The Highland (Scottish Gaelic: Bò Ghàidhealach; Scots: Hielan coo) is a Scottish breed of rustic beef cattle. It originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Western Islands of Scotland and has long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, able to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region. The first herd-book dates from 1885; two types – a smaller island type, usually black, and a larger mainland type, usually dun – were registered as a single breed. It is reared primarily for beef, and has been exported to several other countries.

These cold snowy days have forced me to show off its winter coat for Happy Truck Thursday!

Two of Carload Expresses newest locomotives shove a cut of coil cars across the Monongahela River to Glenwood Yard. Once in the yard they will cut away from the cars and pick up their train to interchange with the W&LE at Bruceton. CLXX 6001 and 6002 are two of six SD60M locomotives purchased from Norfolk Southern in early 2019. After mechanical work and a fresh coat of paint they began arriving from MEI in December 2020.

The first wave of the storm arrived in the wee hours of the morning with thunder, snow squalls, and continued high winds. The snow covered all except the steepest rock faces and the areas protected by the overhang of White Rim Sandstone. A layer of ice coated many of the rock surfaces as the snow melted initially and then froze. A brief respite in the storm with a few breaks in the clouds after sunrise allowed a view toward the Maze District of Canyonlands NP, including Ekker Butte in the center of the frame.

If you ever are in Copenhagen, you need to try the mini Strawberry cakes. Especially in Summer, where they are made with Danish Strawberries (sugar coated) and pistachio... mmmmmmhmm :-)

The winter storm of two days ago left structures and the shoreline coated with ice and snow. What a difference a day can make!

Deep inside a beech forest. Not a person for miles, nothing that you can see moving, yet the air is full of the sounds of movement.

For the last Macro Mondays working the themes each day with the renaissance, i knew the face Pareidolia would have to come from wood, in renaissance time the woodworkers finding a face in the wood grain the first thing to determine was was it good or evil. if evil the wood was burnt if good then the craft went on to make something knowing the guarding was with them.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

I liked the colourful coat on this horse in the fields beyond Loosely Row. Taken on my walk last week

After 10 years on the roster sporting it's maroon colors, NBSR 6315 finally got it's new coat of green NBSR paint, and they're powering a late, and short, 19 car, train 908 at Welsford, New Brunswick. A friendly wave from the hogger was also a nice touch.

I must admit, I don't usually stop and photograph this particular bit of Mam Tor / Rushup. Looks a bit more glamorous with it's winter coat on!

A carnivorous animal in the same family as weasels, badgers, mink etc. that lives primarily on a diet of fish but also includes frogs, crayfish, crabs and even a few waterfowl.

A coat of long guard hairs over their insulated underfur keeps them warm and dry so they can stay comfortable throughout the North American winters. They are very successful at hunting prey in our rivers, streams and ponds aided by their webbed feet, long muscular tail and sharp claws coupled with the ability to hold their breath for extended periods. As a preventative measure to becoming waterlogged they do spend a lot of time on land and enter the water only to hunt or travel much unlike the sea otters that spend most of their lives in the ocean. An overland sprint of 10 to 18 miles while searching for prey is not uncommon.

River otters seem to have the ability to live alone or in pairs but are quick to socialize in groups when other members are encountered. After mating and going through a gestation period of 80 - 90 days a female will give birth to 1 - 5 pups in a den called a holt or couch which she excavates under tree roots or a cache of rocks. Prior to the birth the female called a bitch or sow will drive the male (dog or boar) away and the pups or cubs will be tended to by the female and older offspring if still around. The pups will begin emerging from the den at about 1 month of age and mom will entice them into the water for their first swim at about 2 months. After the pups are weaned dad may return and help raise the juveniles until probably 1 year of age. Females attain sexual maturity at 2 years of age and males at 3.

River otters range in size from 10 to 33 lbs and 2.5 to 5 ' in length with females being about 1/3 the size of males. When not hunting prey they spend much time playing and frolicking with each other. This individual is one of a trio that has clawed its way onto the ice to enjoy the spoils caught underwater.

American Red Squirrel.

Between 10 5/8 and 15 1/4 inches long. The smallest tree squirrel in its range. Rust-red to grayish red above, brightest on sides; white or grayish-white below. In winter black lines separate reddish back from whitish belly. Tail is similar to back color, but is outlined with broad black band edged with white. In summer its coat is duller. In winter has prominent ear tufts.

They are often abundant in any kind of forest: natural coniferous forests, pine plantations, mixed or hardwood forests; often around buildings.

They range throughout much of Alaska and Canada; in the continental United States south through the Rocky Mountain states and east from Iowa to north Virginia. They are also in the Alleghenies.

Kensington Metropark, Livingston County, Michigan.

He seems to be a juvenile, curious about everything and lacks natural fear of other species.

Many thanks to all those who view, fav or comment my pictures. It is much appreciated.

Imported fur coats from Alaska - looks like it's going to be a cold winter. Mom and the kid.

A drone photo from above the Cuillin ridge from my Skye trip in November, on a perfect winter day. I must admit one of my best ever memories was doing the ridge in summer, , and even though I've done a few sections in winter under snow and ice, I don't think I'c be up to doing the whole ridge in such conditions. My favourite stretch in winter was a day on Pinnacle ridge on Sgurr Nan Gillean which is the prominent mountain in this view. The cloud inversion made it so special. Coats of Ice is by Damien Jurado. I need to head north again soon if there's a chance of snow.

What do you do when you and your daughter walk into a store and both fall in love with the same coat????
