Grand Canyon Village sits on a precipice at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The village is a hub of activity for tourists including many hotels, shops and restaurants. A few hotels are located directly at the edge of the canyon, 30 to 50 feet (9 to 15 m) from the drop off, providing unbelievable views right from your hotel window!

For more than a century, tourists from all over the world have visited the Grand Canyon to experience its awe-inspiring vistas. It was designated a protected area in 1893 and became a national park in February 1919. Its size is hard to comprehend; a mile deep, 277 miles long and 18 miles wide, for a total of 1,904 square miles. The Grand Canyon was carved over a period of 6 million years and is one of the most studied landscapes in the world.

According to ancient Christian stories, Viola is also the face of Christ, the Son of God. From hidden corners it stares at the faithful, the kneeling peasant, the gatherer and the shepherd. As Mary's plant, it emphasizes her humble existence in the shadow of the God who chose her, a timid little woman who cannot comprehend the salvific work of her motherhood. This especially concerns the March Violet, which, fragrant and adorned in blue, suits Mary as a desirable girl.

Secret #2: I have tried every religion/spirituality/philosophy/movement in the picture. My faith is, er, interesting. Mother is Jewish, father is atheist (formerly Episcopalian). I'm Jewish by blood, had a Bat Mitzvah, but once I got to college... well, you know. One existential crisis after another left me an atheist. Then agnostic -- a very humble position (and is why I love David Hume so much). Then I 'found' God when I took mushrooms -- not shiitake -- and I've been a deist ever since. By God, I mean higher power, no identity (no way for us to identify), unable to comprehend, the First Cause. you know. Religion scares me. That's my secret.

I'm also really pissed that I didn't add Kierkegaard in here. Despair, angst, leap of faith.... brilliant.

*Explored: Reached #50

Yesterday was a horrendous milestone as the death count of Covid-19 victims surpassed 100,000 in the US. Really hard to imagine this grim number as representing individual lives - people like you or me: artists, teachers, scientists, engineers, mothers, daughters, fathers, sons ... who have been lost. Heartbreaking and difficult to comprehend such a large number and climbing. I need to give tribute to them with flowers - I don't know of anything else I can do, knowing that nothing will fill the gaping hole of their loss.

"Thoughts"

I found a thought in my brain

Something I haven't seen in here for days

I asked before it escaped

"What brought you here to this desolate place?"

Using blood for ink, I watch my stories fade

Writing poetry with thoughts that I erased

Every phrase that never saw the light of day

Will become the only words I ever say

And I hope that somehow

My soul will calm down

As I learn to pronounce

The language I betrayed

As I sweat from my brow

And decipher these vowels

May I comprehend doubt

With thoughts that never stayed

I felt my conscience awake

It seemed to scare all my ideas away

I asked if it would behave

I wish I knew how to make it obey

Using ink for blood, I write until I'm drained

Leaving memories I hate upon the page

I don't think I'll ever see the light of day

If I leave a piece of me to pave the way

And I hope that somehow

My soul will calm down

As I learn to pronounce

The language I betrayed

As I sweat from my brow

And decipher these vowels

May I comprehend doubt

With thoughts that never stayed

And though they'd never stay

I will find a place

To sit and contemplate

Until I awaken all that I am, now

And I hope that somehow

My soul will calm down

As I learn to pronounce

The language I betrayed

As I sweat from my brow

And decipher these vowels

May I comprehend doubt

With thoughts that never stayed

I found a thought in my brain

Something I haven't seen in here for days

I watched it walk through my veins

Out through my fingertips, into the page

I’m jumping forward in my South American images to mix things up a little. This one is from Glacier Grey in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, just west of the Cordillera del Paine where we had spent the past week and a bit trekking through and exploring.

It’s hard to comprehend how big this glacier is (the kayaker in the bottom right will help to give it some scale) not just in the sheer magnitude of the ice face but also in the land coverage – at last account this ice field reportedly covered some 270 square km of land.

What is even harder to comprehend is just how much bigger it was. It’s retreat in recent years is nothing short of terrifying and heart breaking – there’s every possibility that our children may never see these incredible scenes.

The world today is changing and quickly becoming a world we once knew.

