Calakmul (also Kalakmul) was a powerful Mayan city during the classical period. Along with El Mirador and Tikal, Calakmul is one of the largest Mayan cities ever discovered. Calakmul is located around 300 km southeast of the city of Campeche (Mexico) in the state of the same name.

Calakmul spread over an area of approximately 30 square kilometers and had over 100 colossal buildings; a total of more than 5000 buildings are known. The so-called "structures" I and II dominate here. The latter has a height of approx. 45 meters. However, most of Calakmul has not been excavated or explored in depth. Only speculations can be made about the population. A population of around 50,000 people is assumed for the city center.

The Wall is a colossal fortification which stretches for 100 leagues (300 miles) along the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms, defending the realm from the wildlings who live beyond. The Wall is reported to be over 700 feet tall and is made of solid ice. It was supposedly constructed using both magic and mundane means some eight millennia ago, in the aftermath of the Long Night to defend the realm against the White Walkers who apparently dwell in the far north, though they are now considered myths by most.

The Wall is defended and held by the Sworn Brothers of the Night's Watch. Once an honorable institution, the Watch has fallen on hard times by the time of the War of the Five Kings. It has become grievously undermanned, numbering less than a thousand men, an all-time low. While once great glory and honor was to be had in the Watch, in the present day it is often seen as a glorified penal colony.

The current headquarters of the Watch is Castle Black, located in the shadow of the Wall at the northern end of the Kingsroad. Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, located at the eastern end of the Wall, serves as the main port and resupply post for the Night's Watch. The Shadow Tower at the western end of the Wall is the only other manned castle. Among the abandoned castles along the length of the Wall is the Nightfort, the first fortress built on the Wall and the original headquarters of the Night's Watch. The region south of the Wall is called the Gift, bestowed to the Night's Watch by House Stark thousands of years ago to supply the Night's Watch with food and provisions.

What can I say.. When facing the raw power of a waterfall of this height, while walking on a bridge that crosses a smaller but also powerful waterfall, my body was charged with adrenaline and my brain was pumping dopamine. Sometimes nature can affect me in that way. It was awe inspiring to say the very least. I was looking mother Earth right in the eye, as she has no problem displaying her authority and beauty for all to see. It was colossal!

Happy Wine Wednesday

CU-T1250, an Ilyushin IL-96-300, on approach to runway 06L at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario. It was arriving as CUB190 (Cubana de Aviacion S.A) from Santiago, Cuba.

The IL-96-300 is a very rare bird, as only 34 units have been built. Only 15 of those were operating when this photograph was taken. This example first flew on July 26, 2005 and was delivered to Cubana on December 30, 2005.

This rock up close reminded me of something out of Lord of the Rings, some castle or fortress with all of the columns and details. I was mesmerized.

A Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) was framed during a stretching out morning exercise of wings with a perfect symmetry. It looks as if it was giving the hug invitation to the near sitting partner. I love the typical pose here with perfect lighting as well as crisp detail and a smooth background. Pics was taken from Dwarka sector in Gujrat, India.

If you have a dog in the family, you know that we dogs are larger than life. We bring you happiness, we bring you serenity. We bring a smile to your lips when you witness our silliness, and an ache to your heart when you are watching that silliness and suddenly think that one day we will no longer be at your side. We are the most loyal friend you will ever know.

And all we ask in return is that you treat us with the respect that we deserve. When you do that, when you prove in all the ways you are able that you love us, we will go to the ends of the Earth for you. We will defend you to the death.

And even when you fall short of proving your love, we will be there, patiently waiting for the day that you finally understand that you will never find a more dedicated, honest, loving companion.

Is that okay, Dad?

"I..(sniff-sniff)...I..."

I'll take that for a yes.

It is difficult to represent Hadid's Dongdaemun Design Plaza in images. Too many spectacular views. Focusing on details seems to be more impressive. This shot gives context to my photo from yesterday which I consider to be more interesting.

Rome's Colosseum is a stunning sight, whether from the inside or outside. Built between AD72 and AD80, it is the largest amphitheatre ever constructed, and held 50,000 to 80,000 spectators for gladiator fights and other spectacles (Wikipedia.org).

