Black Kite
Scientific Name: Milvus migrans
Description: The Black Kite is a medium-sized raptor (bird of prey). From a distance, it appears almost black, with a light brown bar on the shoulder. The plumage is actually dark brown, with scattered light brown and rufous markings, particularly on the head, neck and underparts. The tail is forked and barred with darker brown. This feature gives the bird its alternative name of Fork-tailed Kite. The eye is dark brown and the bill is black with a yellow cere (area of skin around the nostrils). Both sexes are similar. Young Black Kites are generally lighter in colour than the adults, and have a comparatively shallower forked tail.
Similar species: The Black Kite's plumage is similar to other raptors (birds of prey), such as the Little Eagle, Hieraaetus morphnoides, Whistling Kite,Haliastur sphenurus, and Square-tailed Kite, Lophoictinia isura. In flight, however, its long forked tail and almost unmarked underwing make it unmistakable.
Distribution: The Black Kite's range covers the majority of the Australian mainland, as well as Africa, Asia and Europe. The Black Kite is arguably the most numerous species of raptor in the world.
Habitat: The Black Kite is found in a variety of habitats, from timbered watercourses to open plains, and is often observed in and around outback towns. Although it is more normally seen in small groups, the Black Kite may form huge flocks of many thousands of birds, especially during grasshopper plagues. No other Australian bird of prey is seen in such large flocks.
Feeding: The Black Kite preys on lizards, small mammals and insects, especially grasshoppers. It also is a scavenger, and frequents tips in outback towns. Black Kites also gather in flocks around bush fires, and eagerly pounce on small animals as these flee the flames. Both live and dead (carrion) prey is eaten.
Breeding: Black Kites nest in isolated pairs or in small, scattered colonies. As with other raptors, a ritualised aerial courtship display is performed by both sexes. This involves loud calling, grappling of feet (talons), and tumbling or cartwheeling. The nest is a bulky cup of sticks, lined with softer material, and is placed in the fork of a tree branch (generally close to the trunk). The female incubates the eggs while the male provides food.
Calls: The call is a descending whistle "psee-err" followed by a staccato "si-si-si-si-si".
Maximum Size: 55cm
Average size: 51cm
Average weight: 540g
Breeding season: Usually August and November; can breed at any time
Clutch Size: One to three.
Incubation: 28 days
Nestling Period: 40 days

Sunrise on a misty morning. Lembang, Indonesia.
September 2013.
It was interesting to see families and communities living on these slopes. I have disabled comments for "Life on these slopes - Part I" because it is a close up of a section of the larger area and scene captured in "Life on these slopes - Part II". Part II was shot at sunrise and Part I was shot approximately 15 minutes after the sun had risen.
With each sunrise, and especially at the dawn of a new year, I look back and am grateful for all the hits and misses of 2013, and for all the good and bad times. Let's journey on, staying rooted and anchored, neither distracted by success or failure.

Funniest comment I ever got while painting today...Watching you is like seeing Jesus reborn. I was like "Not quite, but thanks for the kind words" Anywho I enjoyed this freestyle as it's the last thing i'll be painting in the ol home town for a while...time is to travel! As part of my birthday celebration my husband took me for a drive in the countryside, which we haven't visited for a while. The day was cold (almost -20oC with windchill of -28oC in the city, I have no idea what it was like in the countryside..) and sunny with beautiful blue sky. It was wonderful! We have stopped here and there and I had a chance to test some more the Fujis (it's part of my husband's campaign to get me to switch from my Sony cameras ;D) Lots of beautiful sites with frosted trees and fresh snow on the ground. In this shot I have even managed to capture rainbow in the woods. A very lucky shot, because I have taken a few of those in this location and it was the only one that has managed to capture that. Must have been the right angle ;D

This striking photograph captures the exquisite beauty of a rose in full bloom, its petals unfurling to reveal rich, velvety crimsons that speak of passion and depth. The delicate stamens at the center offer a burst of golden yellow, a stark contrast to the deep reds. Around the central masterpiece, tender buds and crisp green leaves frame the flower, hinting at the continual cycle of growth and renewal. The soft-focus background ensures that the rose commands the viewer's full attention, inviting onlookers into a moment of natural elegance and serene beauty.
Jason De Caires Taylor named this sculpture Vicissitudes, commenting on the future trajectories of these children.
This sculpture was seen in the Molinere Beausejour Marine Protected Area, Grenada. This was the first of the underwater sculpture parks created by Taylor, who has more than 1,200 underwater sculptures in Australia, UK, Cyprus, France, Maldives, Indonesia, Mexico and Bahamas.
The sculpture park in Grenada was founded in 2006 and Vicissitudes was added in 2007. Initially, Vicissitudes was intended to be the community of children holding hands and looking toward their futures. But as the currents modified these sculptures, some had to be propped up, and these were tied together for stability. Many people (including me) interpreted the ties as manacles, and the sculpture a reminder of slavery in the history of Grenada.
Taylor fully intended that his sculptures be colonized by the species looking for a place to live on a healthy marine surfaces.

Aquaman:
I used an Old Rep. trooper torso and legs. The head was going to be used on a Moon Knight, but I like it here. The shoulder pauldron was on a terrible BvS version of aquaman. Not much else.
Batman Armor:
The fig is pretty simple itself, but I found that green wire and used it to make it look like (Bane :P) kryptonite.
Deathstroke:
Major paintjob on this guy. I pretty much just changed all the color on the antman torso and added a few of my own details on the arms. The head was on Quicksilver and so was the hair. So I guess it's quicksilver.
