A vertiginous climb up to a small cave. Just when I was feeling proud having made it--with dust on all appendages and a scraped knee--three Mennonite ladies in unscathed long dresses arrived! I would have loved to have photographed them but I don't think they would have relished the attention.

Several reports have indicated that Amtrak is planning to add another sleeper and another coach to the Zephyr for Spring and Summer of 2025. While the westbound Zephyr has had a handful of runs with eight Superliners in the past few weeks, at the moment, it is still typically only running with seven. It is seen here, climbing the north edge of Big Ten Curve.

Having climbed around three thousand feet Mark, Mike and Craig are seen gaining height across the lower snowfields above Lower Rumble Creek Lake. Beyond this point the gradient would steepen somewhat until we reached the almost glacial surroundings of Upper Rumble Creek Lake. In all there would be around another two thousand feet of ascent from here. The range in the background are the Mission Mountains which were our initial target on this trip, however as is often the case at that time of year they were closed due to Grizzly Bear activity. Needless to say we heeded the warnings.
Early June in Montana really is a fine time of the year, sunshine dominates, there is generally a good residue of snow in the mountains and the air is clear.
BNSF Z-WSPLAC7-13L has slowed down to a crawl as it battles the uphill climb westward through Siberia, CA. In the middle of the consist is a pair of GECX Tier 4 demonstrator units.
I'm working with the remaining crust from a loaf of bread that I baked yesterday. I like how it looks like a rocky mountain. Making quick work, I put a composition together. It's a bit simplistic but I prefer the less is more approach. Using the same figures is challenging but limitations are good for creativity.

What I see is a visual representation of growing up. We started out without reason climbing trees for fun. Now we find ourselves on our path at university, climbing walls.
I was helping out on an eagle project for one of my nephews when I came across this odd catapillar climbing on a water cooler. Very odd fellow this one. =D

"When the Mexican American War began General John S Williams took command. At the battle of Cerro Gordo (Mexico) he led the troops in a victory over Mexican troops. He took the nickname of "Cerro Gordo" Williams. After the battle, he returned to Illinois and settled in Bement. About the same time (1855) the people of the town of Griswold chose to move the town from the stagecoach line along the river to the path of the Great Western Railroad. The town was platted by Sheridan Wait and Henry Durfee. "Cerro Gordo" Williams was one of the citizens, as they had other citizens that fought in the battle of Cerro Gordo, they selected the name Cerro Gordo."
Hmmm, I always wondered.
Me at the summit of Carn an t-Sagairt Mor (yes I drag my camera equipment, including tripod, up there!).. Behind me can be seen the summit of Cairn Bannoch, which I'm aiming for to get my second (and last) Munro of the day. Beyond that is Broad Cairn, but i've done that on an earlier expedition, so no need for it today!
Carn an t-Sagairt Mor (pronounced Carn an Tackersht Vole - or something close) is at a height of 1037 meters (3402 feet) and Cairn Bannoch stands at 1012 meters (3320 feet), so an easy days climbing .. yeah, right!!

The venerable Mallet loco wheezes its way upgrade between Embatkala and Arbaroba, heading for Asmara. The narrow gauge railway ran from Massawa on the Red Sea and climbed steadily to the capital Asmara in Eritrea.
Sadly, the lower sections nearer the coast suffered from numerous washouts, and the future of this delightful scenic line is in serious doubt.
