In terms of conservation, threats to red kites have been via direct poisoning and indirect poisoning from pesticides resulting in almost extinction in the 1900's.. Woodland clearance and other changes in agricultural practices created a reduction in food resources. Other threats included electrocution, hunting and trapping and egg-collection. This persecution resulted in a rapidly declining population with extinction happening in Ireland. In 2006, the first Red Kite was seen in London after 150 years and they are now protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Whilst numbers have increased, they remain on the amber list.

The light was still low when two Mottled Ducks made a landing near me in still morning water. My friend and guide, Ron Bielefeld, taught me a bit about Mottled Ducks, one of his study subjects as a wildlife biologist. Mottled in Florida often mate with Mallards and produce hybrids. The more they mate, the more a Mottled looks like a Mallard. However, the trend reverses when they hybrid then mates with a Mottled. Interesting how this works. Females have orange speckled bills and males a brighter yellow with one black spot near the base. For you photographers out there, a good tell that they are talking to the control tower for takeoff clearance is when they bob their heads up and down a bit. (Anas fulvigula)

A forgotten settlement in Glen Garry. It's one of the poorer settlements that began 'emptying' at the time of the Highland Clearances when sheep were progressively turned out into the landscape, people leaving for distant shores as their crofts became unviable

Day 4 of 7 of the black and white food photo challenge. I found this huge mortar and pestle on clearance at Costco earlier this year. I have to admit I haven't used it much but am ready to start spicing things up. Anyone have one? What do you use it for mostly?
MISSION HARBOUR AUTHORITY - 33428 Harbour Ave Mission BC
The iconic Mission Heritage Railway Bridge c. 1909, is a Canadian Pacific Railway bridge, spanning the fast paced Fraser River between Mission and Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada
Autumn Sundown
Mission Railway Bridge:
Replacing an earlier bridge built in 1891, which was the first and only bridge crossing of the Fraser below Siska in the Fraser Canyon until the construction of the New Westminster rail bridge in 1904, it was constructed in 1909 by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). The Mission Railway Bridge is supported by 13 concrete piers and is approximately 533 metres in length. Before completion of the Mission highway bridge, highway traffic to and from Matsqui and Abbotsford with Mission used the bridge as a one-way alternating route, with traffic lights at either end to control direction. Rail traffic often held up car crossings, causing long and often very lengthy waits, which were a part of daily life in the Central Valley until the new bridge was completed.
Beneath the bridge's north abutment is an important river-level gauge monitored during the annual Fraser freshet. The bridge is also the location of the end of the Fraser's tidal bore - downstream from the bridge the river is increasingly influenced by tidal influences from the Georgia Strait.
Swing span
The Mission Railway Bridge has a swing span which has a vertical clearance of 4.9 metres above the water when closed. The swing span is fitted atop a circular concrete pier, the 10th from the north bank of the river. The 10th pier is protected from shipping traffic by two 46 metre wood piers extending upstream and downstream respectively perpendicular to the bridge which are tapered at both ends. The navigation channel past the bridge is 30 metres in width. At night a fixed white light is displayed on piers 9 and 11 as well as at the up-river and down-river ends of the protection pier.
The majority of marine traffic consists of log tows and gravel barges, which are permitted to use the navigation channel beneath the fixed span between piers 5 and 6. The swing span is used for wood chip barges and other vessels which cannot navigate beneath the span between piers 5 and 6.
CPR maintains a bridge tender 24 hours per day at an office on the north bank of the bridge. Vessels requesting passage through the swing span contact the bridge tender on marine VHF radio, whereby the tender walks the bridge to a control booth situated on the swing span. Wikipedia

The Gimsøystraumen Bridge is made of concrete and 839 metres (2,753 ft) long, the main span is 148 metres (486 ft), and the maximum clearance to the sea is 30 metres (98 ft). The bridge has 9 spans. Gimsøystraumen Bridge was opened in 1980. It is one of many bridges that connect the islands of Lofoten to each other as part of the European route E10 highway (also known as Lofast). (Wikipedia)

I feel myself dying in you, overtaken by expanding
spaces, which feed on me just like hungry butterflies.
I close my eyes and I’m laid out in your memory, barely alive,
with my mouth wide open and the river of oblivion rising.
And you, patiently, with needle-nosed pliers, pul out
my teeth, my eyelashes, you strip
the clover from my voice, the shade from my desire,
you open up windows of space in my name
and blue holes in my chest
through which the summers rush out in mourning.
Transparent, sharpened, interwoven with air
I float in a drowse, and still
I say your name and wake you, anguished.
But you force yourself to forget me,
and I’m barely a bubble
reflecting you, which you’ll burst
with the blink of an eye.

~A lone warrior limps through the portal, the burden of pain and desperation weighing heavily on her shoulders, each weary step a testament to the horrors they have had to face. Her red-rimmed eyes scan the area around TheGate, searching for others like her, the unlucky few, who made it through the terror and destruction... there were none to be found... and none to be crowned as the victor in this eternal conflict... there are no winners in war!~

The Highland Clearances was the forced displacement of a significant number of people in the Scottish Highlands during the 18th and 19th centuries, as a result of an agricultural revolution that resulted in enclosures, largely carried out by hereditary aristocratic landowners. A Highland Clearance has been defined as “an enforced simultaneous eviction of all families living in a given area such as an entire glen”.
The clearances are particularly notorious as a result of the brutality of many evictions at short notice (year-by-year tenants had almost no protection under Scots law), and the abruptness of the change from the traditional clan system in which reciprocal obligations between the population and their leaders were well-recognized. The cumulative effect of the Clearances devastated the cultural landscape of Scotland in a way that did not happen in other areas of Britain; the effect of the Clearances was to destroy much of the Gaelic culture.
The Clearances resulted in significant emigration of Highlanders to the sea coast, the Scottish Lowlands and further afield to North America and Australasia, where today are found considerably more descendants of Highlanders than in Scotland itself.
The Clearances were a complex series of events occurring over a period of more than a hundred years

Toledo Edison's Acme Generating Station, Toledo, Ohio. September, 1968,
The railway had an unusual "side trolley" arrangement (wire offset completely to one side) to provide clearance for loading hopper cars. Most of the locomotives also had the "extension cord" on a reel on the hood as seen here. This was used for movements into the interchange yard which had no overhead wire.
The last portion of the facility was demolished in 2013. The electric locomotives have been preserved by several museums / individuals.

From here I could see some scattered stones from what would have been dwelling places in days gone by. We know some were cleared from the parts in the time of The Clearances. Now there is an emptiness and a quietness.
