An opinion on how to light the Pinnacles was agreed upon by all in attendance on this magical evening at the Trona Pinnacles.

I've spoken about C23 C24 before and I will get to explaining the phenomena that is going on as soon as I put some photos together that demonstrate it properly.

For about a 60 minute period there are birds of every type, shape, size, color that you might think you'd encounter by the hundreds at any moment (and some you wouldn't think you'd encounter).

Anyway when this one appeared it was one of a hundred I could have photographed at that moment. I didn't pay it any special mind until i processed the photo. It is a white form of something - but what??

Well here is the consensus -

Juvenile Little Blue Herons are white, similar to the egrets.

Herons in late summer/autumn provide challenges to birders, as adults are in nonbreeding plumage and juveniles abound. The reference to late summer may not be accurate for more southernly Florida -

Since writing the above, i noticed in processing that i had photographed, on the same and on other days, similar looking birds - there is one in the comments below

What i also noticed is that i had a photo of a caracara in flight - i almost never see one, so have a photo of one in flight was stunning (to me anyway) - this photo isn't so good, so i've posted it here in the comments below - now that i know that at least one is out there, i will be looking for it

.

Consensus is either red tailed hawk or red shouldered hawk.

It has been hanging out in our yard lately and has been killing our doves and quail. While it is a beautiful bird, I really would like to deter it from hurting our dove and quail families we have. Should I just let nature take its course or is there something I can do to make it leave our yard and go somewhere else?

Pedra da Gávea is a monolithic mountain in Tijuca Forest, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Composed of granite and gneiss, its elevation is 844 metres (2,769 ft), making it one of the highest mountains in the world that ends directly in the ocean. Trails on the mountain were opened up by the local farming population in the early 1800s; today, the site is under the administration of the Tijuca National Park.

The mountain's name translates as Rock of the Topsail, and was given to it during the expedition of Captain Gaspar de Lemos, begun in 1501, and in which the Rio de Janeiro bay (today Guanabara Bay, but after which the city was named) also received its name. The mountain, one of the first in Brazil to be named in Portuguese, was named by the expedition's sailors, who compared its silhouette to that of the shape of a topsail of a carrack upon sighting it on January 1, 1502. That name in turn came to be given to the Gávea area of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Differential weathering on one side of the rock has created what is described as a stylized human face. Markings on another face of the rock have been described as an inscription. Geologists and scientists are nearly in agreement that the "inscription" is the result of erosion and that the "face" is a product of pareidolia. Furthermore, the consensus of archaeologists and scholars in Brazil is that the mountain should not be viewed as an archaeological site.

Yet another old car that I can’t identify. I think I only recognized the Jaguar, the MG and the Datsun in this lot. This is another bright orange car though, so I guess this color was popular.

I need your help yet again, knowledgeable car folks.

So the consensus among the groundhogs who predicted whether we have an early spring or not, is that we will have an early spring. Although that made a lot of people happy, my husband and I decided we would go out and enjoy that huge dump of snow we got last week before it was all gone! We snowshoed part of the Bruce Trail at Burnt Point. It was an amazing hike. I cannot remember the last time the trees were so full of fresh snow. Truthfully, I am enjoying the winter!

Consensus this is a Song Sparrow. I could have gone with Savannah Sparrow just as easily. It wasn't singing it was eating.

The consensus is that this is a propane storage tank AND that it got a bit lost by going through town rather than staying on the highway bypass. It was parked outside my window, so I hurried to get my camera. Alas I was just a wee bit late and missed a bit of the front of the truck.

Attention, troopers! This is Admiral Tarkin with new orders. The chancellor has voiced his concern over the new threats arising in the Dathomir system. A malicious group known as Night Sisters has repeatedly interfered with our military expeditions. Reports show that this group and its members utilize unordinary weaponry and something that, in lack of a better expression, could be described as a sorcery. While you are familiar with the dubious ways of the Jedi already, their abilities might be even more absurd. In consensus with the chancellor, my research team and I have decided that a live subject is needed for further research into this matter. Your mission is to acquire a suitable subject in an assault on one of the Night Sister's lairs on Dathomir. The Jedi are not to be informed of this assignment and will have no part in this operation. I will personally lead the attack. Our assault will be swift and precise. Failure is unacceptable.

Hey there! Welcome to the Dathomir Collaboration! I'm so excited to kick things off today with part one. My part depicts the mission briefing in the hangar of a Venator Class Star Destroyer. A lot of inspiration for the hangar was taken from h2brick's MOC, and obviously, Venator hangars themselves. Speaking of inspiration, the AT-RT is pretty much just a combination of multiple different custom AT-RTs I've seen. Mainly, MClegoboy !. His AT-RT. I would credit the others, but I can't remember their names, and can't find the posts anymore. This thing is certainly rough around the edges. But I had fun trying some new techniques, and in the end, I'm happy with it.

