Artist Statement:
I’m taken with the beauty of a milkweed; its silken seeds emerging from a pod, frozen water forming translucent drips on branches after an ice storm, fern-like patterns forming on glass after a blustery cold night that resembles my own saliva fern patterns that can only be seen at microscopic levels during ovulation. I love vines that relentlessly climb structures to get closer to the sun, and irises, that when looked at closely; between the inner folds and creases, reveal a soft layered beauty. I’m conscious of Earth’s cycles and the natural rhythms of life: lunar phases, ocean tides, the migration of birds, and how a folded bud anticipates the birth of spring. Rocks, glaciers, plants, and animals all evolve in concert with these processes. Humans too, exist within this cycle of nature. I'm conscious of my own female reproductive system that operates in a similar cyclical rhythm. Charting my fertility signals such as basal body temperature, cervical mucus, and cervical position each day allows me to be in harmony with nature’s wider cycles. My work captures the connection between humans and nature through subtle representations.

3 Passions I Have Lived For:
Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy - ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what–at last–I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

Echos of the Republic Of Conscience
This portion of the living map "Watershed Consciousness" represents the Rouge River, which runs through Rouge Park, just east of Toronto. It is the most easterly of the three rivers represented on the map.
The lower edge of the raised portion of the metal represents the shoreline of Lake Ontario. The rivers and their ravines are represented by the bent silver bars and the plants, respectively. The silver shape at the top represents the Oak Ridges Moraine, the northern boundary of the Toronto watershed.
Lead singer of Massachusetts based band Passion Pit Michael Angelakos performs Monday night at the auditorium. The band stopped at MSU as part of the Campus Consciousness Tour, a set of shows that provide students with music as well an opportunity to learn about eco friendly ways of life. Above the Clouds, 2017, Stainless Steel, sculptured by Ren Zhe.
Born in Beijing in 1983, Ren Zhe is a new talent in the field of Chinese scupture, whose artistic achievements are highly respected. He excels at absorbing from traditional Chinese ideological and cultural resources and creating a bridge between the temperament of Oriental meditation and the charms of Western modernity combining Oriental culture and tradition with a contemporary trend; cleverly transforming it into his own artistic language. His works are full of vitality and spontaneity; the beauty of imagery combines with a concept of converting anticipation into actual form, expressing the spirit through his passion, this is what the artist continuously strives to achieve. Between tradition and modernity, Oriental and Western, he seeks within a fourth dimensional space a balancing point, to form a unique artistic style.
"Above the Clouds" depicts a sea of consciousness where sky becomes Earth. They are not two figures, as may appear, but rather one man facing off against, and aspiring to surpass himself. The works beckons viewers to an ethereal space, inspiring them to contemplate the spiritual world and the transcendence of self. There is a transformation of values - at first. "Above the Clouds" presents a clashing duality between the unyielding steel and the dynamism of water. But, upon further reflection, their solidity and movement quietly complement one another; in aa measmerising coexistence.