From A Distance

From a distance, the world looks blue and green

And the snow-capped mountains white

From a distance, the ocean meets the stream

And the eagle takes to flight

From a distance, there is harmony

And it echoes through the land

It's the voice of hope

It's the voice of peace

It's the voice of every man

From a distance, we all have enough

And no one is in need

And there are no guns, no bombs, and no disease

No hungry mouths to feed

From a distance, we are instruments

Marching in a common band

Playing songs of hope

Playing songs of peace

They're the songs of every man

God is watching us

God is watching us

God is watching us

From a distance

From a distance, you look like my friend

Even though we are at war

From a distance, I just cannot comprehend

What all this fighting's for

From a distance, there is harmony

And it echoes through the land

And it's the hope of hopes

It's the love of loves

It's the heart of every man (every man)

It's the hope of hopes

It's the love of loves

This is the song for every man

And God is watching us

God is watching us

God is watching us

From a distance

Oh, God is watching us

God is watching

God is watching us

Cappella degli Scrovegni, Padua, Italy

The Scrovegni Chapel , also known as the Arena Chapel, is a small church, adjacent to the Augustinian monastery, the Monastero degli Eremitani in Padua, region of Veneto, Italy. The chapel and monastery are now part of the complex of the Museo Civico of Padua.

The chapel contains a fresco cycle by Giotto, completed about 1305 and considered to be an important masterpiece of Western art. In 2021, the chapel was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the 14th-century fresco cycles comprehending 8 historical buildings in Padua city centre. Specifically the Scrovegni Chapel contains the most important frescoes that marked the beginning of a revolution in mural painting and influenced fresco technique, style, and content for a whole century.

It is often difficult to comprehend and appreciate the size and scale of a glacier until you’ve seen it from the air. Mendenhall Glacier here for example is 13.6 miles long, 3.8 miles wide, around 2000 feet at its deepest, and rises from beneath sea level to over 6200 feet in elevation.

Having seen glaciers from a distance on foot in Iceland, it was a completely different experience to see one via helicopter. We flew over the glacier for several minutes before landing on a flat area for some hiking. A few things that amazed me while flying overhead though was how deep the crevasses were, how insanely blue the ponds of melted glacier water were, and how far the ice field stretched up into the mountains. But most of all, the sheer size of the glacier was just incredible.

The other remarkable thing was the visible path of dirt and sediment that revealed the flow of the glacier as it bent around the curves of the mountains on its way to the sea. The path must have represented decades of movement.

If you ever get a chance to visit Juneau, Alaska the Mendenhall Glacier is definitely worth a visit!

Rose Red, Rose Red, Rose Red

Snow White, Snow White, Snow White

You used to call me Rose Red

How could I ever forget?

Full of love and passion you said

Now I'm full of hatred and filled with dread

We had a bond that was stronger than they could ever comprehend

And you know that people fear what they don't quite understand

Rose Red, Rose Red, Rose Red

Snow White, Snow White, Snow White

You used to call me Snow White

A snowflake shining bright

Full of serenity and light

Now my heart is suffering from frostbite

We had a bond that was stronger than they could ever comprehend

We are one, we could do anything if you just hold my hand

We had a bond that was stronger than they could ever comprehend

And you know that people fear what they don't quite understand

Rose Red, Rose Red, Rose Red

Snow White, Snow White, Snow White

All the tears that I have shed

When they took you away, Rose Red

I cried myself to sleep each night

Since we were forced apart, Snow White

We had a bond that was stronger than they could ever comprehend

We are one, we could do anything if you just hold my hand

We had a bond that was stronger than they could ever comprehend

And you know that people fear what they don't quite understand

"Knowledge"

by Jacob Lee

Sit close

Let me tell you every truth I know

I could read you poetry and prose

We could contemplate the syllables

If you so wish for it

If so

Let your consciousness dissolve like snow

Watch the branches replicate your bones

Place the precious palms among your own

Be the water and the boat, and so I stow

Every thought that lies inside of me

Atop the shelves, amidst my library

So when you're older you may visit me

When I'm at peace

Patiently, I reach up above

I can see the ocean as I stare at the stars

I will place my knowledge in your hands

It's okay if you don't understand just yet

Speak slow

Let me ask before I take a note

May I read a couple words you wrote?

Every page you touch, the letters glow

From the ashes do we grow

And I boast

I can comprehend the words you spoke

You're the writer and the quote, and so I hope

Every thought that lies inside of me

Someday finds its way from soul to speech

So I may bestow our legacy

Like you to me

Patiently, I reach up above

I can read the ocean as I write with the stars

I will place your knowledge in my hands

Flick a page until I understand, I do, oh

Like trying to speak while remaining in silence

Like facing your fears without feeling frightened

I'll never know if I'm yet to try it

I'll do my best to stay open-minded

Patiently, I reach up above

I can see the ocean as I stare at the stars

I will place my knowledge in your hands

Flick a page until I understand, I do, oh

Patiently, I reach up above

I can read the ocean as I write with the stars

I will place your knowledge in my hands

Flick a page until understand, I do, oh

Ain't no goin' back no more, no more

We're in the same bed, cannot lay awake

Let's fill up this space with us

You make me feel brand new

Oh, I feel it comin', got a rush like I'm runnin'

No, don't go lookin' for somethin'

Oh, I feel it comin', got a rush like I'm runnin'

No, don't go lookin' for somethin'

Oh, oh, oh...

