"Kathyrn is a hamlet in southern Alberta under the jurisdiction of Rocky View County. A Canadian National Railway line runs northeast through Kathyrn towards Three Hills.

Neil McKay, a local farmer and large landowner, named this hamlet after his daughter. He had offered some of his land to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company in 1911 for a townsite, on the provision that he be permitted to give it a name. When the station was finally built in 1913, the painter who was in charge of the sign misspelled Kathryn and the settlement became known as Kathyrn. The post office opened January 1, 1919.

Rocky View County's 2013 municipal census counted a population of 20 in Kathyrn, a 42.9% change from its 2006 municipal census population of 14." From Wikipedia.

WINTER arrived two days ago, on 14 October 2020! Our world turned white overnight, but thankfully the snow melted fairly quickly.

Friday, 16 October 2020: our temperature just after noon is 0C (windchill -5C). Sunrise is at 8:02 am and sunset is at 6:39 pm. We are under a Snow Squall Watch today - not sure if I have ever seen that kind of warning before. Ice pellets are forecast for this afternoon, though the sun has just come out and the sky has patches of blue.

Five days ago, on 11 October 2020, I finally did a drive NE of the city to see several barns and other things that I was really hoping to see again. I had checked the weather forecast and it was not good for the coming week - rain, rain/snow or flurries. I knew I had better get myself organized and delay no longer. As it was, the forecast for this day worsened in the afternoon - and it was right.

My furthest point north was to quickly call in at Irricana, to photograph the beautiful outdoor mural of the grain elevators that had once stood, but no longer exist. Irricana is a small town whose name is a contraction of the words "irrigation canals", which are found around the Irricana area. I had first seen this mural, and others, three years ago with my daughter.

"One of the largest pieces local artist Glen Collin ever worked on was a mural he painted that now stands at the entrance for the Town of Irricana. The mural portrays the two Irricana grain elevators while they were still standing. The mural took Collin approximately three full years from painting to installation in 2013."

Another thing I really wanted to see again was one of my favourite old barns. It is still in use, though unfortunately the cupola fell off the roof to the ground since 2017. I was expecting to see a few sheep in the field by the barn and was surprised to see none. However, when I turned my car around to continue my drive, there they were, resting in a field the other side of the road.

A few more barns, a number of skyscapes, and one duckling added to my few hours away from the city. I am always thankful that I am able to explore the backroads and see what I can find. Especially appropriate on the Thanksgiving weekend.

I want to let you all know, I have chronic Lyme Disease, I started the first portion of my treatment and have not been feeling all that well, I have to go in and have a PICC placed in my arm then I'll be starting IV treatment. I'm not telling you this to get sympathy, I just wanted you to know why I haven't been in commenting and liking all your beautiful photos. I like all of you and don't want to loose contact with any of you. I will come in, when I can spend time and look at ALL the beautiful shots I have missed. I really do Luv to look at all your photography.

Thank you and Blessed Be

Community

In our community we make friends from all around the world. I have known Marci Ansen for several years now, she is in Australia and I am in Canada. We met on Flickr and have exchanged correspondences over those years, discussing many topics. Music and art being at the top.

Marci shared a photo with me of a bench that she passes on a regular basis. Early in the COVID 19 shutdown, someone had written a phrase on the bench and Marci took a photo of it and shared it with me:

“See the space in between as a gift of Life and Love”

Marci is one determined girl. She managed to track down the author of that phrase, arranged for permission to use it, found an organization and made up some t-shirts with the phrase on it to raise some funds for the organization.

But she also saw the phrase working between friends, friends from a distance, an ocean away. So she asked to use one of my photos and then she put the two of us on the bench with the phrase between us.

I am very proud to have this gift t-shirt from Marci and I hope one day that I can travel to Australia and the two of can go to that bench and take a proper photo together. If you would like a similar t-shirt just message me and I shall see what I can do.

In the far southwest suburbs of Chicago is the City of Sandwich, Illinois. The city has a population of 7,000 and is open-market for trash collection. Headquartered in Sandwich, Illinois is Community Disposal.

Community Disposal is a 5-truck operation and was founded in 1957. I wasn't aware of the company until I happened to spot a red rear loader while searching for another local company. At the time this picture was taken, this was their newest truck. This truck was seen in Sandwich collecting manual recycling.

The company's website has a slideshow that features their trucks throughout the company's 60 years in business: www.communitydisposal1957.com

This traffic signal box is a part of the Craigieburn Road Legacy Art trail.

As part of the Craigieburn Road Upgrade, Major Road Projects Victoria worked with local artists and the community to reimagine and reinvent public spaces through a signal box art trail.

Local artists were invited to contribute to a vibrant art trail featuring 30 traffic signal cabinets along Craigieburn Road. Each piece of public art tells the story of "What makes Craigieburn unique," serving as the main theme of the art installation. The artwork also celebrates sub-themes such as community, connection, travel, history, culture, diversity, environment, nature, and sustainability.

I watched this woman walk up the path toward this doe that was standing right at the edge of the blacktop. She stopped within arms length of the doe and was talking to it for a good minute.

The doe just stood there placidly, and when the lady said goodbye and kept going, the doe calmly went on it's way across the path.

The deer have become pretty blase about humans at this park!

Every time going to Getty, just have to take a picture or two of these chairs. When they're empty, they seem to be the "people" being there sitting around the tables talking or just resting there, it's like a community of them.
