An eastbound CSX mixed freight, led by CM44AH 7500 and SD70MAC 4765, soars high above the Ohio & Erie Canal and the Cuyahoga River valley on a picture-perfect spring morning.

With permission to come south to work North Yard, Q541-16 is lead by CSX 7009, a rebuilt GE CM44AH, pulls under the new overpass of US Highway 41.

May 7, 2020: An SD40-2 EMD in YN3 paint, leads a rebuilt CM44AH GE engine in YN3b paint, as they bring empty grain train CSX V376 (Athens, GA-Martinsville, IL) Northbound on the CSX W&A Subdivision at Cartersville, GA.

New CM44AH heads north through Brewton Saturday night with train 520 in tow... This CM44 is only a few weeks if that from Delivery. At 10:30pm you've got Brewton all to yourself as a prop for a northbound as you can see here. Three Youngnou YN560IV flashes lit the scene. Two 50-60 feet apart on either side of the left building, and one head-on to my right even with me. On the car roof for elevation advantage.

CSXT intermodal train Q138 rounds the S-curve in Relay, MD with a GEvo on the head end and a CM44AH as mid train DPU.

This was my first doing this angle and I'll probably do it again.

The train would stop just a short distance down the tracks and work the yard before continuing its run South.

Two nice clean units CSXT 7019 and 7016 fresh from GE less then two weeks ago, brings a general freight train eastbound through Sidney on the Big Four Bridge.

CSXT West Springfield to Selkirk train M425 has dropped their train on Main 1 and have cut away and are heading light engine down into the west end of Track 3 to pick up their outbound Housatonic Railroad interchange.

This view looks east off the Second Street bridge at about MP QB149.9 on modern day CSXT's Berkshire Subdivision, the one time Boston and Albany Railroad mainline. Freshly rebuilt CM44AH 7577 sparkles in the low afternoon light while the last remaining building from the once massive former GE plastics plant looms in the background.

General Electric was once the dominant industry in town dating all the way back to 1903 when when it purchased the Stanley Electric Manufacturing Co., which had been established in Pittsfield in 1890. In addition to its plastics division, GE manufactured transformers in town and operated an aerospace division. At its peak during the 1940s, the GE plant employed 13,000 people - in a city of just about 50,000!

The transformer division shut down by 1987 and took 2000 jobs with it, followed by the sale of aerospace to Lockheed Martin leaving only about 500 employees working for the plastics division. That last operation was closed and the remains sold off in 2005 and since that time many of the buildings on the 324 acre site have been removed, and for the past two decades GE has been working to clean and remediate the area from decades of PCB contamination.

In addition to being a major employer it was once a huge rail customer though today what little trackage remains on the property is rusty and unused and there is so little rail served industry left that CSXT has long since abolished their last local freight crew in town.

CSX CM44AH 7100 hustles drag freight M500 north past the historic South Side Drug Company in downtown Springfield. CSXT 7100 was rebuilt from CSX AC44CW 39 and entered revenue service earlier this year. M500 originated at CSX's Radnor Yard in Nashville, Tennessee and is bound for the company's former Baltimore & Ohio Barr Yard in the Chicago suburb of Riverdale, Illinois.

South Side Drug Company is one of the oldest pharmacies in Robertson County, being established in 1919. The Louisville & Nashville's Springfield passenger depot stood roughly where the parking area is to the right of the train. The building was razed sometime in the 1970's.

CSX is also freshening up some of their older GE's by creating CM44AH's out of the current class of AC4400CW's (CSX 200-375). 7205 was the former CSX 230 and was on the point of Q687 parked at Black Lane in Collinsville, IL on the CSX STL Line. A set of UP power was rolling down Main 1 with Q206 (Avon to Rose Lake/UP). Q206 would eventually become ACXNP and continue west on the UP while Q687 turns onto the A&S and terminates at Gateway Yard.

06:45, Saturday, December 31st, 2022. Wake up to the phone alarm. Check Messenger. Nothing. Shower. Check Messenger. Voice message at 07:09 from Gary L.: “…We have a nice treat on 101 this morning, it’s all EMD six-axle power. By me in West Palm Beach at seven ‘o eight AM…” Verify the power via VRF Cocoa live cam. It’s two SD40-2s. Get dressed. Pack up equipment. Bail out the back door and drive up to Dania Beach.

This really wasn’t the headsup I was expecting to receive on New Year’s Eve; I was anticipating a report on CSX M45330 and it’s CM44AH leader, but alas, a rarity on the Florida East Coast Railway takes priority once again. In another odd move by Bowden Yard, FEC 101-31 would have two of the railroads SD40-2’s act as power for one of last southbound freights to traverse the mainline in 2022. Word within inner circles state that the reason behind this decision was because of a lack of LNG sets in Bowden. #FEC715 leads the train, the unit being one of three former Union Pacific “Snoot Nose” SD40-2’s, a nickname derived from the locomotives’ extended noses. Photographed at the MP 347 curve, commonly referred to as the “Dania Curve” by local buffs, 101-31 had completed setting out one multi-platform IM car at Port Everglades a few minutes prior, now roaring south to Hialeah Yard with 101 cars and the two EMDs howling in run 8. Traffic for Hialeah Yard was compromised of empty rock and cement tubs, manifest, one autorack, and two IM cars.

There’s too many people I’d like to tag so I’ll keep it brief: thank you to everyone who made 2022 great to me!

After waiting for VIA 67 to make its station stop on the south track and then cross over to the north track once it departed, CN 327 is on the move with rebuild CSXT 7208 leading (ex-CSXT 227), CSXT 903 trailing and only 49 cars.

N013, having surprised me at Cartersville, has dropped to moderate 20-25 mph as the loaded coal drag brings 100 coal buckets out of the river valley and into down town Cartersville. The top of this hill is right here along the crossing of Gaston Westbrook Ave at the 43.0 milepost. The rebuilt AC44 leader was a nice treat as I haven't been able to catch one of these in while.

This train, if my notes are correct, is heading for the Seminole Electric plant near Bostwick, Florida. I may have the wrong but it is a Florida bound train.

After running around its train at Demler, N787 heads east with CM44AH rebuild #7200 now on the point.

Just recently moved from ATL to KC so I figured I wouldn't see an unit from one of the East Coast class 1s (CSX in particular) for a couple of weeks. 2 days later, a BNSF grainer is led by a CSX rebuild CM44AH.

CSX E040 slowly rolls into Decatur with a solo ES44AH leading and a CM44AH pushing the empty coal train on the rear.

TELE VIEW: While in pursuit of CSX's New York Central ES44AH-1853 on E/B I-032, I arrived at the Holly Tree Park in East Aikin to find W/B I-031 slowly crawling by. 1853 and train had been stopped just short of Jackson Station Road awaiting I-031's passage. ES44AH-3241 and fresh out of the showroom CM44AH-7590 are on the point with a healthy cut of Tropicana OJ cars on the head end.

Due to the Howard St. tunnel project, coal trains have had to take a long detour to get to export in Baltimore. In this case, loaded coal train C733 from Newell, PA heads down the Trenton Line past the old station at Belle Meade led by CM44AHs 7244 and 7380.