So you seem to think you're invisible

You're so far from silhouette

You tell on yourself between every word

And leave all this room for me

Butterfly, yeah

I miss feelin' for you

Oh, I feel it comin', got a rush like I'm runnin'

No, don't go lookin' for somethin'

Oh, I feel it comin', got a rush like I'm runnin'

No, don't go lookin' for somethin'

You speak in dictionaries while fearing less than over understand

Virgo moon, I'm so used to your dance

Tongue too swole to comprehend

I see you duck and dodge at every bend

Afraid to play your card, be forced to show your hand

I hope you take from this that it'll make you no less of a man

To break your walls and simply grab my hand

Love shouldn't be contraband

It shouldn't treble on your confidence

Shouldn't be seen as less than compliments

So I probably am insane, I don't care, I applied an awakening to this moment, for me personally I never see a road, I see demonstrational neurological existential consciousness, ready to send out the little messengers of thoughts of which we are all in the driving seat, master this and you master the Universe. Imagine if you would, realising that thinking decides reality and a new universe can be created from thus an infinitesimal moment's conjuring, it can be mind blowing and frightening to yield that level of conscience, be mindful of your thoughts but what an incredible playground of exploration awaits if we could ever can comprehend the absolute freedom that awaits, so go ahead Angel, blow my mind, I am ready!

when I see those Northern landscapes, many mythological tales come to mind and I comprehend how they originated

Beautiful isn't it?

I read an article which indicated this is the second most photographed spot in Yellowstone.

It is, of course, the Lower Falls, envisaged from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. There are more famous and larger falls in the United States (see Niagara Falls), and a far more famous Grand Canyon. There are more colorful locations within Yellowstone (see Grand Prismatic Spring), and more popular (see Old Faithful Geyser). And yet, there is magnificence; if you had only seen this spot in your travels to Yellowstone, you would come away in awe.

In 1870, an expedition led by Henry Washburn, Surveyor-General of Montana, toured the area that would 2-years later become Yellowstone National Park. Nathaniel Pitt Langford, a member of the expedition, wrote of his experience a few hundred yards from this view, "The place where I obtained the best and most terrible view of the canyon was a narrow projecting point situated two to three miles below the lower fall. Standing there or rather lying there for greater safety, I thought how utterly impossible it would be to describe to another the sensations inspired by such a presence. As I took in the scene, I realized my own littleness, my helplessness, my dread exposure to destruction, my inability to cope with or even comprehend the might architecture of nature."

Visit Yellowstone. See for yourself.

Today is Memorial Day in the United States of America.

I read this recently, from a book written by our former president and commander of allied forces in Europe in WWII, Dwight D. Eisenhower

"We believe individual liberty, rooted in human dignity, is man's greatest treasure."

Today is to honor the ultimate sacrifice the few made over the sands of time, so we can have & enjoy this "individual liberty" they gave everything for.

🎼[Sands Of Iwo Jima (The Drive By Truckers)] 🎼

🎼[Sands Of Iwo Jima (The Drive By Truckers Live)] 🎼

George A. was at the movies in December '41

They announced it in the lobby what had just gone on

He drove up from Birmingham back to the family's farm

Thought he'd get him a deferment there's was much work to be done

He was a family man, even in those days

But Uncle Sam decided he was needed anyway

In the South Pacific over half a world away

He believed in God and Country, things was just that way

Just that way....

When I was just a kid I spent every weekend

On the farm that he grew up on so I guess so did I

And we'd stay up watching movies on the black and white TV

We watched "The Sands of Iwo Jima" starring John Wayne

Every year in June George A. goes to a reunion

Of the men that he served with and their wives and kids and grandkids

My Great Uncle used to take me and I'd watch them recollect

About some things I couldn't comprehend

And I thought about that movie, asked if it was that way

He just shook his head and smiled at me in such a loving way

As he thought about some friends he will never see again

He said "I never saw John Wayne on the sands of Iwo Jima"

Most of those men are gone now but he goes still every year

And George A's still doing fine, especially for his years

He's still living on that homestead in the house that he was born in

And I sure wish I could go see him today

He never drove a new car though he could easily afford it

He'd just buy one for the family and take whatever no one wanted

He said a shiny car didn't mean much after all the things he'd seen

George A. never saw John Wayne on the sands of Iwo Jima

... sometimes all looks a little bit different. I need this distance from time to time in my life. It is not always easy for me and there are moments where you would like to disappear. My retreat is in the high Swiss mountains, where silence and clear nature are the key. By my "little paradise", I got fresh energy to my soul through the beautiful purity of nature. Actually I feel nowhere closer to my Creator as in the mountains and He fulfills my life with meaning.