Acueducto de Segovia

It was built around the first century AD to channel water from springs in the mountains 17 kilometres (11 mi) away to the Roman city's fountains, public baths and private houses, and was in use until 1973. At Plaza de Díaz Sanz, the structure makes an abrupt turn and heads toward Plaza Azoguejo. It is there the monument begins to display its full splendor. At its tallest, the aqueduct reaches a height of 28.5 m (93 ft 6 in)

Nile, colossal marble sculpture datable to the 1st century AD, currently located in the New Wing of the Vatican Museums. The Nile River is depicted as a bearded old man lying on his side with his head crowned with Egyptian leaves and fruit, an allusion to the fertility of the fields ensured by water; in fact, when it overflowed, it left a very precious silt which made the soil fertile for the crops. Therefore, the sixteen putti that enliven the scene allude to the sixteen cubits of water, i.e. the level reached by the Nile during the flood season. The sculpture, datable to the 1st-2nd century, is a Roman replica of an Egyptian sculptural original, made of black basalt and, according to Pliny the Elder, placed by Vespasian in the Temple of Peace in Rome

In 62 BC, King Antiochus I of Commagene built a tomb-sanctuary on the mountain top of Mount Nemrut flanked by huge statues 8–9-metre high of himself, two lions, two eagles, and various composite Greek and Iranian gods, such as Heracles-Artagnes-Ares, Zeus-Oromasdes, and Apollo-Mithras-Helios-Hermes.

The statues were once seated, with names of each god inscribed on them.

Mount Nemrut or Nemrud (Turkish: Nemrut Dağı) is a mountain in southeastern Turkey and 2134 meter high.

In 1987 it was added to the Unesco World Heritage List.

This shot was taken inside Colossal Cave, outside of Tucson, Arizona. This happens to be the largest dry cave in the U.S. Soon after its discovery, explorers and visitors would break off stalactites as souvenirs. This picture shows the remnants of the damage they caused with only stumps left behind on the cave roof.

Built nearly 2,000 years ago, the colosseum is an amazing structure that is still impressive today.

It is believed to be named because of a colossal statue of Nero that was near it, and I like the story that Nero's head was replaced several times by the heads of succeeding emperors...

The next morning atmosphere in the house was frozen as the Aunties gave the Uncles the silent treatment.

We went for a walk along Hurst Spit this morning and saw the biggest crow I have ever seen. Everyone who saw it commented on it's size. This guy was huuuge so maybe it was a raven - I am sure someone out there will let me know.

Dawn breaks, it is 6:00 am and I find myself enveloped by the hypostyle hall of the Karnak temple.

Probably I will never forget this moment in life.

The colossal ones.

And one of them is more colossal than the others.

It weighs 'only' 88 tons.

A legendary natural scenery:

Tongariki, whose name refers to easterly winds, is located on the eastern end of the south coast of Easter Island in a land of great scenic beauty. On your left I saw the Poike volcano, the oldest on the island, whose eruptions gave rise to the peninsula of the same name and where, according to tradition, the battle between “the long ears” and “the short ears” took place. At its top I saw the crater now covered with a small eucalyptus forest. Its southern slope descends by steep cliffs to the level of the sea where the volcanic rocks form the cove of Hanga Nui (big bay).

In the background the islet known as Motu Maratiri stands, which in ancient times served as a refuge for many people during tribal conflicts and is the setting for several myths and legends.

To the right there is a tiny fishing port known as Hanga Iti (small bay) and several caves including Ana Havea, home of leader Poie during his war against the Kainga clan.

Finally, in front of the ahu, the impressive southeast face of the Rano Raraku volcano rises, the origin of most of the statues that have made the island famous.

A while back I spent a day at Wyming Brook in the Peak District with my good friend Phillip. It's amazing, the trees are huge and tower over the water like giants.

Basant Panchami/Date (2024)

Wed, 14 Feb, 2024

Bali and Indonesia observe the day as Hari Raya Saraswati, with educational institutions worshiping the goddess and children offering sweets and fruits during prayers.

Basant Panchami, or Vasant Panchami, is a festival that heralds the approach of spring and is widely observed with great zeal and passion in many Indian cities. The following describes how Basant Panchami is observed in various cities: West Bengal is one of the East Indian states where Goddess Saraswati is most enthusiastically adored. The goddess of learning, wisdom, music, and the other arts is revered as Saraswati.

Esperò Real Tower - Sulis Square.

In the square, the center of Alghero's city life, is the imposing mass of the Esperò Real tower (the name means Royal Spur Tower ), built in the first half of the 16th century to replace an older military structure.

23 m high, the tower has a very interesting interior, composed of large overlapping rooms, connected by a helical staircase.

The Torre dello Sperone takes its name from the presence, close to it, of an offshoot of the fortification, a spur.

Today it is better known by the name of " Sulis Tower " given to it after the Cagliari revolutionary Vincenzo Sulis was locked up there, spending twenty-two years of isolation inside.

Built in the first half of the 16th century, it constituted one of the bulwarks of the Alghero fortification and is certainly among the most majestic towers in the city: walls 6 meters thick for three floors with very high vaults, supported by enormous ribs; all floors are connected to each other through an internal helical staircase created in the thickness of the wall.

The large cannons placed on the side of the tower were placed there in the early 1970s, after being recovered from a Spanish galleon that sank off the coast of Alghero around 1500.
