The Dymocks Building, aka 'The Block', was conceived by architect F.H.B. Wilton in the 'Interwar Commercial Palazzo Style'. It was to house the 'less elite' or 'bazaar' style of retailing, with specialty businesses offering a wide range of more unusual goods and services. At street-level it was the home for the bookshop which has developed into the iconic modern Dymocks Bookstore, Sydney's premier bookstore. See:

Inside the Grand donjon.

This castle is called the castle of William the Conqueror, but it's not strictly speaking the truth. William was born in Falaise, but this castle was built by his son Henry I (of England) and begun in 1123 - on the site of the earlier castle.

It was rebuilt several times, and finally abandoned in the 17th century. In the 19th century it was partly restored, but it suffered severe damages during the second world war. A new restoration was begun in the 1990's - and is still carried out .

Picking up speed, Amtrak's California Zephyr has just emerged from a nine degree, 30 mph curve, approaching the west switch Gilluly with 14 cars on a sunny but frigid Dec. 10, 1994 morning in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. This is one of the few photos I have of an F40PH locomotive equipped with ditch lights.

Someone once told me always live for the little things in life.

Live for 5 am sunrise and 5 pm sunsets

where you’ll see the colours in the sky

that don’t usually belong.

Live for the road trips and bike rides

with music in your ears and

the wind in your hair.

Live for the day when you’re surrounded

by your favourite people who make you realise

that the world is not a

cold harsh place.

Live for the little things because

they will make you realise that this is what life is about

this is what means to be

alive.

Every time I turn on the news, my heart hardens a little and I feel myself becoming less sure that we will ever have peace. I want to believe that people are good but lately there are so many examples of bad behavior that it is overwhelming me a bit.

For example, one of our local farms that allows visitors had to remind people not to harass the animals. Apparently guests have been chasing the ducks around and someone broke a ducks neck then took a huge rock and dropped it on the clutch of eggs she was protecting. Why would anyone do something so heartless? I cannot understand this cruelty and sit here stunned and heartbroken.

The political news is no better. I feel like I want to withdraw a bit but know without hope and action the bad will win and I cannot let that happen. I am sending more messages of love out into the world, maybe it will catch on and spread.

Wow, what a challenge! I just conquered a fast-moving stream by rock-hopping – talk about an adrenaline rush! Luckily, the rope helped keep everyone balanced.

After pushing through those trees, I finally emerged onto a stunning black rock beach at Lake Nordenskjöld. The water was glacial and crystal-clear, but swimming is a no-go in the park. Still, it was breathtaking – and there were even some brave souls sunbathing on the rocks!

Feeling energized, I checked my altimeter – 70 meters (230 feet) above sea level! My destination for the night, Mountain Hostel Francés, sits another 50 meters (164 feet) higher at 120 meters (394 feet). Relief washed over me – those 17 kilometers (10,56 miles) seemed much shorter now!

While hiking on the beach, I thought I was about to score some delicious Pisco Sours – I was practically celebrating already! But then I checked my map, and my heart sank. It showed a crazy distance – 3,200 kilometers (1,988 miles) or 1.5 hours left! Yikes! Thankfully, it was just a misplaced decimal point, not the end of my happy hour dreams. Phew! Back on the trail, and definitely keeping a closer eye on that map from now on! ️

Now, here I am at the base of the incredible Cuernos del Paine with the even grander Paine Grande in the distance – the park's highest peak! Between them lies the majestic Francés Valley, my reward for conquering tomorrow's hike on day three of the W Trail. My hostel is nestled between these two giants, right on another beach.

Time to ditch the complaining and embrace the adventure – climbs, descents, and epic scenery await! Here's to unplugging and soaking it all in.

In a wicked display of smoke and sound, MRL #4400 emerges out of the west portal of Bozeman Tunnel after successfully scaling the pass. The current tunnel was completed by the Northern Pacific in 1945, replacing the original 1884 bore.

For quite a few years this bird, a Common Yellowthroat, was my nemesis bird. I saw the occasional few but had never gotten a picture of one. Between two outings in the last month or so, I have been able to capture a few half decent shots, plus saw more this day at the marsh than ever before!