Get excited! Part 2 comes out Thursday, September 3rd!

The McLaren F1 was the ultimate street car of the Twentieth Century. That was the consensus of the motoring press, and certainly McLaren’s intent. Who better to unseat Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Jaguar than the factory that had accumulated five consecutive Group 7 (Can Am) world championships, three Indy 500 victories and six Formula 1 titles?

Put to the task of creating McLaren’s ultimate street car was Gordon Murray, who became famous designing the Brabham race car that caused the phrase “ground effects” to be coined. Accordingly, the aerodynamics of Murray’s F1 McLaren were exquisite, showing so few wind-harnessing excrescences that one wonders how the car stayed on the road. The secret? A full ground effects under tray is incorporated with air entering the venturi channel below the front bumper between the flanking radiator openings. Engine air is ducted through the roof. While there is a rear spoiler, it pops up only under braking to apply downforce on the rear to compensate for nose dive.

What the F1 doesn’t have is telling as well: active suspension, four-wheel drive, power steering, anti-lock brakes. The reasoning was that the first two add weight, the third dulls steering response, ABS brings lack of driver control. The factory was confident experienced connoisseurs, who were McLaren’s market, would approve the deletions.

The F1’s body, a monocoque hull made wholly of carbon fibre, was styled by Peter Stevens. The one-plus-two seating configuration is one Murray had doodled in school notebooks while attending college in South Africa. The passengers are literally staggered into a “rear” seat. The center driving position means one doesn’t get into the car so much as install oneself. Once the dihedral door is swung upward and forward, the driver rolls rump-end first across the left-side passenger area, swinging feet down into position. The owner’s manual provides a diagram.

In the motoring world the F1 was as avidly anticipated as the various incarnations of Star Wars. With a top speed of 240 mph (set by McLaren with the prototype car in stock configuration at VW’s test track) and 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, it did not disappoint. A total of one prototype and 68 production F1 McLarens were built from 1993 to 1998.

Farewell, the dulling meteorological effect didn't work as the rain teems down

And out are my powers of healthy deduction, un-policed defences remain lawless

With rioting pain open till late in the build-up to the run-in of final quest

That which presents a vaccinated gift of brightness, vigour and a sequined night sky

Illuminating the foundations of a new year hope that resolves hopefully at mercy's behest

For now though it's too dark to find the definitions for the words of encouragement

Those far away are so needed while close at hand are the lines of life cut

Shorter and shorter like December daylight, every second counts on the one hand

It instils an immediacy together with an intimacy on the other hand of fate

If thumbs are the peers for the palms that sway with thoughts at their command

Then let them press upon the need of the temples with eyes closed may it help

Soon the nauseating rain becomes the soothing sound we were born to love

From the womb of learning the comforting tones that never quit our deeper sense

The revelling of warmth, safety and love so often missing from practice

Do we remain what we are to sacrifice it all for the sake of society's pretence

Selling our Soul to the devil is the ultimate crime against the salvation of life

Those gratuitous decadent's who roam the lands bringing rich tears to the poor's fears

Do they have a conscience at all? If not, then different worlds we do walk

One day will dawn a dampening mirror to reveal the human sickness

Then they shall see all they can be is servant to their own perversions of which judge and jury talk

The promise of inhalation is conceived, but is it not enough to live in the present?

Broken time and again according to legend and sin is ill-afforded

It's debt mounted by clueless expense upon the hunt for overfed habit

Now grossly obese is this pallid list of heavy emotional calories

Stolen from the starving children of today, the bones of tomorrow's world graves will inhabit

So speak in hope, sound a soothing victory cry of one in the eye in the fight for good

Climb the mountain reach out across the valleys, watch your step and look over the edge

Mass hysteria is no more our nauseous threat as we touch the sobriety of our true world

Distance measured according to feeling, effort judged by heart, love recorded universally

With a conscientious spirit, as one of Nature, to a perfect sleep we accordingly curled.

The dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) is a dolphin found in coastal waters in the Southern Hemisphere. Its specific epithet is Latin for "dark" or "dim". It is very closely genetically related to the Pacific white-sided dolphin, but current scientific consensus holds they are distinct species.

The dolphin's range is patchy, with major populations around South America, southwestern Africa, New Zealand, and various oceanic islands, with some sightings around southern Australia and Tasmania. The dusky dolphin prefers cool currents and inshore waters, but can also be found offshore. It feeds on a variety of fish and squid species and has flexible hunting tactics. The dusky dolphin is known for its remarkable acrobatics, having a number of aerial behaviours. The status of the dolphin is unknown, but it has been commonly caught in gill nets.

