Près du côté sombre de ce monde rude et glacé;
Près de l’immense rivière de glace (glacier) qui glisse vers moi et menace de m’emporter;

CLOSE TO THE EDGE
I built a small refuge up in the mountains
Close to the edge of the dark side of this rough and icy world;
Close to the edge of the huge river of ice (glacier) that glides towards me and threatens to take me away;
Close to the edge of this thin line between this majestic world and that of the unknown and the mystery.
And I painted it in red so that the rare birds
who ventured into these frigid lands came to visit me between two flapping wings.
You could say that living so close to the limits is a dangerous business ...
Sometimes this is true. But the most ominous hazard to our lives is not the challenges of the human adventure in all its forms.
It resides, on the contrary, in the comfort of indifference, in this position which consists of not being.

#two
The strangest worlds reveal themselves when we look at things through a macro lens. Things get even stranger when we use extension tubes and a close-up lens on top. For the "Two" theme I thought I'd take another look at the old motherboard that I'd once got for free at a computer shop. Macros of a motherboard's front side often look like modern cities with skyscrapers and an endless maze of roads, but what I find even more interesting is a motherboard's backside with all those spiky (soldering) pins. These "twin pins" that I've found Close To The Edge of the motherboard's backside reminded me of a strange mountain form, Twin Peaks with extremely steep slopes that one might find on an alien planet.
The image is a focus stacking made of 15 photos which I've combined in Helicon Focus (B, Radius 1, Smoothing 2). Lightsources were: soft LED light from above, two Swedish LED lamps (one shone through a green bottle from the left, the other, equipped with the yellow plastic bottle cap, from the right), and an LED flashlight from above which I'd stuck into my trusty blue tealight holder (handheld).
Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, have a nice week ahead, and stay safe!

Ever since I saw a picture of Hodge Close quarry in a Bob Allan walking guide 30 years ago I've always wanted to visit this place. It’s an awesome hole, the cliffs alone are 50 metres high, with the depth of the pond some 30 meters. It was mined for over 200 years until 1960 for is good quality green slate. According to a 2012 divers map there is 2 transit vans and 2 car wrecks at the bottom. There was also a few car wreckages plus a fridge littered around the shore. Seeing no added value in the scrape I Photoshopped it out. I wish I could also airbrush the morons that dumped it. So a rainy afternoon in March I set out to look for this quarry. Trying get a photo which showed the scale of the quarry involved an airy stomach churning close to the edge position with the tripod.

Why not start out trip with a bang?! I’ve always wanted to see Victoria Falls in person and had the opportunity to spend two days around this incredible area. Our most memorable experience was had on the Zambian side of the falls. Like many Americans, I’ve had the chance to see Niagra Falls, but Victoria Falls is a special experience being that you can swim to a special neutral zone of current on the edge of the falls. The Devil’s Pool is a small area next to the edge that has a naturally occurring rock wall. It allows you sit smack dab on the edge of the falls with thousands of gallons of water rushing past you. I will never forget as some of our guides did backflips into the Devil’s pool like it was no big deal. A truly special place.

The adventurous side of me kicks in. In my previous photo(s), I mentioned that I was escorted out of this location. Perhaps you can understand why. Though the water level was higher than normal, it was not as high as my other visits to Great Falls. That large outcropping right in front of me, I remember not being able to see that at all on my visit here 2 years ago!
Anyhow, I took several shots (sans boot) from this spot, and wanted to show how close the rapids were.
