide and Mary River Floodplains, which is an Important Bird Area.

Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve was created after the demise of an unsuccessful rice farming project which operated in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The dam was originally created as dry season water storage facility for the rice crop.

The reserve attracts a wide range of local and migratory water birds and other wildlife including one of the largest populations of snakes within Australia (including the Water Python and Death Adder), and includes a several raised observation platforms.

Saltwater Crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) and Freshwater Crocodiles (Crocodylus johnstoni) can be seen at Fogg Dam all year around.

Fogg Dam is open 24 hrs per day all days of the year. The only limitation is that during very heavy monsoon rain periods, water may overflow the dam wall (which serves as a road through the reserve) and limit traffic to high-clearance vehicles.

In some years, the dam wall may be temporarily damaged by monsoon rain overflows and be impassable for a short section.

The open nature of the reserve along the dam wall makes it an excellent site for birds in flight (BIF) photography.

The highest bird activity for BIF photography occurs later in the wet and early dry season (say March to June) when thousands of waterbirds and other water-attracted species are moving around the reserve.

Passerine species can be best photographed from treed areas, and the Woodlands and Monsoon Forest tracks.