The dusky dolphin is small to medium in length compared with other species in the family. There is significant variation in size among the different population areas. The largest dusky dolphins have been encountered off the coast of Peru, where they are up to 210 cm (6 feet) in length and 100 kg (210 pounds) in mass. The size for dusky dolphins in New Zealand have been recorded to be a length range of 167–178 cm and a weight range of 69–78 kg for females and a length range of 165–175 cm and a weigh range of 70–85 kg for males.

Almost no sexual dimorphism occurs in this species, although males have more curved dorsal fins with broader bases and greater surface areas. The back of the dolphin is dark grey or black, and the dorsal fin is distinctively two-toned; the leading edge matches the back in colour, but the trailing edge is a much lighter greyish white. The dusky dolphin has a long, light-grey patch on its fore side leading to a short, dark-grey beak. The throat and belly are white, and the beak and lower jaw are dark grey.

Two blazes of white colour run back on the body from the dorsal fin to the tail. Right between the white areas remains a characteristic thorn-shaped patch of dark colour, by which the species can easily be recognised. Aside from that, dusky dolphins may be confused with other members of their genus when observed at sea. It can be distinguished from the common dolphin, which has a more prominent and longer beak and yellow flank markings. The skull of a dusky dolphin has a longer and narrower rostrum than that of an hourglass dolphin or Peale's dolphin of similar age and size.

The consensus is this is a hybrid between a great blue heron and a great egret. That didn't make sense to me until I found they are part of the same genus. This is probably the correct explanation unless this is a real life example of a possible evolutionary phenomenon called "punctuated equilibrium". I actually think orgone energy is partly responsible for punctuated equilibrium.

The consensus seems to be that this is a Red-Shouldered Hawk. If you disagree, please let me know. (02-0456)

Consensus from a couple of meteorologist around Cheyenne is that with dewpoints in the mid to upper 50s, we should have more rain from these clouds. Over the years it has been observed that once we lose any decent soil moisture (as has been the case this spring) the thunderstorms just can't get enough instability to generate abundant rainfall. Right now we need a good 1 to 2" rain to stop descending into drought. Could this drying trend be the result of La Nina earlier this year?

Bridgewater Canal, Worsley

I’ve been following the recent breach of the Bridgewater Canal on YouTube by ‘Taylors Aboard a Narrowboat’ which occurred on the 1st January 2025 at Little Bollington near Dunham Massey.

I’m not sure what or how it happened, although the consensus is that the 16 hours of non-stop heavy rain filled the canal up to the towpath that washed the embankment away from beneath it causing its complete collapse. What is surprising is that this is the second time this has occurred… and at the exact same location. The previous breach occurred on the 2nd August 1971, which isn’t bad considering it was constructed back in 1761, some 260 years ago and I dare say maintenance has been minimal in recent decades.

I’ve learnt a great deal about this canal in the last week –

It’s 39 miles long (65kms)

It runs from the Castlefield Junction (Manchester) to Runcorn (Cheshire) with two arms: the Leigh Arm and the Preston Brook Branch

There are no locks on the canal, it was built at one level and follows the contours of the land to avoid the use of locks.

However, this may be considered its Achilles’ heel. Such a breach could in theory empty the entire canal, but for the inclusion of ‘stop plank’ points along its length. These are simple devices that consist of slots cut into the towpath walls that enable planks to be slotted across the width of the canal to form a temporary (usually wooden) wall to seal off a section of the canal. A crane is usually found at these points to assist in the lowering of the planks.

So, I now know that this crane in my picture is called a ‘stop plank crane’ and the wall can be seen just to the left lying against the embankment. I had a good look at this and it looks in pretty good condition unlike the one that they tried to use to section off the Little Bollington breach which was rotten and failed resulting in probably 10’s of thousands of gallons leaking out of the canal system before an alternative dam could be put in place – the price of poor maintenance!

Macro of a peony....so much beauty in nature...

The peony is a flowering plant in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Scientists differ on the number of species that can be distinguished ranging from 25 to 40, although the current consensus is 33 known species. The relationships between the species also need to be further clarified.

Most are herbaceous perennial plants 0.25–1 metre (0.82–3.28 ft) tall, but some are woody shrubs 0.25–3.5 metres (0.82–11.48 ft) tall. They have compound, deeply lobed leaves and large, often fragrant flowers, in colors ranging from red to white or yellow, in late spring and early summer.

There is consensus between all serious scientists: Humanity is causing the earth to heat up. We already are responsible for a 1° rise in the average temperature. Our last chance is to stop at a 1.5° increase, otherwise a chain reaction will start that we just can't stop any more.

We all don't want to know what will happen then.

We have to wake up NOW.

Consensus seems to be that this is a hatch year female.