I wish you all that you can find a distance, so that you can touch the important things in life a little bit better.

Thanks for your so appreciated friendship, which has already carried me through a lot. Very warm thanks to all my flickr friends.

Kind regards

Erwin

From a distance

The world looks blue and green

And the snow capped mountains white

From a distance

The ocean meets the stream

And the eagle takes to flight

From a distance

There is harmony

And it echoes through the land

It's the voice of hope

It's the voice of peace

It's the voice of every man

From a distance

We all have enough

And no one is in need

And there are no guns, no bombs and no disease

No hungry mouths to feed

From a Distance

We are instruments

Marching in a common band

Playing songs of hope

Playing songs of peace

They are the songs of every man

God is watching us

From a distance

From a distance

You look like my friend

Even though we are at war

From a distance

I just cannot comprehend

What all this fightings for

From a distance

There is harmony

And it echoes through the land

And it's the hope of hopes

It's the love of loves

It's the heart of every man

It is difficult to comprehend the feeling of worry & tumult that I can't help absorbing from the chaotic events in the news each day. The beauty of Mother Nature (if we don't destroy her) provides solace, for it seems that this is truly ... "The winter of our discontent." ~ William Shakespeare

Hope seems tenuous, but I can't stop believing that the spirit of love will overcome all the hatred that has been unleashed ... "No winter lasts forever; no spring skips it turn." ~ Hal Borland

God is so generous that He gives us grace that we do not deserve, love we cannot comprehend and mercy that we cannot resist.

And from Acropolis and its museum, let me take you for a late afternoon walk, circa 2Kms to the East, where Kallimarmaro Stadion (literal translation is beautiful marble) is located, known also as Panathenaic Stadium. It's entirely built of marble this one too and it's one of the main attractions in Athens. This is the 50.000 seats stadium that hosted the Zappas Olympics, an early attempt to revive the ancient Olympic Games, which were held at the stadium in 1870 and 1875. Later that same century, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and was the venue for 4 of the 9 contested sports! Many of you might have heard of it, as it was used as an Olympic venue in 2004 Olympics. It is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon and it is also the last venue in Greece from where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place. I went there right after our walk to Acropolis, late in the afternoon that day and thought it would be nice if I could take a couple of shots from inside.

Unfortunately it was closed for the day but ... not for me. You see here's the thing. I was born, raised and still live very near by. Practically I grew up playing in this place (there and at the well known Zappeion and National Garden, right across the road if you check it out on the map), so I know all the ins and outs like the palm of my hand. Therefore this place, while it's living history and a so significant place to visit and see for many people around the world, for me it is also a place, where I have lots of childhood memories and I still visit quiet many times a month and especially when I want to clear my head from everyday life and the "noise" it carries with it. One won't know what peace of mind really is, until one sits in one of those seats and become one with late night silence and the history it carries within! It's only then that one begins to come close in comprehending the real impact of such a place upon one's self!

To me, this place is... home!

So there I was, walking into the surrounding pathway to get a couple night shots, of my childhood's playground! Hope you'll like and enjoy as much as I did!!! :-)

It's always exciting to explore a new place such as A Favela I am hoping not to get into too much trouble here. I feel as if I am being scrutinized, but I don't understand why. I am just walking down a public street. I remember being in other places that gave me that same chill. As if I were unwelcome for reasons I could not comprehend. What do you mean by "

Clowntime is Over"? I wasn't clowning, my friend.

In 1980 Elvis Costello and the Attractions released two full-length LPs, Get Happy in February and Taking Liberties in November. A total of 40 tracks, if I recall correctly. This is the alternate take on a song that apeared on both in different versions. Obviously one of my favorites! 🎼

Moving forward using all my breath

Making love to you was never second best

I saw the world thrashing all around your face

Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace

I'll stop the world and melt with you

You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time

There's nothing you and I won't do

I'll stop the world and melt with you

(You should know better)

Dream of better lives the kind which never hate

(You should see why)

Dropped in the state of imaginary grace

(You should know better)

I made a pilgrimage to save this humans race

(You should see why)

What I'm comprehending a race that long gone bye

(I'll stop the world)

I'll stop the world and melt with you

(I'll stop the world)

You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time

(Let's stop the world)

There's nothing you and I won't do

(Let's stop the world)

I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

(Let's stop the world)

I'll stop the world and melt with you

(Let's stop the world)

I've seen some changes but it's getting better all the time

(Let's stop the world)

There's nothing you and I won't do

(Let's stop the world)

I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

hmmm hmmm hmmm

hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm

hmmm hmmm hmmm

hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm

I'll stop the world and melt with you

(Let's stop the world)
